Chapter 118: Chapter 5: Employee Guidelines

The sun slowly rose over the horizon—another new day had begun.

In the employee dormitory within the Uchiha clan compound, the alarm clock buzzed, waking Kakashi from his sleep. He opened his drowsy eyes, his face still bearing the traces of lingering fatigue.

He pulled on his dark blue vest and stepped outside to begin his day. This routine had long since become ingrained.

The employee cafeteria was located in the southeastern corner of the Uchiha compound. At the entrance stood a signboard that read Cafeteria Rules. Kakashi glanced over it carefully, noting that nothing had changed or been added. Only then did he enter and order a simple breakfast.

While eating, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a copy of the Employee Guidelines that all workers within the Uchiha compound were required to follow—

[We are the last line of defense. Please remember the following rules and prevent the spread of contamination.]

① Always wear your mask while on duty. Do not remove it under any circumstances.

② If someone asks, "The Uchiha compound is supposed to be closed to outsiders, so how did I get in?" do not respond. Remain silent until they leave.

③ Minimize contact with crows as much as possible.

④ Leaving the Uchiha compound is strictly prohibited. If a "visitor" attempts to leave, you must stop and restrain them.

⑤ Under no circumstances may employees leave the Uchiha compound.

Kakashi had already memorized the contents of the guidelines by heart, yet he still made a habit of reading them each day. After all, memory could be tampered with by unknown influences.

When the "Broadcast" first appeared on the Hokage Rock, people initially assumed it was a form of enemy attack—an illusion or genjutsu perhaps. By the time they realized something was truly wrong and began taking the "rules" seriously, it was already far too late.

The Broadcast spread rapidly throughout Konoha. Sarutobi Hiruzen ordered an immediate evacuation of the villagers and a full-scale relocation. Better to be embarrassed than completely wiped out.

Unfortunately, evacuation took time—and the horror didn't wait. In the blink of an eye, the entire Hidden Leaf became a nightmarish scenario from one of the rule-bound tales. Once you entered, you couldn't leave. To this day, no shinobi has found the correct path to escape.

Anyone passing by the outskirts of Konoha becomes inexplicably drawn in—transformed into so-called "visitors."

The rules themselves are riddled with traps. "Visitors" slowly lose their sense of self and fall into cognitive dissonance.

The Leaf shinobi, clinging to rules that seem "correct," can do little more than survive moment to moment—staggering slowly toward despair.

Once, Kakashi had been a normal Konoha ninja. But perhaps because he had transplanted a Sharingan, he was soon tainted by the "Uchiha contamination." He abandoned his green vest, put on the dark blue one, and joined the Uchiha compound as an employee.

To this day, the true nature of the Broadcast remains a mystery to Konoha. No one can fully perceive or comprehend it. It feels more like a game created by some omnipotent being to pass the time—and Konoha's ninja were simply the unlucky chosen.

Some suspected the Uchiha might be behind it.

Yes, one such person was Shimura Danzō.

After all, many of the rules were clearly related to the Uchiha.

...

A soft glow shimmered across an open field as Tsunade and Shizune suddenly appeared.

Dozens of eyes immediately turned to stare at them.

"Newcomers..." someone muttered through clenched teeth.

"Where are we?" Shizune asked warily. The group before them didn't look particularly friendly.

"Kirikagure," someone replied.

Shizune's eyes widened in shock. Kiri? How had they ended up in the Hidden Mist Village?

"Let us warmly welcome our newest participants!" boomed a loud, theatrical voice. At the same time, the air filled with the sound of drums, gongs, and bursting fireworks, while flower petals rained down from the sky.

"Welcome to the Blood Mist Amusement Park!"

A deep sense of dread surged in Shizune's chest.

"Now it's time to introduce the rules of the game! Everyone, listen carefully!" the loud voice continued.

Tsunade stood frozen in place, her expression grave.

"There are many exciting games in the Blood Mist Amusement Park! Clear them successfully, and you'll receive plenty of glowing reviews!"

Tsunade tilted her head, straining to catch more.

But that was it?

That was their entire rule explanation?

Tsunade's eyes welled up with tears as she put on a terrified expression.

"Aaaah, I'm so scared... Someone help me! What are we supposed to do here? Could some kind big brother explain it to me?"

She had transformed herself into a twin-tailed little girl using the Transformation Jutsu—an identity that suited her current act. After all, they'd been on the run from debt collectors at the casino before all this happened.

Unfortunately, no one responded. Someone even sneered, "Useless little girl. You'll only drag us down."

Tsunade covered her mouth as fat tears rolled down her cheeks. But still, no one paid her any attention. The shinobi world didn't overflow with white knights swooning over a pretty face. Most ninja were immune to superficial charm.

"Tsunade-sama, your beauty tactic didn't work," Shizune said awkwardly. "Should we just beat someone up and force them to talk?"

Tsunade shook her head.

"Keep a low profile." Anyone capable of abducting them without leaving a trace had to be a powerhouse. No matter how angry she was, she couldn't afford to act rashly.

Hiruzen had tried to summon her back, but Tsunade had completely ignored him. Jiraiya had even come in person—only to get punched and sent flying. After that, the matter was dropped.

Soon afterward, Tsunade and Shizune were captured and brought here.

The enemy lurked in the shadows while they were in the light. The situation was bleak. They didn't even know the enemy's objective. Everything about this place was shrouded in mystery.

Next, the group was teleported to a game facility with a giant banner: Whack-a-Mole.

A common game for children.

A little girl in the crowd gasped.

"This game looks super easy!"

"Easy? Then why don't you give it a try?" said a middle-aged male ninja with a cheerful smile. Since the girl had volunteered herself, she had no room to back out—especially with so many eyes watching.

Shizune seized the chance to ask, "Aren't the rest of us supposed to join the challenge too?"

A half-grown boy with face paint quickly explained,

"No. Everyone present is considered part of a single group. Only one person needs to participate in the game. Win or lose, the others can still move forward in the Blood Mist Amusement Park. Otherwise, we're all stuck here."

As soon as he finished speaking, everyone turned hostile gazes on him. These rules had been learned at the cost of many lives. Why reveal them to newcomers? Wouldn't it be better to let them go in blind as cannon fodder?

The boy shrank back, falling silent.

Tsunade and Shizune exchanged a glance, then quietly approached the boy. A young, naïve boy like him would be easier to manipulate—possibly a way to extract information.

Clearly, they weren't the only ones with this idea. Within moments, the boy was surrounded by a group of "newbies."

He gave a goofy grin and eagerly spilled everything he knew, directing most of his words at Tsunade. It seemed he had recognized who she was.

He introduced himself as Kankurō, from Sunagakure...
