Chapter 113 : Rush into the night Part 2

"Over there!" Sam pointed towards what seemed a random direction. Even though no one but him was able to see in the dark, they trusted him and followed as stealthily as they could. The perils of the lost city were no joke even during daytime, but at night all sorts of cryptids crowded the streets and even veteran hunters were reluctant on performing night incursions.

By the time the group reached the location Sam had pointed out, it was already too late. There was what seemed to be a body on the floor and a person laying on top of it as if mourning the passing of a close friend.

Uriel directed the light of his lantern towards the person and tried to communicate with him, but the man ignored his attempt and kept bobbing up and down like he was sobbing.

"Are you ok? Are you hurt somewhere?" Medusa asked, but she also didn't receive an answer.

The man kept silently mourning the passing of his friend and the party took the chance to look around and find potential threats. They were at what used to be an intersection, there was an old burnt car without doors or windows, a couple of broken street lamps in the ground and all the buildings in the corners were damaged.

The place looked as if it was bombed at some point in time, but it must have been years ago, probably when the city fell.

Uriel leaned closer to the man, thinking that maybe he was deaf or something of the sorts. Something must have been wrong with him, because a person wouldn't call for help and then ignore people if they showed up, but when he tried to tap on the man's shoulder he finally reacted by turning around and standing up slowly.

He was skinny, his complexion was sickly pale as a sheet of paper, he had deep eyes and black hair, but what stood out the most about him was the blood dripping from his mouth.

"He seems to be hurt, can you check up on him, Luna?" Uriel asked.

"Kill it! Kill it now! Kill it!!!" Luna cried in horror. She was completely out of control and started shrieking so loudly every cryptid on a three block radius could hear her.

After standing up, the first thing the man did was try to bite Uriel, but he was able to counter with a low kick out of instinct and the strange man's leg broke like a twig.

Uriel took a step back and pulled out his revolver, now that Luna had made a fuss there was no point in trying to be stealthy anymore as cryptids could come running any minute now, but he had no opportunity to fire as Medusa swiftly kneed the man on the chest.

Even if it was just a normal person, he attempted to attack Uriel and that was enough for Medusa to consider him an enemy. For a second it seemed the fight had come to an end, but the creature's chest reformed itself and the broken leg snapped back to its place like nothing happened.

"It's not dying! How do we kill this thing!?" Uriel shouted.

This time Sam didn't want to remain idle and attempted to pick up a broken lamp post, but it was too rusty to be wielded as a weapon and it crumbled on its own. Uriel did his best to dodge the continuous onslaught the bloodied person unleashed upon him, but it was difficult as it moved in unnatural ways that barely resembled the movements of a person.

Even if it looked like a human being, it attacked with such ferocity its bones would constantly break but that only made things more difficult because, even if Uriel managed to block an attack, the creature's arm would break and hit him anyway. Its hits carried a lot of strength. It was like being hit over and over by a whip with sharp claws at the tip.

Uriel's face was getting disfigured by the many shallow scratches while Medusa did her best to take down the creature but, as frail as it was, killing it was impossible.

Usually, Luna would have been thrilled at the sight of a new cryptid and she would have butted in with a theory on how to defeat such a creature, but she was paralyzed. All she did was cower behind the destroyed car and watch the scene unfold in front of her eyes with a terrified expression none of her companions thought possible.

Sam finally stepped in with a steel pipe he found laying in the street thanks to his all seeing trait and he impaled the cryptid on the chest pinning it to the ground but despite the gruesome wound, the creature kept waving its arms ferociously.

"What should we do?" He asked amidst panting.

"I don't know. What got into Luna? We need her!" Uriel said, covering his face as he could already feel his wounds closing. It wasn't that he wanted to keep his regeneration a secret from his party, but he wanted to make sense of this strange ability before disclosing any information.

"I have an idea, but you need to keep it still." Medusa said.

Sam tightened the grip on the steel pipe and did his best to keep the cryptid out of reach while Medusa took a stance.

The young huntress lowered her center of gravity while she retracted her fists, she let out a sigh trying to clear her mind and then she spun in the air in a whirlwind kick that effectively decapitated the creature. The severed head rolled on the ground, but it still took a full minute until the body stopped moving.

Before they could even ask Luna for an explanation about her unusual behavior, the group heard a strange noise coming from a nearby building. It was footsteps, a lot of them. Just when Uriel was about to fire blindly in the dark, Sam stopped him and a group of about ten people came out. They all looked young, about their same age, but they had high tech weapons and medium or light armor.

They also looked tired, some of them were even wounded, and all of them were evidently scared of being in the open. But now that there weren't any cryptids around they were able to turn on their electric flashlights and pointed them towards Uriel's party temporarily blinding everyone but Sam.
