Chapter 462: The evil that men do Part 1
Thanks to her gut feeling telling her she was in danger, Bethany reacted quickly to the nurse's terrifying transformation and she pushed her to the side while her best friend remained in a daze trying to make sense of things. Bethany didn't stop there and rushed in to grab Jeff and get him out of there, though she did not expect to see what now lied in front of her eyes.
Jeff, or rater what was left of him, was scattered to pieces on top of a bloody hospital bed. The 'doctor' by his side was still busy cutting parts of what used to be Beth's friend when she stabbed him with the first sharp thing she found.
Beth used so much strength, the scalpel went all through the back of the man's neck leaving her hand trapped inside his body. It was a gruesome scene, made worse by the fact that Beth's victim didn't start to vanish like a cryptid should.
She knew cryptids were able to regenerate and piercing through them could potentially leave a hunter's hand trapped in the monster's flesh, but she was able to easily take her hand back which led to a horrifying revelation.
The thought of being trapped in a secluded part of the hospital with a cryptid, even considering that cryptids weren't supposed to appear inside city walls, was nothing compared to the fact that the man Beth just killed was a regular human. He did not regenerate nor did he vanish, he just fell limp to the ground leaving a splatter of blood that mixed together with Jeff's.
This time Beth couldn't contain her anguish anymore and she let out a scream, though it was nothing compared to the ear piercing shriek her best friend let out from outside the room. This managed to snap beth out of her childish reaction and she desperately scanned the room looking for an exit.
She tried breaking through the nearest wall thinking that all she needed to be safe again was to reach other people and let them know there was a loose cryptid in there, but the wall was made of heavy duty alloy and it was impossible for her to break it.
After bouncing off the wall like a rubber ball, Beth shook her head and tried banging on the next wall, only to find out it was made of the same material. She was trapped, just like a moth that unwittingly entered an apartment right before they closed the window.
"The window!" She let out a gasp as she composed herself and took impulse. She didn't know the exact floor she was in, but anything was better than facing the same fate as her friend. She gulped down her saliva as she readied herself to jump, which she did at the exact time the strange creature entered the examination room only to see the young huntress jump off.
Beth fell for what seemed to be an eternity, screaming to the top of her lungs the whole time until she finally hit the ground and her consciousness faded.
She didn't understand what was going on and acted out of sheer instinct. She didn't know why would they kill Jeff, why was there a cryptid inside the hospital or what was her best friend's fate. One thing she was certain of was that a swift dead was a thousand times better than what Jeff must have gone through and she made the right decision by jumping.
Little did Beth know, that the height she jumped from wasn't enough to kill a hunter and she woke up strapped to a wheelchair as she was being taken up the elevator.
"Poor girl, is she fine?" An old woman who was on her way to see her sick niece asked in a worried tone.
"She had a psychotic break and jumped off from the thirteenth floor, but she'll be fine. It looks bad, but hunters can recover from way worse than this." The nurse replied trying to seem concerned, though her voice came off annoyed.
Beth tried to wiggle out of the wheelchair, but she had been strapped with secure alloy bindings. She also tried to scream, but they also put a gag on her and she could do nothing but futilely struggle.
"Now dear, don't fight. We're going to make you better." The nurse said as she clung her long nails on the poor girl's shoulder and then added in a whisper. "You don't want me to eat that poor granny over there, do you?"
Beth's blue eyes widened bot in shock and pain, though the piercing wounds on her shoulder were nothing compared to all the broken bones in her body. under the threat of the poor woman's life, Bethany finally calmed herself down and limited herself to silently cry as she was taken back to the same examination room where she jumped from before.
"Loot at the mess you made! This is a hospital, it's supposed to be sterile," The nurse said in feigned frustration and then continued.
"guess I should clean this up before the next doctor comes." The creature's face distorted once again, only this time what caught beth's eyes was the long protruding tongue that twirled around the place cleaning up to the last drop of blood on the floor and the walls.
"Mhm! Mhhhm!" Beth screamed, though no words could escape her gag. Her distress seemed to please the cryptid, who didn't miss the chance to taste her blood passing her vile tongue all over Beth's face. Not content with that, it slipped its tongue inside the defenseless girl's clothes just because it could, but the cryptid was interrupted by a doctor walking in.
"Stop messing with her, that's not part of the process. What you're doing is unnecessary and cruel." The doctor said as he adjusted Beth's clothes. It was a small gesture of kindness that managed to somewhat calm her and gave her a glimmer of hope to hang on to.
"What do you care, you're the one who's going to kill her. Not even cryptids kill their own species and you call me cruel."
"I only do it because it's for the greater good, something a mindless creature like you won't be able to understand. Now go make yourself useful somewhere else." The man said coldly, to which the cryptid replied with the starving glare of a predator being denied food, but still obeyed and went out of the room.
The doctor then took out a case of medical equipment and washed his hands under the disbelieving gaze of Beth. His voice and attitude seemed kind and he was also able to drive away the monster, but she did't miss how the cryptid said his task was to kill her and he didn't deny it.
"I'd like to ask you a few questions and I'll remove your gag if you promise to behave, but if you scream the gag stays. Agreed?" The doctor asked and Beth replied with a short nod of her head, which was all she could do.
"Why are you doing this?" Beth asked as softly as she could, though she couldn't help but stutter and sob, but the man ignored her and proceeded to ask her questions.
"What's your rank and type? What's your blood type? When was the last time you had intercourse?" He fired seemingly unrelated questions one after the other and only seemed to react when Beth offered a precise answer. Otherwise he simply ignored her.
She begged, offered all kinds of things, but the man didn't respond to anything, or that was the case until she finally said something that struck a nerve.
"Are you even human!?"
"I... I am... but this is necessary. You don't understand how important is the sacrifice your making, but if you knew."
"I don't want to die, I really don't want to die. I'm still young! please! I didn't even graduate from highschool, I never had a boyfriend," Beth made a short pause to gather her breath and couldn't help but think of her recently deceased partner, Jeff, who she had a huge crush on. "Please, just... just let me go, I won't tell anyone I swear."
"There's nothing I can do, but if it makes you feel better, you're helping save the city. Something far more terrible than anything you've ever seen is on its way here and the only way we can fight it is if humans and cryptids work together to stop it."
"Humans and cryptids! That's insane! Let me go, let me go..." Beth repeated over and over, but her words fell on deaf ears. It didn't matter how many tears she shed or the tone she used to beg for her life, nothing seemed to have any effect on the man.
The doctor stood up from his chair and closed the door, then put on his gloves and a mask, then grabbed the scalpel. What was in front of her wasn't a human anymore, she wasn't even a patient on his eyes, she was nothing but an organ donor. Still, he had the last courtesy towards her and apologized.
"I'm sorry for doing this without anesthesia, but some cryptids have adverse reactions to it. I hope you understand..."
