Chapter 798: Two and a half giants Part 1

The moment the giants stood up it became clear to Alonso he wouldn't be able to get in close combat anymore. Especially after taking into consideration how they swatted him like a fly when he attempted to kill one of them in their sleep. But that didn't mean all hope was lost yet.

"I just need to hold them off long enough for my men to escape." Coughed Alonso as he reloaded his sniper rifle. The powerful long tipped rounds were design for hunting cryptids and unlike most firearms, they didn't need gunpowder but just a hint of orichalcum to channel enough flux energy for the trigger mechanism to activate. The rifle itself was an advanced weapon modeled after a Barret precision rifle with enhancements that could have killed a heavenly rank hunter with a single headshot, yet against the hulking anthropomorphic creatures its rounds were akin to a mosquito bite.

Uriel's revolver did cause more damage since he was able to channel a sizeable amount of flux into each bullet, but due to the size of the wounds it took the giants no time to regenerate themselves completely. This didn't come as a surprise to Uriel who already knew his Magnum, as powerful as it was, was no match for horror level cryptids and that was fine for him. His goal was the same as Alonso's, to poke at the giants until they shifted their attention from the Tercio towards them.

"It's not working." Uriel clicked his mouth as he ran behind a giant while trying to avoid the debris that came off after each of the cryptid's steps. At the speed Uriel ran even a simple rock could become dangerous shrapnel, but that wasn't enough to deter the frantic chase.

"If only we could get them separated, that is all we need to defeat them." Alonso said, now mounted in his brave steed that feared no cryptid.

Uriel had no clue as to what Alonso had in mind, but every passing second the giants drew nearer to the city where not only the Spanish Tercio remained but also his friends making it clear it was time to make a decision.

"Go back to your men..."

"I already said..." Alonso cut Uriel short, but he continued speaking over him.

"And do whatever it is you said you can do to defeat them. I'll take the two big ones to the side." Uriel said and seemingly disappeared from Alonso's line of sight.

What actually happened was that Uriel activated Dash and hurled the Red thread of fate like a grappling hook towards the tallest of the giants. It's reddish skin tone made it difficult to see where the dagger had landed, but the refreshing flux energy he received informed him he had landed a clean hit.

He then climbed the giant and anchored himself to the cryptid's back, giving him a vantage point that allowed him to fire at the second tallest giant that was of a pale lime color.

"It's just like Charlie said, shooting at a cryptid's eye is usually the way to go." Uriel blurted out as the lime colored giant winced in pain for a moment, then scout its surroundings to find the offender.

Upon noticing Uriel on the back of the reddish giant, the lime giant ran full tilt towards him and slapped the mostly uncovered back of its companion causing a sonic boom that reminded Uriel of the time Mister Scofield fought against Jon. Luckily, albeit fast, the giant was no match for Uriel's Dash skill and he was able to dodge it in a split second.

Not just that, he also wrapped the invisible wire around the slapping hand and let himself be carried away right in time to witness the reddish giant turning around in anger. With nothing else but the seething pain in its back, the reddish giant had no means to know Uriel was the cause of what just happened and blamed the lime colored giant instead.

A single punch from the tallest giant was enough to demolish the lesser one's face revealing a gruesome sight of its jaw bone and inner muscles, though it soon reformed back into the usual face not even a mother could love.

A fight of colossal proportions ensued after, all the while Uriel walked climbed them up and down weaving the flux wire of his dagger with the same care and patience a spider would weave its own web.

With each strike the giants caused a great deal of damage to the other, the pain of the wounds they sustained enough to hide the fact that their range of movement was becoming smaller and smaller as they pulled on the unbreakable thread until they became unable to move entirely as they were tightly knotted to each other. Though not even that was enough to get them to stop fighting each other with their fingers, pushing and pulling, and even biting.

Uriel heaved a relieved sigh after disabling those two giants, though he was aware there was nothing in his arsenal that could possibly defeat enemies of that size. The memory of Amy beating on the giant mud crab they encountered briefly crossed his mind, but that situation differed too much from Uriel's current conundrum. They were just novices playing hunter against a beast level cryptid, but Uriel was now facing the real deal.

Cryptids so powerful they shrugged off steel like it was nothing and even the orichalcum dagger barely managed to pierce their skin.

"If only that witch hadn't taken the spear with her." Uriel bit his thumb in frustration, but he then shook his sour mood off since at least he was rapidly recovering whatever flux he had spent and that gave him the idea.

He grabbed Nika's figurine from his trait and threw it on the ground, startling the sunkissed huntress who just a second ago was talking casually with Luna at a far distance.

"What the..."

"I'll let you use as much flux as you want, go nuts." Uriel said, his words provoking the widest grin Nika could muster. She then blinked out of sight ready to summon her black armor and use it against the giant that by then was having a blast crushing whichever hunter it encountered on its rampage.

Nika's absence was short, but it was enough for many of the Spanish hunters to dye a gruesome death under the feet of the smallest giant. It wasn't as tall or powerful as its companions, but it was certainly much faster and incredibly more devious.

Contrary to the foolish giants Uriel managed to trick into getting tangled, the remaining giant showed signs of a superior intelligence which accompanied with his malice made escaping from its feeding frenzy impossible.

"It feeds by crushing people to death." Luna asserted.

"Can't say I disagree, but how is that helpful?" The female doctor who had remained next to Luna the entire time scoffed. She excused it as her 'protecting' the innocent child, though in reality she felt much safer near the jaguar cryptid that acted as Luna's guardian. When it first arrived, the jaguar emitted an eerie blue glow, but for some odd reason its flames had now erupted into a wildfire that resembled a full mane around its head.

"It's not, but It might give us insight on how to defeat it." Luna muttered.

Meanwhile, Alonso had already arrived thanks to his faithful steed, though that didn't stop the Tercio from running in panic without any sense of direction. It could be argued that they acted like idiots instead of the professional hunters they were supposed to be, but Alonso knew wits had little to do with their behavior as he realized they were being tricked by the illusory ability of the smallest giant that turned out to be the one responsible for the windmill mirage.

"Fear not, my men, gather yourselves and regroup. We need our formation to defeat this incarnation of evil!" Alonso shouted, though the hunters still panicked around following what they saw as the exit not knowing they were being tricked into running in circles.

Cries of pain and despair filled the streets up to the point where Alonso couldn't muster his voice anymore and he watched in stunned horror as his men were slaughtered left and right by the giant. But that all changed when a seemingly ordinary evolved man with a trait so weak it barely manifested showed up.

Sancho's right arm trembled and he was barely able to keep the pike up in the air, his knees faltered and his body shivered uncontrollably as though he was freezing, yet he was the only one to stand besides his boss in order to face the cryptid.

As a pikeman, his duty was to go in the first line and despite being alone, he still marched forward when Alonso charged making the two of them the only possible defense against the rampant cryptid that laughed every time it crushed a man to death.
