Chapter 816: Gevaudan

Luna darted away without a care for the world heading directly towards the source of the howl than replied to her. She forgot the hunger, the thirst, the tiredness of the long and cumbersome trip she had endured, made even more extenuating due to her constantly trying to keep up to hunters that were one rank above her.

Her mind was completely blank and she only focused on her sense of smell, trying to catch the slightest hint of aroma that could lead her to another lycanthrope. Nothing could stand in the way of the most basic instincts of a lycanthrope, not even the thought of the friends she so casually left behind. Luna's rational mind was usually diminished whenever she transformed, but on this occasion it had completely disappeared.

Frothing at the mouth and running full speed, she eventually picked up the scent of the foreign creature in spites of the dust that dulled her senses, only instead of another lycanthrope she was met with something that shook the core of her being.

The creature had fur all over its body, black eyes that emitted an eerie green glimmer that didn't let out a hint of intelligence, though Luna's case wasn't much different as she had lost control of her actions.

But the extent of the differences went even further. The creature in front of Luna walked on all fours and looked nothing like a human. It was as though a wolf and a bear, or maybe a horse had been mixed together to produce a hellish offspring that looked fierce enough to instill fear even in the bravest hunter.

But at that moment Luna was no hunter, nor she was a prey, she was a slave to her instincts and as such she approached the foul beast with curiosity. If it was an ally, they would sniff each other and go on with their lives. If it was an enemy, instead, the only possible outcome was for one of the beasts to die.

The two wolfish creatures circled each other letting out low growls as they showed teeth and it didn't take long for Luna to realize she was at a disadvantage. Be it the length of the creature's teeth, the sharpness of its claws or even weight, Luna couldn't compare in any regard to the killing machine that had its eyes set on Luna as they kept on the circular dance of the wolves.

The first to make a move was the creature that Luna would have identified as a gevaudan's beast had her consciousness remained in charge, though its taxonomy would have made no difference in the outcome of the powerful bash that Luna attempted to stop eventually being forced to stand on her hind legs.

With the advantage of height, Luna clawed at the cryptid with her front paws but failed to target any weak spot. Her enemy's thick fur around the neck made it impossible for her to even draw blood, case contrary to the gevaudan that drew plenty with a single bite to Luna's belly.

The gevaudan retreated while violently shaking its head in an attempt to take off a chunk of meat, but despite their difference in size, Luna was too sturdy and heavy and was left with the teeth marks that bled profusely.

Luna whimpered in pain after releasing herself from the starved bite she just received, but she didn't linger on her suffering as the battle had just began. As if stoked by the pain, Luna's eyes lit up in anger and she bashed at the gevaudan instinctively lowering her center mass to take it down.

The gevaudan's limbs were longer and disproportionate to the creature's weight and it fell on the ground with a dry thump. Luna pressed her attach even further as she clawed at the beast's belly, but when she attempted to bite the gevaudan turned and grabbed her neck with its maws, preventing her from causing any more damage.

The fight raged on the ground as they wrestled with all their might. The gevaudan's advantage was size and power while Luna's advantage was mobility and the flexibility that allowed her to move on four or two legs with the same ease.

A cloud of dust was lifted amidst the sound of growling and whimpering, allowing the hunters that followed the beast to soon catch up to them, though they could not intervene even if they wanted to.

The two wolfish creatures were tangled in such a messy fight it was impossible for any of them to properly aim their weapons, not to mention they were also too weak to participate in any other way.

Uriel would have loved to jab the Red thread of fate in the bigger beast, but just the thought of activating Dash made his knees weak which got him to realize he wouldn't have the strength to fight against the draft caused by air whenever he used Dash.

The hunters watched helpless as red lines were painted all across their friend's body, sprinkled with puncture wounds that looked deep enough to reach her internal organs. Each whimper made Nika curse in Spanish and wish she could jump to help Luna, but Uriel pressed on her shoulder to keep her calm.

"It's Luna, she can handle this." He said with confidence once he noticed the gevaudan wasn't faring much better. For each wound it inflicted on Luna it received two in exchange. Granted, Luna was unable to jab her teeth or claws deep enough to cause any real damage, but the wounds were piling up at a rapid pace.

Anticipating the outcome of the fight was impossible, especially with such poor visibility. The only certain thing was that whoever meddled in between them would pay dearly for their mistake as even Luna seemed completely out of it.

At that moment, the gevaudan channeled its flux energy causing a dark aura to spread across the field limiting their visibility even further while at the same time empowering itself. Its fur became thicker and its muscles bulged, sending whatever hope the hunters had out the window.

Before anyone could intervene, the gevaudan bit on Luna's thigh to cripple her. It's nasty fangs sunk deep into her meaty flesh causing an excruciating pain that Luna could not endure. The beast pressed its maw even more causing the bone to crack under the immense pressure.

Luna cried as she attempted to release herself from the bite, only managing to hurt herself even further as the gevaudan's jagged teeth made minced meat out of Luna's leg.

It was a critical wound that would define the victor, but the same pain that paralyzed Luna was also the only thing that managed to snap her out of her beastly tantrum. Waking up in the middle of a fight, and a losing one at that, was less than an ideal scenario. Actually, the fight had already ended and the gevaudan feasted on Luna's leg.

Her eyes widened as she regained her sentience and she quickly assessed the situation and although the pain was unbearable, Luna knew what had to be done.

She slashed at her own leg cutting it off in a single motion thanks to her orichalcum claws. This sent the enemy beast back a couple meters as it remained pulling on the now severed limb, but Luna wasn't done.

She leapt forward using the one good leg she had, without showing any sign of pain even after the gruesome wound she received, and she poked at the cryptid's eyes with her orichalcum claws. The cryptid attempted to bite Luna, but it was useless as its prize was stuck inside its maw which allowed the orichalcum claws to pop the beast's eyes.

She then unleashed a barrage of swipes focusing only on the cryptid's face which impeded its regeneration and due to it's lack of arms, the beast had no choice but to retreat. Luna had taken that into account and she knew in her state it would have been impossible to catch up to it, which is why she latched onto the cryptid's neck with her maw while continuing her onslaught.

The cryptid roared, whimpered and cried as it retreated, unwittingly dragging Luna along with it until it was left with no strength to fight anymore and dropped helpless on the ground.

Unfortunately to Luna, the gevaudan dragged her far away from her friends and she was left alone with a cryptid that, albeit unconscious, could recover any minute. She kept on attacking despite her being tired already in a desperate attempt to kill the cryptid, but she eventually came to the conclusion that she wasn't dealing enough damage to finish the job which is why she decided to do the one thing she could do.

Whether it was a good or a bad idea and the possible consequences didn't matter to her. If it was the only choice, it was no choice at all and she would have to go through with it. Even if she didn't like the idea, even if it disgusted her, even if it changed the way her friends saw her...

Luna ate the gevaudan beast, from head to tail flux orb included.
