Chapter 818: Those who fell Part 1
Traveling all the way back from Easter island to America and Europe consumed a great deal of time for the Fallen corporation, but being the founder and CEO of the company Sam had the last word and he refused to take a shortcut.
Whether or not he was able to see something dangerous in the horizon or if he just wanted to take the scenic route would have remained a mystery, if not for him crying and panicking when the third in command suggested going through Asia and look for work there.
Even after managing to calm himself, Sam refused to provide an explanation as to why he wanted to Avoid Asia so much, though the crew assumed it had to be related to his trait which allowed him to see as far and wide as he so wished. This came as an incredible advantage as it allowed them to evade the most dangerous cryptids making their flight as safe as it could possibly be until they reached the old continent.
"Is this really Europe!?" Ika let out as she pressed her face against the window just to have a better view, uncaring of the distorted face she was making.
"It is technically Europe, but there's nothing much to see here." Sam replied, his eyes wandering aimlessly across the continent as he searched for anything and everything at the same time.
"Come on, just a little bit. I've always wanted to visit other countries." Ika pouted.
"It's not too different from anywhere else, I guess. Besides, they even speak your language. If you want to sight, you can wait until we go to France." Sam replied with a charming smile that had no effect on the cute woman.
"They speak Rapa Nui!?" Ika was left in a daze.
"No, you dumbshit. They speak Spanish, this is Spain." Grunted Wendy as she eyed a magazine with disinterest.
"There's no need to be so mean, I'm new to all this." Ika pouted some more.
"Don't worry about her. I didn't hire her for her lovely character." Sam sarcastically said.
Despite all hunters possessing a trait, sharing what they experienced while activating them was truly impossible. Many people had attempted to describe how they felt or what did their traits do, but even the simplest trait caused such a fundamental change to the core of a person's existence that words could not possibly convey it properly, but if Sam could he would have loved to share what he experienced at that particular time.
Flying wasn't something new to him as he first gained his ability to fly when he received the orichalcum earring from the Air spirit woman he then married and then when he set out on the path to become a holy rank hunter and earned himself his proto wings. Now, with the advantage of being in a steady ship he could truly focus on his trait making it the first time he was able to truly appreciate the old continent.
Where others saw a mass of earth that extended as far as the eye could see, Sam saw the land, the forest, the tree in that forest, the bird nested on that particular tree and even the colors of its feathers. Even more, by channeling a hint of flux energy he was able to go even further and see the mites in the feathers and the microbes on the mite.
At the same time, he was able to see the cities, the buildings, the roads and everything man made. His eyes were unaffected by the veil of distance and as marvelous as that sounded, the true wonder was the ability of his brain to process an insurmountable amount of information while casually speaking with his new companions.
Someone like Luna would have feel tempted to dissect Sam's brain if that allowed her to so much as graze the surface of the mysteries behind that ability, but at the same time, she would have probably done it just because she now hated Sam.
"I can't find them." Sam bit his thumb nail in frustration.
"Maybe if we land..." Ika left the suggestion open for someone to finish.
"Please, just... just let me focus, Okay?" Sam said in the most condescending manner, but Wendy joined in.
"I'm bored and hungry, if we don't land soon I'll go crazy. Besides, she's a complete idiot, but she's right."
"I don't like flying in this ship either, but my trait requires a certain height to counter the curvature of the earth."
"I know that, you fucking moron," Wendy's grunt made Sam shiver in fear which she seemingly enjoyed, but she continued nonetheless. "she's a complete idiot, but she's right. If they moved on foot across this country, there is a possibility that someone knows their whereabouts."
"Are you really going to let her speak to you like that? It's like you're a complete different person from the Sam I knew." Ika didn't bother to hide her disappointment.
When Sam showed up in Easter island and presented himself as the CEO of an important company she jumped at the opportunity as though she had been expecting it, precisely because that was the case.
Losing her boyfriend and becoming a holy rank hunter happened at the same time leaving her with no one to help her understand her new power. To make matters worse for her, before she sacrificed Manu at the altar he made her promise to keep what she learned inside the dungeon a secret from the general population meaning she could only talk about it with people who had been inside the dungeon too.
She wanted to speak with Uriel and patiently waited for his return thinking there was no way such a greedy person like him could forego the collective debt Easter island owed him, but as time passed without Uriel showing up she started getting angry towards him. Especially when she realized that Uriel failing to sacrifice Manu at the altar was the reason why she was forced to kill her boyfriend with her own two hands.
But Sam was different. He wasn't indecisive as Uriel nor was he a coward. He was the one who kept the population calm when they were stuck inside the cave and despite Uriel being the one who discovered the dungeon of Te Pito Te Nua, it was actually Sam the first one to enter. Not just that, he was also a holy rank hunter himself which made him the only person who could teach her the ropes.
Unfortunately, Sam proved all she thought about him to be wrong. He was needy, coward and incredibly indecisive. To make matters worse, he even let Wendy treat him like trash despite him being a powerful hunter.
The zeppelin touched ground near the megacity of Sevilla, though it differed greatly from what Sam remembered it despite the short time. It wasn't until they entered the city and mingled with the locals that they learned about the storm that hit the city just a week before which explained not only the poor state of the wall, but also that of the outer buildings.
Sam had seen all manners of storms before and he couldn't help but wonder what kind of hurricane it would have taken to cause such destruction, but Wendy stepped in to provide an answer.
"You may think that humans are above nature just because you can change the course of a river or cause deforestation, but truth is nothing can stop nature. Technology helps overcome many challenges, but in time nature always ends up winning." Wendy said.
"You're kind of knowledgeable to be such an asshole." Ika said, though the red headed huntress ignored her and proceeded to raid as many bakeries as she laid her eyes upon forcing Sam to follow her with a credit card on hand.
If Wendy was troublesome to deal with, Ika was even worse. Being born and raised on a relatively small island with little knowledge about the outside world, even the basic stuff even children knew were a mystery to her.
She crossed the streets in the middle of the block without even bothering looking to the sides, a sin that would have likely ended in death or injury even for a heavenly rank hunter. Thankfully to her, she was able to easily dodge the incoming traffic, which was of little comfort to the poor drivers who ended up crashing due to her reckless behavior and Sam was forced to settle everything with the power of his almighty credit card.
The rest of his crew was less obvious about it, but they too costed a fortune. It wasn't due to fights or settlements but to a spending spree funded by the Fallen company. It was one of the benefits Sam offered to lure the best candidates for his crew, making it clear he didn't have the first clue on how to manage finances. Contrary to Uriel, Sam wasn't a greedy person by nature, though that didn't mean he enjoyed needlessly throwing money left and right.
"I'm screwed..." Sam grimaced as he pondered his life choices arriving at the conclusion that being buried alive was less painful than dealing with his new companions.
