Dungeon Raider System

Chapter 820: Those who fell Part 3

They carried the unconscious hunters back to their zeppelin and handed them over to the medics for decontamination. The first step was to take off their clothes and although Sam seemed evidently interested in Nika despite her current condition, he still looked the other way making Wendy even more confused.

"Are you afraid she will be mad at you? Is that why you don't kill him?" She finally asked while the medics thoroughly scrubbed Nika's naked body without showing much interest.

"Let me ask you a question. How do you think they made it this far in this environment filled with radiation, then fought against a cryptid powerful enough for you to pick up its signature at a distance and won despite being weakened?"

"I have no clue, how did they do it?" Wendy shrugged her shoulders.

"I don't know either, and that is what scares me." muttered the last part to himself, but Wendy's keen senses allowed her to hear it nonetheless.

Wendy remained silent when it was Luna's turn for decontamination and the same with Kristina's, but when it came to Uriel Wendy couldn't help but let out a gasp that the medics followed.

"Sir, I believe you should see this." Said one of the crew members.

"I'm not interested in him in that way, Okay!?" Sam snarled in annoyance.

"There seems to be an anomaly within his body." The medic continued and Wendy joined in.

"This is something I have never seen before and that says something." Wendy extended her hand to touch Uriel's chest where a mysterious deformity had taken place. Apart from the injuries that could be expected from radiation poisoning, his chest was covered by throbbing veins that converged in his left side.

Anyone with a modest knowledge of human anatomy would recognize that to be an anomaly and although it was interesting, a yet more astonishing discovery managed to deviate the attention from Uriel.

"Those are some fine clothes, what material is this?" Wendy whistled at the sight of the underarmor taken from the unconscious hunters. She pulled it to confirm the fabric elasticity and seemed both pleased and taken aback by how far it went.

"It's orichalcum wire." Said Sam after activating his trait to inspect the clothes at a molecular level. He then took a pause to assess the situation and, although he knew Uriel would not appreciate them taking his stuff, it was only fair they got some compensation for saving them.

His initial intention was to wait for Uriel to recover his consciousness and have a proper conversation, but this changed when the crew members he sent to investigate the place where they previously found Uriel's group came back with reports of a strange structure.

Although it was destroyed and only a small portion of its foundation remained, it was easy for same to recognize the building he wanted to find.

Needless to say, the reason why Sam was looking for Uriel was precisely to ask for help in searching the Eiffel tower since his trait was useless in the dust ridden wasteland and although he didn't get the chance to speak with him, Sam did get what he wanted in the end.

Moreover, unbeknownst to all parties involved, the cryptid Luna took down was precisely the guardian of the entrance to the dungeon beneath what used to be Paris. The beast was from a cryptid species known as the apex predator in the country of France, though this particular gevaudan was not just an ordinary member of the Direwolf family but the most powerful individual.

Consuming the gevaudan was actually the only way to kill it, a feat not just any hunter could perform, but unfortunately for Luna it came at a high price as the lead doctor of the Fallen corporation informed.

"This is an instrument used to measure radiation," Said the doctor as she pointed a Geiger counter towards the unconscious hunters. "they've all suffered injuries due to radiation, but their radiation level is dropping steadily. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case of that white haired girl." Said the doctor.

"Woman." Sam corrected.

"This suggest the patient suffered internal radiation exposure, probably due to the ingestion of radioactive material, though I don't see why anyone would do such a thing," The medic continued ignoring Sam's nagging correction, the continued with a spiteful smile. "the only thing I'm certain of is that this person is about to die. Maybe not today or in a week, but even if she got rid of all the radiation the cellular damage she suffered is too much."

"What if we gave her some serum?" Sam asked, though his hopes died when it wasn't the doctor the one who replied but Wendy.

"She's done for. It's not a matter of whether or not she can be healed, there is nothing to heal. The information about what she is supposed to look like is stored within the cells nucleus. Unfortunately to her, radiation destroys the DNA, so..."

"Please, don't say it..." Sam begged and Wendy obliged. The pitiful figures of their starving bodies hit close to home and she couldn't help but pity the tiny huntress whose days were counted.

Although Sam's actions in America branded him as a rogue hunter, the news of Luna's affliction that may as well be considered a death sentence affected him dearly. Tears trickled down his face as he couldn't hold the sadness that overtook him and the only thing he could do to cope with it was to clench his fists as tight with all his might.

As unfortunate as Luna's condition was, though, it played directly along with his plans as it ensured they would not be able to follow them inside the dungeon. It may have seemed merciless to not even wait for her to wake up and break the news to her, but Sam knew all too well that Luna would not take long to figure out her condition was irreversible.

The Fallen corporation ventured further inside the catacombs and started clearing the first floor of the dungeon. Uriel would have loved to get his hands on the knowledge it held on the ancient civilization that gave birth to the dungeon, Luna would have lost her mind in joy discovering the variety of cryptid species inside the catacombs and Medusa would have given an arm for the technology hidden within the dungeon. However, Sam's goal lied beyond those things.

He wasn't intereted in any of those things but in the dungeon itself. It's secluded location and its reputation as a PNR turned it into a place no one would venture without good reason making it the perfect place for his new headquarters. Not just that, albeit in poor condition, the different structures of the dungeon could be repaired with nothing but flux orbs and at their level, they were able to get as many as they wanted.

With two holy rank hunters in their crew, the Fallen corporation breezed through the Dungeon like they were on a picnic. The strongest members killed the cryptids while the weaker ones harvested the flux orbs from the corpses before they vanished.

Sam may have not been an outstanding student like his former friends or as competent in finances like Nika was, but his experience as the head of security in the Dungeon Raiders turned him into a true strategist which helped a lot in clearing the dungeon. What also helped was his eidetic memory, since it allowed him to map the complex catacombs making sure they wouldn't get lost despite its vast size.

By the time Luna woke up, the Fallen corporation had cleared one quarter of the catacombs, though that remained a mystery to Uriel, along with the identity of the person who helped them at the cost of his belongings.

Facing the decision of entering the dungeon alone or accompanying his friends to get the medical assistance she desperately needed, Uriel ended up taking the latter. It was one of those occasions where he knew the right thing to do and did it despite not quite feeling like it.

"I'm sorry, I know you really wanted to explore the catacombs." Luna muttered in a feverish voice.

"Don't worry, Luna," He said tenderly as he patted her head. "this will come directly out of your pocket."

Uriel then closed his eyes and entered his museum, walked past the magnificent golden hall and directly to the souvenir shop. Once there, he browsed through the catalogue passing through the survival gear, the hardware section, gardening, tools, he skimmed through that with disinterest until he eventually found what he was looking for.

Blue sparks of electricity and an apparent distortion in space gave way to the most extravagant purchase he ever performed in the souvenir shop. Hazmat suits, gas masks, lead paint and even a stretcher for Luna, who could not even stand on her own two feet now.

Upon exiting the dungeon they looked like aliens visiting a barren planet, though their appearance was the least of their worries as they traversed the god forsaken wastelands of France.
