Chapter 918: Something went wrong with the sensory deprivation chamber experiment
Oddly enough, the first sense to disappear after entering the sensory deprivation chamber was the sense of touch due to the liquid inside the tank even though by the time the subject was submerged she had already been blindfolded. She couldn't see anything but hazes of light, but that was cut short when the chamber was sealed. The rhythmic sound of the subject's breathing was all she could hear for a few moments, but it wasn't long until the subject's heartbeat became loud as a drum which only worsened in time.
It was such a harrowing experience that most people couldn't possibly imagine, let alone endure. Every slight movement of the subject's body could be heard, from blood pulsing inside the veins to even the normal bodily functions such as the stomach, small burps the subject could not control and even the grinding of joints that sounded a lot similar to the crackling of a sheet of paper.
It was enough to drive anybody insane which was of no wonder considering the extensive budget allocated specifically to that purpose, but although the artificial anechoic chamber was incredibly difficult to put together, the subject had already experienced something similar before and it wasn't until the sounds became too loud to almost hear her own thoughts that Medusa realized it's similitude with the Chamber of echoes.
She covered herself with the so called glistening coat and the effects were immediate allowing her to regain not just her consciousness, but her composure also even though for all effects it was as though she had been transported to another dimension despite knowing she remained in the sensory deprivation chamber.
"Keep your eyes closes, please. I don't want you to dissolve like the others."
"Who are you? What happened to the others?" Asked Medusa not with her voice but her thoughts, yet she could hear them as clear as if she spoke them.
"My name is Athena, and I am here to offer you a bountiful gift designed just for you." The goddess said solemnly.
"You didn't answer my question." Medusa mind scoffed.
"I do not answer to mortals."
"Well, I don't talk to weirdos... actually I do, but only the ones I know and like."
"Weirdo? You dare to offend the goddess of war herself?" Athena bellowed in a thousand voices, yet Medusa refused to even acknowledge which prompted the irked goddess to casually answer. "They dissolved in the liquid you are now floating for they were not worthy of my power."
"Whatever STD you want to give me, you can keep it to yourself." Medusa said now wondering how long would she need to shower to clean herself.
"If you didn't come here to besiege my power, then why did you bother coming to me?"
"Why did I come indeed...," Medusa mind muttered as she tried to put her thoughts into order. Even if she seemed courageous and nonchalant in front of Athena, just feeling her presence was enough to make Medusa want to kneel and apologize for existing. "I was trying to get Sam out of the laptop, then Luna fell asleep and that stupid Tina showed up asking for urgent help. None of the colonels wanted to help which meant the Dungeon Raiders had to take a step forward like usual..."
"More than taking a step forward, it sounds to me like the rest took a step backwards." Athena chuckled.
"If the result is the same, then it's all the same to me." Medusa let out.
"I am deeply ashamed to say, that the fate of your comrades was sealed the moment they looked at me. I tried to be gentle, but they... melted." Athena apologized.
"It's alright, it's not like I knew them."
"I don't mean to be rude, but why are you still alive?"
"You are the goddess, you tell me." Medusa mind shrugged.
"It seems to me that you preserved your individuality by pouring your soul outside your body, but that can't be all. Are you one of the chosen?"
"I have no idea what you're talking about and I would like to continue our chat, but I have lot going on so..."
"Wait, don't leave yet. I still want to give you a gift, even if it's not my power there must be something you want." Athena said.
"What were you the goddess of again?"
"War." Athena replied with the pride of a warrior.
"Hmm...," Medusa pondered. "no thanks, we got plenty of that."
"Are you actually refusing the gift of a goddess?"
"Like a friend of mine likes to say all the time, there is no such thing as a free meal. If what you're giving me something I can't take on my own, then you're gifting me a debt. And if what you're giving me is something I can attain by myself, then I'll do so in due time."
"Wise words for a mortal, carry on with your small life then." Athena said dejected that she missed on the perfect candidate to bestow her powers to.
"That was interesting." Medusa said as she exited the anechoic chamber which was located inside the Celes laboratory.
"Did it fail? Get back inside, I will re calibrate the machine on my end." Fermi spoke through a speaker.
"No, Professor, it worked fine. I spoke with someone who said was a goddess." Medusa informed.
"But you were there less than five seconds!" Fermi said agape.
"It felt way longer than that... shoot! I forgot to ask her what is going on in the city. I'll be right back." Medusa said as she submerged herself back on the chamber.
"Back so soon? I wasn't expecting to ever seeing you again," Athena spoke, but this time things were different as Medusa forgot to put back on an important piece of gear, the blindfold. "you!" Athena spoke in an accusing tone as she saw Medusa's glimmering crimson eyes.
"Yes?" Medusa asked in a stutter as she witnessed Athena's power of presence.
"You are the brood of that bitch!" Athena shouted in the thousand voices, but Medusa somehow spoke over her.
"You did not just call my mother a bitch, you bitch!" Medusa focused her flux energy on her eyes out of anger, but even though her trait was deemed quite powerful and strong enough even to affect a holy rank hunter, it caused no effect on the goddess of war.
"I did because that's what she is and you're probably just the same. All high and mighty trying to use my own power against me. I spared you because I thought you were brave enough to stand up against a goddess which impressed me, but now I know it was mere ignorance. Now you will have to pay the price." Athena said and while Medusa would have loved to argue back, she could not deny that she was naive. After all, the experiment was set on by Professor Fermi, a man well known for his eccentric behavior and lack of regard for safety.
It was a well known fact that Fermi would not second guess putting his hand in a blender if that meant learning something about physics and now Medusa did the equivalent, only instead of her hand it was her entire self.
The anechoic chamber allowed Medusa to speak to Athena which was admittedly an outstanding feat for science, but she had not considered that even a god's voice could be considered a weapon and just by speaking a word they could change the course of a person life and that of their descendants.
"From here onward you and up to your seventh generation will be unable to experience love." Athena sentenced and made a pause to enjoy the pain her words would cause in the victim of her curse.
"Is that it?" Medusa asked after blinking a couple times.
"Well, yes. Are you not worried that you just lost the most powerful emotion for a human being?" Athena mumbled.
"I mean, yes, that's terrible and all but... I gave up on love a while ago and about children, I'm not too concerned since I don't plan on having any."
"What do you mean you're not planning on bearing children, that's what we women are for." Athena asked in utter disbelief.
"Are you for real? So much for the goddess of war," Medusa scoffed then continued with a grin. "see you later."
"You better pray we don't ever cross paths again." Athena warned.
"You're the one who called my mother a bitch. I don't know if gods have religion, but when we meet again I'll make sure you wish you had one." Medusa scoffed before exiting the chamber once more causing the goddess of war to throw the god's equivalent to a temper tantrum.
Electric lights burst out and the water moved as though affected by an earthquake, eventually cracking the quartz glass container allowing several distortions on reality itself to spread like wildfires.
From objects being displaced to doors appearing in places where there were none just a few seconds ago. Everything shifted as Medusa walked the path back to the laboratory, but the huntress showed. no fear and instead seemed thrilled because she now knew the face of her enemy, the so called goddess who cursed her family.
