"Gospel!"

"Valhalla's Call!" Alfia's whisper reached Mika's ears just as the sonic wave erupted.

He hadn't anticipated her being able to unleash three consecutive wide-area sonic magic attacks in such quick succession.

Casting magic wasn't just about reciting an incantation.

It required channeling and manipulating mana through specific pathways within the body.

Any disruption to this flow could result in a Magic Backfire—a potentially fatal internal explosion.

Therefore, most mages couldn't move while casting, needing to focus all their attention on controlling the flow of mana.

This was why they relied so heavily on their comrades for protection.

Moving while casting was a skill few mages mastered.

The power of a spell was often determined by the length of its incantation.

Longer chants typically involved manipulating larger amounts of mana, resulting in more powerful spells.

However, Alfia's magic defied this convention. Her sonic magic incantations were incredibly short, yet their power was immense.

This was due to her extraordinary speed in manipulating mana, far surpassing that of other mages.

She could achieve the same level of power with a short chant that others required lengthy incantations for.

However, this came at a cost.

The increased speed placed a tremendous strain on her body.

Even Riveria, a highly skilled mage, needed time to recover after casting a high-level spell.

Casting multiple spells in quick succession could cause serious injury.

This was why Mika had chosen this moment to attack, immediately after her second wide-area spell.

But he hadn't anticipated her unleashing a Third.

He was now in 'grave' danger.

....

"Crack!"

"Argh!" Mika was directly in front of Alfia, his sword, Arondight, inches from her forehead.

However, those few inches were now an insurmountable chasm.

The force of the sonic wave was pushing him back.

If not for his wings, and his own desperate lunge forward, he would have been thrown back.

But even so, he couldn't advance.

And at such close range, he bore the full brunt of Valhalla's Call.

The sonic waves tore at his armor, creating cracks and fissures, blood seeping through.

His entire body was under attack: skin, muscles, bones, organs, blood vessels, nerves—nothing was spared.

"I can't let this continue!" He felt the damage accumulating within his body.

Alfia's magic was incredibly powerful.

A single Valhalla's Call could shake the entire city.

Facing it head-on was suicidal.

"I need a different approach." He prepared to retreat.

Just then, blood trickled from the corner of Alfia's lips.

Mika's eyes lit up. "As I suspected, she couldn't unleash three consecutive Valhalla's Calls without suffering consequences."

"She's injured." His resolve hardened; there was no turning back now.

He was badly hurt, but he was certain Alfia was in worse condition.

He couldn't give her a chance to recover.

"Then let's see who has greater endurance."

"Argh!" he roared, unleashing a burst of flames from his wings, adding to his momentum. He pushed forward against the force of her magic.

"Don't push your luck!" Alfia growled, more blood trickling from her lips.

The strain of casting multiple spells in quick succession, especially while maintaining a constant flow of magic to counter Mika's attacks, had taken its toll.

Her internal injuries worsened.

Mika, too, was suffering. At such close range, Valhalla's Call had turned him into a bloody mess.

His body was ravaged, blood seeping from countless wounds.

His armor was stained crimson.

He couldn't even reach for a Potion; the sonic waves would shatter it the moment it left his storage.

But he didn't need a Potion. His Death Battle skill was activating.

Death Battle:

Negates the effects of negative status ailments on combat abilities.

Combat abilities increase significantly as injuries worsen.

On the verge of death, his strength surged, pushing him closer to his limits.

Arondight's tip was now inches from Alfia's forehead.

.....

.....

"Argh!" Mika roared, his sword poised to strike. Empowered by Death Battle, his strength grew with each passing moment, each new injury fueling his power.

"Argh!" Even Alfia, usually calm and composed, couldn't help but cry out. She knew death was imminent.

But no matter how she channeled her magic, she couldn't increase the power of her sonic magic any further. It had reached its limit.

It was, after all, just a short-chant spell. While her talent had amplified it to a wide-area attack, that was its peak.

And now, Mika's power had surpassed it!

.....

His blade was about to pierce her skull.

"Am I going to lose?"

"Am I going to die?" She gazed at Mika's face, a subtle smile touching her lips. She had long since accepted the possibility of death.

And the hero she had chosen to entrust her hopes to was right before her.

It was a fitting end.

But…she couldn't help but feel a pang of regret. Memories of their failed expedition against the Black Dragon flooded her mind. She had vowed never to experience such defeat again.

Why was she the one entrusting her dreams to another, instead of fulfilling them herself?

The smile vanished from her face, replaced by a fierce resolve. She would continue fighting.

.....

She abruptly ceased channeling her magic and dodged. But she was too close; Mika was already upon her.

"Die!"

"Bang!" As she moved, his sword plunged into the earth, the impact creating a massive crater, obliterating everything within a hundred-meter radius.

"Did she dodge?" Mika muttered, looking down at the blood and the severed arm at his feet.

He stood up and saw Alfia, now missing an arm, standing before him.

"I thought that would finish you. I didn't expect you to avoid a fatal blow."

Alfia remained unmoved, her gaze fixed on him.

Mika was covered in blood, his internal organs ravaged. He should have been incapacitated, but Death Battle kept him fighting at his peak.

However, he couldn't ignore his injuries.

While Death Battle maintained his strength, it didn't heal his wounds.

If his injuries became too severe, even Death Battle couldn't save him.

"It seems we're both down to our last attack," Alfia said softly. They were both grievously injured, but a single Potion could heal them.

However, neither would give the other the chance to use one. This was the difference between a true battle and a dungeon crawl. In a real fight, there was no time for healing.

"Let's settle this with one final attack."

Despite her severed arm, Alfia's expression remained calm. She would unleash her full power, leaving no regrets.

"One final attack…" Mika raised his sword. "Then come."

Alfia smiled. She raised her remaining arm and began to chant.

"[Curse of Blessing, hatred of birth, devouring half of myself—my original sin.]" It was the first time Mika had heard her use a long incantation.

"[Uncleansed, unpurified, unredeemed, the sound that echoes through the sky is my sin.]"

Mika watched impassively as a pillar of light began to rise around her. He had anticipated this the moment she suggested ending their duel with a single attack.

"[Trumpet of the Gods, harp of the spirits, melody of light, mark of sin, this is the fate of I, who loved by the Heaven!]"

He didn't know much about Alfia's magic, only that, according to legend, she had used this very spell to slay the Leviathan.

"[Shatter and turn to ash! I despise thee utterly! The price shall be paid! With this testament of sin, I destroy all things!]" It was undoubtedly her most powerful magic.

But as he felt the destructive power emanating from the pillar of light, Mika couldn't help but smile.

....

"Finally…you've unleashed it."

He raised his sword, and flames erupted around him.

A hush fell over Orario. Everyone, regardless of their location or allegiance, stopped fighting and looked towards the sky.

Two pillars of light, one white, one crimson, pierced the sky at the edge of the city. Even from a distance, they could feel the chilling aura of death.

"What's happening? What is that attack?"

"Gods! Are they unleashing their divine power?"

"I don't know about divine power, but I know Orario is about to be destroyed!"

Panic spread through the city.

At the base of Babel Tower, Airmid's face paled as she saw the crimson pillar of light.

"Mika!"

.....

.....

"Argh!" Engulfed in flames, Mika's body burned.

Having discerned the secret of Alfia's magic negation, he had been waiting for this opportunity.

Once deactivated, her Silence required a new incantation to reactivate.

And while casting her wide-area annihilation magic, she couldn't use other spells. This gave him the opening he needed.

"Wide-area magic against wide-area magic? Then let's see which one is stronger!"

"Apocalypse: Götterdämmerung!" Alfia swung her remaining arm, unleashing her most powerful attack.

"Heavenly Fire: Calamity Annihilation!"
