"Argh!" Riser roared in fury as crimson Flames erupted from the chasm, his voice echoing through the air. He hadn't anticipated that his strategy of keeping his peerage close would backfire so spectacularly.

"That's what you get for underestimating me," Mika chuckled.

"Akeno, your opponent has arrived."

"The Bomb Queen?" Akeno's Devil wings unfolded as she ascended.

"I've been looking for her. I didn't realize she was hiding near Riser. Fortunately, your earlier attack forced her to use her Phoenix Tears. Otherwise, I wouldn't be confident facing her."

"I'll have to thank you properly later," she added with a playful wink.

"....."

Mika turned his attention back to Riser. It was time for the final showdown.

"Let's settle this—Riser."

"Very well."

High above Kuoh Academy, Mika and Riser locked eyes, the decisive battle about to begin.

Riser attacked first, his hands igniting with Phoenix Flames that shot towards Mika.

He dodged, his wings beating rapidly as he closed the distance.

The Flames struck the ground, exploding and igniting the surrounding area.

While this created a distraction for Issei and the others below, it didn't hinder Mika's advance.

As he approached, Riser adjusted his aim, his Flames growing more precise.

Soon, Mika could no longer rely on simple dodging. As a stream of Fire headed straight for him, he calmly exhaled, and the Flames froze mid-air.

Having faced Esdeath, Mika was a seasoned veteran when it came to manipulating ice.

He had never encountered anyone who surpassed her in that regard.

The techniques he had learned from her were incredibly effective, even against a Phoenix.

"What?!" Riser stared at the frozen Flames in disbelief.

He couldn't comprehend it.

How could the Phoenix Flames—be frozen?

He quickly recovered. While the phenomenon surprised him, his focus was on the battle, not on understanding it.

However, by the time he refocused, Mika was already upon him.

"Hesitation on the battlefield is a fatal flaw." Mika's spear flashed, slicing through Riser's throat, severing his head.

He continued his momentum, watching as Riser's falling body disintegrated into Flames, then reforming. He had resurrected.

"My apologies. That was my mistake. Such carelessness is a disgrace to the Phenex clan. I'll be more—focused now," Riser said, his body fully restored as he ascended once more.

"Don't tell me you thought you had won?"

"Of course not. I'm prepared for a long battle. Besides, I have several…ideas I'd like to test out on you."

"Then prepare yourself. Here I come!"

Mika charged, and Riser, abandoning his earlier arrogance, retreated, unleashing a barrage of Phoenix Flames.

Even though Mika was seemingly unaffected by them, he didn't stop his assault.

Their earlier exchange had made one thing clear: Mika was stronger.

Therefore, Riser resorted to his ultimate tactic—Attrition.

As a descendant of the Phoenix, each resurrection restored him to peak condition, except for his mental state.

Therefore, against stronger opponents, his strategy was to wear them down, to see whose resolve would break first.

After all, his opponents lacked his regenerative abilities. Their stamina, magic power, and life force were finite.

He would chip away at their strength with each resurrected attack.

Even if each exchange cost him one hundred units of energy to deplete ten of theirs, he had countless "Hundreds" to spend before his spirit faltered.

This was why he had remained undefeated in Rating Games.

Even Rias—who has the Power of Destruction inherited from her mother's family, and was arguably stronger in terms of raw power, couldn't outlast him.

But Mika—

"Attrition won't work on me," he said with a smile, observing Riser's intentions.

....

High above Kuoh Academy.

Two blurs, one crimson, one blue, streaked across the sky—Mika and Riser.

Mika, seeing through Riser's strategy, grinned and unleashed a burst of Flames from his wings, his speed increasing dramatically. He caught up to Riser, his spear flashing.

Riser's arm was severed.

"Your skills are—underwhelming. I thought you were going to try and kill me with that burst of speed," he taunted.

"A severed arm won't break my spirit." He focused his will, and Flames ignited around his wound. He expected it to regenerate, as it always did.

But it didn't...

"W-What's going on?!" He stared at his unhealing wound in disbelief. His Phoenix Flames, his most treasured ability, were failing him.

"I see…" Mika nodded, realizing his Radiant Spear's curse was indeed taking effect.

However, he knew it wouldn't last. The curse would be dispelled upon Riser's resurrection, just like negative status effects in a game were reset upon death.

This was why Riser had been able to resurrect after their earlier clash.

"As expected of the power of the Phoenix—It can't be so easily countered," he mused.

Riser, after a moment of panic, regained his composure and chose to self-destruct. Upon his resurrection, his arm was fully restored.

"So, his [Sacred Gear] carries a curse that prevents healing. But that doesn't matter. I simply need to resurrect to dispel it. If he wants to break my spirit, he'll have to keep killing me. And each time I resurrect, the curse will be lifted." He couldn't help but grin.

"What's so funny?" Mika asked.

"Did you think you had figured out my abilities? I have a few more—ideas I'd like to test." Mika clenched his left fist, and a white Light emanated from between his fingers, forming a spear of pure Light.

"That's—the Power of Light!" Riser exclaimed, sensing the immense power emanating from the spear.

"How can you have the Power of Light?! You're a Devil!!!"

"Nothing is impossible. I developed this power myself," Mika lied, taking credit for Gabriel's work.

He knew the source of this new power would be questioned. Hesitation or evasion would only lead to further scrutiny.

It was better to claim it as his own.

"Let's test its power." He grinned and charged, his speed too fast for Riser to react. The Light spear pierced his body.

"Argh!" Riser screamed in pain—Phoenix Flames erupting from his wounds as he thrashed wildly.

Mika pressed his advantage—inflicting more injuries, until Riser was once again forced to resurrect.

Mika hovered in mid-air, examining the Light spear.

His earlier attack had allowed him to assess its properties. It was similar in power to demonic energy, but with a distinct advantage against Devils.

However, this advantage could be countered by sufficiently powerful demonic energy. Therefore, weaker Devils were more susceptible to its effects, while stronger ones could resist it.

Seeing Riser resurrect, his body fully restored, Mika dispelled the Light spear. He realized that while it did suppress Riser's regeneration, its effectiveness was no greater than the curse from Radiant Spear.

Therefore, he decided to use his Spear. However, he wasn't disappointed by the Power of Light.

After all, he hadn't intended to rely on it to defeat Riser.

It contained the divine power of the God of the Bible—a power he was eager to explore further in the future.

But for now, he would stick to demonic energy, which, as a Devil—he could access and manipulate far more easily than the Power of Light.

"What's wrong? Not using your Light spear anymore?" Riser taunted, laughing.

"Did you think that could defeat me? While it does suppress my regeneration, it's not nearly potent enough. Your Light isn't—divine enough."

His laughter echoed through the air.

"Finished?" Mika asked coldly as Riser's laughter subsided. "Then prepare for your defeat. I've finished my—experiments. Now, I'll show you what true power is."

He glared at Riser.

There were two ways to defeat him: repeatedly kill him until his spirit broke, or overwhelm him with sheer power, shattering both his body and his soul. Both Rias and Riser believed he would choose the former.

But Mika intended to use the latter.

He would crush Riser utterly.
