Chapter 8: The Shelter, The Bargain
Harun left the room, leaving Kaelen alone with his thoughts. The room wasn't completely dark, but it was gloomy. There was only a faint light from a single lamp, and the echo of Kaelen's thoughts filled the space. His body was exhausted, and his hands were still trembling slightly from the mana depletion. But his mind was clearer than ever.
Kaelen didn't see Harun as an evil or tyrannical leader. He saw him as a predator, a strategic leader who saw his power as an opportunity, not just a threat. For this reason, Kaelen knew he couldn't confront him with brute force.
The idea of killing the entire group seemed tempting, but it would have been a fatal mistake. It wasn't about morality or mercy; it was about logic. The group, despite its limited numbers, would be a major obstacle. It would be a battle of attrition, and in the end, Kaelen might find himself, having exhausted all his energy, alone and facing a greater danger.
No. That was not the solution. He had to think more cunningly.
The bargaining chip, Emily, was the point Harun knew would affect him. Kaelen wasn't interested in promises of protection or resources; his focus was solely on Emily.
This interest wasn't due to any special feelings. Rather, it was because Kaelen's power system had clearly indicated that Emily's healing ability was part of the same cosmic system that governed his own powers. She wasn't just an ordinary survivor; she was a key to Kaelen's future and an important element for his survival, due to her ability to heal and regenerate. Protecting Emily wasn't an emotional choice, but a strategic necessity. She was an asset, and he had to protect her to ensure his own survival and development in this new world.
He had to pretend to cooperate to ensure her safety, and then, he could plan his escape.
This was the only way.
Kaelen stood up, raised his still-trembling hand, and looked at his reflection in the metallic tabletop. He saw tired eyes, but they shone with a determined resolve. This was not a decision to surrender, but a decision to put a new strategy in place. He had to pretend to play the game, but he knew he would play by his own rules.
