Chapter 41: Varethis
Kale and his team arrived in Varethis, a cityremembered this place well—it was here that the Divine Order had abducted a mage, a woman whose unique ability allowed her to control the magic of others, provided it was weaker than her own. In his past timeline, she had ascended to the rank of an Eighth-Circle Mage, a force few could rival.
As they navigated the crowded streets, Rei's breathing grew uneven. His steps faltered, and his grip on Kale's sleeve tightened.
Kale turned to him, "Rei? What's wrong?"Rei's voice trembled. "Too many people… The way they look at me—it's the same as back then." His fingers clenched, his nails digging into Kale's hand."I'm here. They won't touch you."
Rei's eyes widened at the reassurance before he nodded slightly, pressing closer.
Serene, watching the exchange, crossed her arms. "You never hold my hand like that."
Kale sighed. "You don't need it."
She huffed but said nothing more as they reached a modest-looking inn. As they stood at the counter, hushed conversations from nearby patrons drifted to their ears.
"The Divine Order is truly a blessing. Their rule brings order to this world."
"Did you hear? They've acquired another powerful mage. Their reach is endless."
Kale's jaw tightened. He exchanged a glance with his team before accepting the key and leading them upstairs. Once inside their room, he turned to Selene.
"Keep an eye on their base. Stay hidden."
Selene smirked, her golden eyes gleaming.
"yes my lord"
