Chapter 27: Chapter 26

THE CELESTIAL HUNTERS

The night was unnaturally still, the air heavy with tension as Amara and Lysander prepared to leave the ruins. Their bond, freshly forged, hummed with a quiet power that made Amara feel invincible.

But that sense of safety shattered when the ground beneath them trembled. A cold wind swept through the ruins, carrying whispers that sent chills down Amara's spine.

"They're here," Lysander said, his voice sharp. His chains uncoiled, bristling like living weapons.

Amara stepped closer to him, her powers sparking faintly in her hands. "Who's here?"

Before Lysander could answer, a figure emerged from the shadows: Dorian. His celestial wings shimmered faintly in the dim light, a stark contrast to the hardened expression on his face.

"Dorian," Amara said, relief flooding her. "You found us!"

But Lysander's body tensed, his chains snapping toward Dorian. "Stay back, Amara," he warned.

Dorian raised a hand, a placating gesture. "Amara, listen to me," he began, his tone calm but edged with urgency. "I warned you about the path you're on. The bond you've forged with him has made you a beacon to the Celestials. They know where you are now, and they're coming."

"Then help us fight them," Amara said, stepping forward.

Dorian's gaze shifted to Lysander, and for a moment, something dark flickered in his eyes. "I can't. My loyalty lies with the Celestials."

Amara's heart dropped. "You… betrayed us?"

Dorian's wings flared out, and the air around him crackled with energy. "It's not betrayal, Amara. It's salvation. If you come with me now, I can convince the Celestials to spare your life."

"And what about Lysander?" she demanded.

Dorian's silence was answer enough.

Before Amara could respond, the sky above the ruins split open, a blinding light pouring through the rift. From the light emerged three celestial beings, their forms cloaked in golden armor, their faces obscured by radiant masks.

Lysander's chains lashed out, forming a protective barrier around Amara. "The Celestial Hunters," he growled. "Elite assassins. They won't stop until we're dead."

The lead hunter stepped forward, wielding a blade that shimmered with otherworldly fire. "Amara, the Catalyst," the hunter said, their voice echoing like thunder. "Surrender, and we will end this painlessly."

"Like hell she will," Lysander spat, his chains whipping toward the hunter.

The battle erupted in an instant. The hunters moved with inhuman speed, their weapons leaving trails of light as they clashed with Lysander's chains. Amara unleashed her powers, bolts of shadow and light colliding with the celestial energy around them.

Dorian watched from the edge of the fray, his expression torn.

One of the hunters broke away from Lysander, their blade aimed at Amara. She barely dodged, summoning a shield of shadow to block the next strike. The impact sent her stumbling, but the bond with Lysander surged within her, lending her strength.

"I'm not going down without a fight," she said, her voice steady despite the fear coursing through her.

The hunter hesitated for a moment, as if surprised by her resolve, but pressed the attack. Amara countered with a burst of energy, forcing the hunter back.

Meanwhile, Lysander was locked in a brutal struggle with the lead hunter. Their weapons clashed, sparks flying as the celestial blade met shadow-forged chains.

"You should've stayed in the shadows where you belong," the hunter sneered.

"And you should've stayed in your ivory tower," Lysander retorted, his chains wrapping around the hunter's weapon and wrenching it from their grasp.

Amara's focus was pulled away from the fight as she saw Dorian approach her, his expression unreadable.

"Dorian, please," she pleaded. "You don't have to do this."

"I wish it were that simple," he said, his voice heavy with regret. "But the Celestials won't stop until the curse is broken—and you're the key to that."

Before she could respond, Dorian raised his hand, and a wave of celestial energy surged toward her. The blast caught her off guard, sending her crashing into the ruins.

"Amara!" Lysander shouted, his fury igniting a dark aura around him. His chains lashed out wildly, forcing the hunters to retreat momentarily.

Dorian hesitated, his hand trembling as he prepared another attack. "I'm doing this for your own good, Amara."

"No," she said, pushing herself to her feet. "You're doing this for them. And I won't let you decide my fate."

Her powers flared, a mixture of shadow and light weaving together as she faced him.

The battle raged on, but the Celestial Hunters began to gain the upper hand. Lysander was injured, his chains slower and weaker than before. Amara's powers were draining rapidly, and Dorian's betrayal left her shaken.

"We need to retreat," Lysander said, pulling her toward him.

"No," Amara protested. "We can't just run!"

"We have no choice," he said, his voice firm but gentle. "If we stay, they'll kill us both."

Reluctantly, Amara nodded. Lysander's chains wrapped around them, and with a surge of shadow, they vanished into the darkness.

They reappeared in a secluded forest far from the ruins, both of them collapsing from exhaustion.

Amara stared at the ground, her fists clenched. "We were so close," she said, her voice trembling. "And Dorian—he betrayed us."

Lysander knelt beside her, placing a hand on her shoulder. "I know it hurts, but we'll find another way. The bond we share is stronger than anything they can throw at us."

She looked at him, her resolve hardening. "Then we fight. No more running. If they want to take me, they'll have to destroy me first."

Lysander nodded, his golden eyes blazing. "We'll face them together, Amara. And this time, we'll make them regret underestimating us."

The Celestials had drawn first blood, but Amara and Lysander were far from defeated.
