Chapter 506: Invasion; Cedric's Peril
--
Roderika thought she had this covered...
The sudden invasion was completely out of her expectations, but it didn't make the situation too hopeless. Fortunately, the seclusion chamber was also one of the buildings that had that protective bubble, preventing the void from seeping in.
Obviously, it became one of the prime targets for Void Creatures to attack, but Roderika didn't struggle against them. Her task was to protect Cedric during his breakthrough. And she thought that since the building was secured, there was nothing to worry about.
Her worries disappeared completely, especially after seeing the Wise Dragon Emperor swooping down and breathing fire to melt down the void. She witnessed as the tide practically evaporated at the speed visible to the naked eye until only smoke was left.
Since this was pretty much dealt with and the shield isolating the building was still intact, Roderika relaxed. Now, what she needs to do is wait until Cedric concludes his breakthrough, which she's almost certain will succeed given the aptitude of that kid.
It was at this point that suddenly a humongous shadow loomed over the area. And under her surprised face, the Dragon Chancellor shrank down to his usual size and effortlessly walked into the building where she's at.
Roderika dared to not be negligent; she hurriedly came down and greeted him...
"You grace us with your presence, Chancellor. How can I help you?"
The predatory eyes of the Wise Dragon Chancellor swept through her once, and that already made her feel extremely exposed. But that didn't last long because apparently, he didn't come here for her.
"You've been negligent."
The cold and sharp words of the Dragon Chancellor pierced through her.
At first, she didn't understand what prompted this sudden accusation. But then, the Wise Dragon Chancellor suddenly uprooted the entire building with a single swipe of his claws.
The layers were easily peeled, exposing Cedric, who's having his breakthrough inside. Roderika was aghast at this very abrupt offense, but it was only when she saw Cedric's state that she understood why the Dragon Chancellor accused her of being negligent.
"N-no! How could this be!?" Roderika blanched as she saw Cedric's current state.
Contrary to what she initially thought, Cedric was certainly not having an easy time. He was surrounded with thin tendrils of pitch-black darkness, corrupting him from outside in. With what little of his face that's recognizable, one could easily deduce that he was experiencing immense pain.
Roderika looked around and saw where it went wrong.
As it turned out, the protective bubble on building one protected it from the void outside. With how dense the tide was earlier and considering its withering properties, the void somehow melted the ground deep enough to find a small fault in the bubble's defenses.
And like a spring breaking out of the ground, a small puddle of the void appeared precisely at Cedric's seclusion spot. And what a timing too, because it gushed out like a geyser at the same moment that Cedric was done with the Life and Death Laws refinement; it was just waiting for the Karmic Laws' baptism.
Yet it wasn't Karma that answered him...it was the Void.
Roderika blanched even further. The shame of her negligence and failure drowned her senses as she weakly collapsed to the ground. This was followed by self-blame and remorse.
On the other hand, Chancellor Igor was hesitating...
By all logic, he should interfere. He should make a move and save this child from the void infection, especially given this child's identity and how sensitive this situation was for him.
And yet his wisdom contradicted him. Because of the clues he could glean from what he's seeing, the child was doing remarkably well.
Sure, he was in pain. Yes, he was definitely fighting tooth and nail for control, but he's holding on strong.
The most important part, however, is that there is something within the boy that's stubbornly resisting the influence of the void, something that was more than just his indomitable spirit.
Additionally, while the void was certainly harmful to living beings, somehow, it's currently being used by the child to refine his physique even more!
All logic said that this shouldn't be possible...that this was suicide. Yet somehow, maybe it's because it's happening during a breakthrough; it is working.
Using harmful elements to refine oneself to elevate them to another level was the idea behind Life Evolution itself. By all means, what he's witnessing now is legit and follows the logic behind that. Additionally, the boy was doing exceptionally well, so how could anybody expect him to stop this?
"What the fuck!?" The Primal Beast Chancellor exclaimed right next to him. Chancellor Igor didn't even know he was there.
"Why aren't you stopping this madness?" The Mystic Fae Chancellor anxiously asked.
Chancellor Igor sighed and said, "Observe him carefully, and remember the idea behind Life Evolution; maybe you'll understand why I'm not interfering."
His reply came as a surprise to them, and so, they analyzed the situation with whatever means they had. They had varying reactions after realizing what this child was trying to do.
"The Void got to him before the Karmic Laws did." The Mystic Fae Chancellor sighed.
He used a spell just now that allowed him to see the past based on the residual aura left on time and space here. He personally saw how Cedric's breakthrough was initially going smoothly, too smoothly, even, right before the disaster struck him.
"He smells tough; no wonder he could still hold on." The Primal Beast Chancellor added, "I can also smell his determination to get through this."
The Mystic Fae Chancellor then said, "He's already aware of what's happening to him. Alas, he's in the middle of a breakthrough when this happened. He can't stop it just because he wants to, or else he will die. That's why he could only do his best to survive this in another way."
Roderika felt even more horrible as she listened to their words. She blamed herself even more for what's happening. Had she been more considerate and alert, this wouldn't have happened to him. Experience more on My Virtual Library Empire
What hurts even more is that she initially felt good about herself, thinking that she's making it up to him by personally guarding him and making sure that he won't get disturbed. She also felt confident that she could handle this on her own, that they didn't need anybody else. Why would they when she's a bona fide cosmic-level expert?
Honestly, what could go wrong?
Well...
**
Cedric doesn't have an idea that he's being watched by the Chancellors right now. Even if he does, he's not in a position to care. Solving the crisis in his life takes priority, after all.
He wasn't even given a chance to complain. The crisis came so suddenly, and he was caught completely off-guard. It was so sudden that he didn't even think about blaming Roderika for this.
If it's still not obvious, Cedric feels horrible.
The feeling of inducting the void's energy to refine his physical body felt like hundreds of leeches sucking the life out of him. Add the fact that his nature as a creature of the Primordial Chaos adamantly hates whatever he was doing, and this just becomes even more challenging.
Cedric didn't have a choice. The void erupted directly beneath him like a geyser, completely drenching his very exposed physique ever so suddenly.
He couldn't pause his breakthrough to cleanse himself because that's suicide, yet he also shouldn't be exposed to the harmful substance of the void since that's also suicide.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't. There's essentially no escape here.
That's where the idea of using the void to refine his body came to him. Yes, it was outlandish. It's the same as courting death, but the difference is that there is a chance here.
The idea is to use the void to refine his physique, replacing what the Karmic Laws should be doing instead, being the final step before he enters the Transitional Realm.
His thought is that if he successfully does this, then he might get a physique that's, at least, resistant to the void. He didn't need a complete resistance, just enough so that he could live through this.
Doing this was way better than giving up and accepting death. Cedric wasn't willing to die here just yet. He still has many things to do.
And that's how he got into this situation. Cedric was forced into this path, and whether he survives it or not will depend on his abilities and luck.
Unlike the elements that he used before, the Void was a mysterious entity to him. He never even thought about playing with it in the past, and that may have something to do with his natural repulsion to it due to him being a creature of chaos.
And yet...as he went on with his breakthrough, surprisingly, it wasn't as hard as he initially thought it would be. He thought that the void energy would be unruly, but so far, he's managing.
But maybe it's only because the caveat is that he had to endure monstrous amounts of pain to force a way for his survival.
And this pain was certainly much, much worse than being eaten alive by zombies.
