Chapter 17: The Roar of the Jungle
The humid air clung to Clay Klient's skin as he crouched low behind a thicket of oversized ferns. His breath was steady despite the tension crackling through the jungle like a taut bowstring. The thick canopy overhead filtered shafts of golden light, dappling the forest floor in shifting patches. Even with the towering trees offering cover, every instinct in Clay's body screamed at him to stay alert.
Something was coming—something dangerous.
Clay activated his Appraiser skill, the familiar warm glow flickering over his vision as rows of information materialized before him.
[Beast Detected: Ironhide Basilisk]
[Rank: High-Tier Alpha Predator]
[Abilities: Stone Skin, Venomous Spines, Enhanced Perception]
A grimace tugged at Clay's lips. "Of course, it has enhanced perception," he muttered under his breath. As if surviving this jungle wasn't already hard enough.
The underbrush rustled violently as the beast prowled closer. The Ironhide Basilisk was a monstrous creature with obsidian-black scales that shimmered like polished stone. Its eyes gleamed with malevolent intelligence, and venom-dripping spines jutted out along its muscular back.
Rekkan, Clay's loyal beast companion, let out a low growl beside him. The massive wolf-like creature's silver fur bristled, its yellow eyes locked onto the approaching predator.
"Easy, Rekkan," Clay whispered, placing a calming hand on the beast's neck. "We're not picking this fight unless we have to."
Rekkan huffed but obeyed, muscles coiled like springs ready to snap.
Clay's mind raced. The Basilisk's stone-like skin made it nearly impervious to conventional attacks. Its venomous spines added an extra layer of danger, making close combat suicidal. But there had to be a weakness—there always was.
Appraiser skill activated:
[Weak Point: Throat beneath jawline—unarmored]
Clay's eyes narrowed. "Gotcha," he whispered.
The Basilisk let out a bone-rattling roar, shaking the ground beneath their feet. Birds scattered from the treetops, and smaller creatures scurried away in terror. The beast's gaze swept the jungle, searching for its prey.
"Stay low," Clay commanded Rekkan. The wolf-like beast melted into the shadows, its powerful frame nearly invisible against the dense foliage.
Clay took a slow, measured breath. He had faced dangerous creatures before, but this was different. The Basilisk was smarter—a true apex predator. One wrong move could mean death.
He reached for the short blade strapped to his thigh, its edge gleaming faintly in the dim light. The weapon alone wouldn't be enough to take down the Basilisk, but it wasn't meant to. Clay had something else in mind.
"Time to test the Domination skill," he muttered. He hadn't fully mastered it yet, but desperate times called for bold moves.
Closing his eyes, Clay focused on the swirling energy within him—the raw, untamed power gifted to him upon reincarnation. He extended his will toward the Basilisk, feeling the beast's primal rage and instincts pushing back like a tidal wave.
Domination Skill Activated
[Attempting Control…]
The Basilisk roared in defiance, thrashing wildly as it resisted the mental intrusion. Clay gritted his teeth, sweat beading on his forehead. The creature's will was formidable, but Clay wasn't about to back down.
"Submit," Clay growled through clenched teeth, pouring every ounce of his determination into the command.
The Basilisk faltered, its movements growing sluggish. Its glowing eyes flickered with confusion as the Domination skill took hold. For a brief, heart-stopping moment, the beast stood still, its massive form looming like a shadow of death.
Clay seized the opportunity. "Rekkan, now!"
The silver-furred beast exploded from the shadows, a blur of fangs and fury. Rekkan leaped onto the Basilisk's back, his powerful jaws clamping down on its exposed throat. The Basilisk thrashed violently, but Rekkan held firm, his claws digging into the creature's armored hide.
Clay moved swiftly, driving his blade into the unarmored section beneath the Basilisk's jaw. The beast let out a final, ear-splitting roar before collapsing to the ground with a heavy thud.
Silence fell over the jungle, broken only by the ragged breathing of man and beast.
Clay pulled his blade free, wiping the blood on a nearby leaf. He glanced at Rekkan, who stood proudly atop the fallen predator, his chest heaving with exertion.
"Good job, buddy," Clay said, a tired smile tugging at his lips. "We make a pretty good team."
Rekkan huffed in agreement, leaping down from the Basilisk's corpse.
A familiar glow appeared before Clay's eyes.
[Victory Achieved: High-Tier Alpha Predator Defeated]
[Skill Proficiency Increased: Domination]
[New Achievement Unlocked: Beast Conqueror]
Clay exhaled slowly, the tension draining from his body. He had survived another deadly encounter, but he knew this was only the beginning. The jungle was vast and unforgiving, and more dangers lurked beyond the trees.
But with Rekkan by his side and his growing mastery of skills, Clay felt a spark of hope. He wasn't just surviving—he was becoming stronger.
And one day, he would be ready for whatever this world had in store.
"Come on, Rekkan," Clay said, sheathing his blade. "Let's see what other challenges are waiting for us."
With the jungle quiet once more, the two companions disappeared into the shadows, ready to face the next chapter of their journey.
