Book 6: Chapter 33: Recruit
Facing Lilith's puzzled gaze, the Imperial Consort Jadeite showed no sign of embarrassment.
Instead, after noticing Lilith's refusal to eat the food she had so eagerly offered, she sighed softly and set down her chopsticks.
"I see, you're the type who puts profit above all else, aren't you? It seems I can't win you over by humbling myself."
Lilith was even more confused at this point.
Before she could respond to the Imperial Consort Jadeite's bizarre assumptions, the woman clapped her hands again. From the inner chamber, a row of palace maids emerged, each carrying a tray covered with red cloth.
Lilith's gaze flickered over the procession, and even before the reveal, she had a pretty good idea of what was beneath those clothes.
Is this old hag going…
"Estelle, lift the covers." Imperial Consort Jadeite casually took a sip of her tea after issuing the order.
Princess Estelle's expression darkened slightly, revealing clear reluctance. But under her mother's gaze, she sighed quietly and stepped forward to unveil the first tray.
"Tempting, no?" Imperial Consort Jadeite smiled smugly, her vermilion lips curving in satisfaction.
"Ten pounds of gold bars—roughly a thousand gold coins. That's more than enough for an ordinary person to live in luxury for the rest of their life," she added. Her tone turned seductive as she asked, "So? Are you swayed?"
Lilith was speechless.
Swayed…? I got ninety-nine problems but gold ain't one. If you think a mere thousand gold coins is a grand offer, maybe I should be generous and give you a glimpse of real wealth—starting with my own treasure vault.
That said, Lilith doubted Imperial Consort Jadeite—someone who had so tackily decorated her palace just to flaunt her riches—was truly that ignorant. More likely… she was just looking down on her.
Seeing Lilith's lack of reaction, Imperial Consort Jadeite subtly clicked her tongue in mild annoyance. Of course, that didn't escape Lilith's ears.
"Present the second one."
At her command, the red cloth of the next tray was removed, revealing… A pair of jade scepters.
"What about these? This pair of jade scepters are worth several thousand gold. A rare treasure, even in my palace," Imperial Consort Jadeite explained.
Lilith remained silent, but she was certain the words "Just that?" were practically written across her face.
"Present the third one!" Imperial Consort Jadeite, clearly growing frustrated, smacked the table.
The red cloth was lifted, revealing a sky-blue gemstone, its color strikingly similar to Lilith's eyes. Just as she thought she had finally found something interesting tonight and was about to speak, her eyes caught a barely noticeable blemish on the side of the gem.
Oh, it's scratched… Never mind then.
"The fourth tray!"
A painting.
Not interested.
"The fifth tray!"
An inkstone.
Boring.
"The sixth tray!"
A strange-looking rock.
Ugh… how ugly.
"Last one!"
At this point, Imperial Consort Jadeite's expression had turned even uglier than that dull gray stone. Yet, despite her dwindling patience, she seemed confident about this final offering. She sneered at Lilith and said, "I refuse to believe you'll remain indifferent after seeing this."
"Oh?" Now Lilith was intrigued.
As Princess Estelle removed the last red cloth, Lilith looked at the object on the tray. It was… an invitation card?
Imperial Consort Jadeite personally picked it up and handed it to Lilith, smiling smugly. "Take a good look at it. This isn't something you could buy for ten thousand gold."
"Is that so?" Lilith unfolded the letter curiously, only to discover that it was a… marriage certificate?
She had question marks written all over her face now. For a split second, she wondered if she had been struck by some kind of illusion spell. She rubbed her eyes and confirmed again…
It was indeed a marriage certificate.
Lilith's cheek twitched as she forced herself to read further.
The certificate stated that Imperial Consort Jadeite believed Lilith was a bride made in heaven and, as such, she was more than willing to recommend her… as a concubine into their household.
A concubine on top of that?!
Lilith's gaze flicked straight to the bottom of the certificate. The signature belonged to a duke she had never even met, but his personal seal was already stamped in place. All that was needed was her signature in the final column.
Once that was done, the duke would pick an auspicious day to take her as his concubine.
"Well? You can feel my sincerity, right?" Imperial Consort Jadeite said, smiling as if she had just handed Lilith a golden ticket to paradise.
"All you have to do is sign your name, and you can marry into the duke's family. This is a blessing most people wouldn't even dare to dream of. Though you'll start as a concubine, you're still young. Give it a few years—outlast the current duchess, and eventually take her place. That shouldn't be difficult at all."
She spoke with complete seriousness, as if she were truly laying out a bright and promising path for Lilith.
Lilith didn't respond. Instead, she turned to Princess Estelle and asked, "Is your mother in her right mind?"
Estelle stared at her toes, pretending not to hear her question.
Imperial Consort Jadeite's expression darkened. "I've been so sincere, yet you remain ungrateful! Do you seriously believe Luna—that little brat who just barely managed to restore her reputation—can offer you something like this?" she roared.
"Oh~" Now Lilith understood. So this was what all this nonsense was about.
Imperial Consort Jadeite wasn't simply being 'courteous'—she was trying to poach her from Luna's side.
Did she honestly think that this so-called "sincere offering" would make Lilith fall to her knees and shout "Long live the Imperial Consort"?
At this point, Lilith wasn't sure whether Imperial Consort Jadeite was clever… or just plain stupid. She must have sensed her power slipping away and was now scrambling to recruit Lilith—one of Luna's key figures—hoping to use her to regain influence.
But… were they even playing the same game in the first place?
Imperial Consort Jadeite's understanding of the situation was so limited that the "high position" she believed she held was nothing more than a crumbling tower ready to collapse.
Princess Estelle had likely already realized this, but her mother was still clinging to a dream of power that no longer existed.
"Boring." Lilith casually tore the marriage certificate into pieces. She wasn't even interested in trampling on these insects.
Standing up, she turned to leave.
"Keep your gifts. You might need them in the future. I'm leaving now."
"Stop right there!" Imperial Consort Jadeite slammed the table, her voice sharp as she roared, "Do you think the Jadeite Palace is a place you can come and go as you please?"
Lilith turned back, her gaze calm as she looked at the ignorant woman before her.
"Oh? And what exactly do you plan to do?"
"I…" Jadeite opened her mouth, about to order Lilith's capture. But then she quickly realized that even if she summoned all the palace maids under her command, they wouldn't stand a chance.
Her expression shifted, and instead, she turned to Princess Estelle and snapped, "Estelle, go get your master. Now!"
