Chapter 36: Mummy (2)
After hearing the details and discussing His payment, the two left Zhou Mingrui time to prepare what He needed before they started the operation.
Thus, the skeptical Maric and unsure—but not really having a better choice—Sharron gathered with Zhou Mingrui at the day of the crime—no, operation.
It was the evening at Pritz Harbor, elegant gas street lamps made of black metal illuminating the various streets with the light they emitted.
At this moment, most of the ships had moored. Silence was the main tune of the area.
Three figures were hidden at the top of a warehouse. There was quite a distance between them and the dock where the ship that carried the Tutanssess II mummy was moored at.
Zhou Mingrui then took out the telescope provided by Sharron, and looked at the dock based on the intel.
All the building roofs were occupied by soldiers with steam backpacks and thick-barreled rifles. They patrolled the area and were alert of their surroundings, prepared to shoot at any trespassers who dared come near. Only one warning was to be given.
Apart from them, there were a few exaggerated robot monsters parked around the dock. They were entirely made of metal, and their height had exceeded that of giants. At the top of them, cold machine guns could rotate, and a steam chimney stood erect. The bottoms were grayish-white in color, with many parts exposing rivets, nuts, and gears. They looked rather crude.
In addition, in front of the robots was a very thick cannon. Situated underneath it were two rows of metal wheels with rubber treads.
Close to these steel monsters, above the dock was a dark black metal tower standing at a height of more than ten meters. It had a complicated pulley system that seemed to lack any sophistication. Drooping down were steel cables and a hook.
Seeing all this, the god—who wouldn't have any trouble whatever enemies He was faced with—was wondering how to solve the situation without seeming too strong.
He still harbored the vain hope of keeping a low profile as 'Zhou Mingrui'.
'Would Sequence 3 be enough?'
Zhou Mingrui retracted His gaze and handed the telescope to the approaching Maric so that he could observe the situation.
Before they started taking action, they had come to an agreement. It was to not use Beyonder powers, relying on non-mysticism methods to spy on their target to avoid sounding off any alarms. After all, it was very likely that a demigod was lurking in the dock district.
Putting on a mask, the three waited for a while.
Then, a dull whistle sounded as a ship cruised into the port in the darkness.
A hybrid sailboat with a chimney slowed down as it docked. Meanwhile, two squads of soldiers in red tops and white pants ran over in an orderly fashion with rifles in hand before standing on two sides of a path.
Before long, a gangway was lowered, and people from the ship began alighting.
Another ten plus minutes passed when, situated in the distance, Zhou Mingrui, Sharron, and Maric heard heavy footsteps.
They then witnessed a golden sarcophagus being dragged toward the harbor by a carriage without any horses before a deep voice was heard.
"Possession is prohibited here."
Just as this was said, the carriage which was moving by itself lost its drive. After drawing out two long tracks, it steadily came to a halt.
At the same time, a figure wearing a white robe with golden threads was outlined in midair. He had pale-yellow curled hair, with his eye sockets clearly recessed. His face was thin to the bone.
The Rose School of Thought Indulgence faction was also here!
The member of the Rose School of Thought and the Loen military's demigod then began fighting.
As He saw the situation getting unnecessarily complicated, Zhou Mingrui had to revise the plans in His mind once more.
Would an illusion to hide from their sight work? Teleporting to steal the mummy, or use the abilities of the Error Pathway…
Sharron and Maric left their spots first to attack the big shots while Zhou Mingrui stayed hidden as an element of surprise.
They had decided that He would be the core of this operation.
Swept up in the big shots' fight, the golden sarcophagus that contained Tutanssess II fell to the ground.
A corpse that was bound in yellowish-brown cloth tumbled out. Its surface was covered in a dark red, oily liquid.
Zhou Mingrui chose that time to pull out Azik Eggers' historical projection, signaling the wraith and the living corpse to start attacking.
The Tutanssess II mummy with a slanted golden crown on its head suddenly bounced up, turning its onyx-embedded face towards the only lighthouse in Pritz Harbor.
This Pharaoh, which had been dead for centuries, produced an inhuman cry from its throat. Bound with yellowish-brown bandages, it freed its shriveled leg, strode and ran off.
It seemed to be running towards freedom, but it had forgotten one thing. It was just a corpse. It should be lying down in silence.
Sensing that the wraith and the living corpse were a distraction, the Loen military's demigod noticed the mummy escaping and chased after it.
Upon seeing this, a lady with a crown of thorns raised her right palm and aimed at the mutated mummy.
"All the dead will receive their eternal peace," she said a few words in ancient Hermes.
The Tutanssess II mummy exerted strength in its legs as it leaped up, jumping into another direction, escaping the region that would make it enjoy its eternal rest, doing so in a way that didn't adhere to a zombie's agility.
Further away, a black-haired, golden-eyed man, who was pursuing the member of the Rose School of Thought Indulgence faction, narrowed his eyes as his ring once again emitted a crystalline beam of light.
His figure teleported in front of the mummy as he attempted to stop the deceased from moving away.
However, Tutanssess II changed directions once again, following the Death Consul.
"Execution!"
Finally, the enemies' combined efforts 'killed' the mummy once more, the Death Consul's historical projection having disappeared at some point in time.
At that moment, the Loen military members and Rose School of Thought Indulgence faction finally noticed something was wrong.
Where had the masked wraith and living corpse from earlier gone?
Meanwhile, Zhou Mingrui was escaping, jumping through flames to the location they had agreed on in advance to reunite with Sharron and Maric.
Since the beginning, the real mummy hadn't moved! It had been concealed under an illusion (and Zhou Mingrui had prevented it from running by grafting its converging instincts unto the fake mummy being chased).
Then, Zhou Mingrui, hidden by a divine-level illusion as well, had left His hiding spot and casually left with the mummy.
Although demigods should be able to see through His illusions—if He were an ordinary Beyonder, that is—He had excuses for this as well.
'When the Loen military's demigod moved far enough, the area where the sarcophagus was wasn't in his 'jurisdiction' anymore, so he didn't feel me stealing the mummy I concealed under an illusion… That's a good cover story. Technically, the mummy being chased was also a historical projection instead of an illusion, but they won't know that. The Death Consul didn't fight either, so he didn't display any High-Sequence abilities. As long as I say I got an item letting me create high quality illusions or a blessing of that sort from 'Mr. Fool', they shouldn't think I'm too strong.'
And with the compensation He would get, He now had more money to build a Church and spread His faith.
Zhou Mingrui, who had practically done all the work to steal the mummy, affirmed the excuses to tell Sharron and Maric in His mind.
As for whether Miss Temperance really believed it afterward, that was another matter. It's not like He would see her again as Zhou Mingrui anyway. Erasing her memories worked too.
Maybe He had felt that it was the only and last time He could help this Tarot Club member.

His historical projection reciting the honorific name of the God of Steam and Machinery, the Fool stood in front of the other god's Church.
"I'm here to retrieve a certain mirror of mine. Of course, not for free, I'll exchange it with something of value."
However, since this request came from the previous Lord of Mysteries Himself, it wasn't like the God of Steam and Machinery really had a choice.
Soon, some people came out carrying a mirror.
Long time no see, Arrodes.
