Chapter 379: Chapter 379: Gas Station
"No, absolutely not!"
Hearing the vehement opposition, Chris looked at his wife, who was resolutely against the idea, and felt a headache coming on.
As a couple who had been married for many years, Chris immediately knew from Rose's fierce reaction that no matter what, she would not agree to the priest's request.
"Rose!"
Chris turned around and saw Brother John and Sister Eileen quietly standing beside the priest.
"You know, we really have no other choice."
Hearing this, Rose bit her lip and looked at Sharon, who was again asleep on the bench, covered with a jacket. She obviously understood what Chris meant.
They really had no other options.
They had spent a lot of money, even sold their previous house, and devoted a lot of time, but all these efforts had shown no hope of improving Sharon's condition.
They had sought out famous and capable doctors, whose final advice was to have Sharon undergo psychiatric care.
She would never accept this advice because she believed her daughter was definitely not mentally ill.
From the note given by the priest, she had a strong premonition that Sharon's illness was definitely related to Silent Hill.
But this did not mean she agreed to let Sharon go to Silent Hill with the priest without her parents' accompaniment.
This wasn't a matter of trust, because she was Sharon's mother, she loved Sharon, even though Sharon was not her biological daughter.
"We have no choice." Chris looked at Rose's changing expressions and sighed.
"I think the only step left to cure Sharon's illness is this one. I trust Father York."
Upon hearing this, Rose did not relent, instead she looked towards the priest and his companions deep in thought.
—
"Bishop, are you planning to go alone?" Eileen asked quietly as she looked at the bishop still browsing through a physics book.
At her words, John also turned to look at the bishop.
Both their gazes meant something, and York could only put down the book in his hand, stop flipping through it, and face the two calmly.
"This matter is a bit special, I alone am enough, you two stay here."
Eileen looked at John, and after exchanging a glance, they could only choose to give up.
They both knew the bishop's personality.
"Yes." Eileen and John nodded.
York smiled, turned his head towards a somewhat defiant gaze, and sighed silently.
"Let it be."
"."
—
The sun was bright, the breeze was refreshing, making one feel invigorated as if the whole world had brightened up, bringing the scent of resurrection, hope, and vigor.
This was the weather just before May, the last month of spring.
On the highway to West Virginia, a muscle car sped along the deserted road.
This is America, with few people and vast lands; once you drive towards a remote area, you eventually realize you're the only car left on the road.
This is probably why there are so many highway thriller movies in America. Fortunately, this place is spacious, and there shouldn't be any man-eating ogres like in "Wrong Turn."
Using the 3D map to understand the surroundings, York, sitting in the back seat, glanced at Sharon, who was sleeping on his lap, then continued browsing through his phone.
"Hey, hey, hey! How can you go out without calling me!"
"Ah, ah, ah, ah! Heartless!"
"."
Ignoring the messages from Hannah in the chat box, York clicked on a folder.
Ever since he started hanging out with him, after experiencing volunteer work for a while, he soon returned to his previous life, living day and night upside down.
If he's not manipulating sculptures that can communicate with spirits, or the mysterious toy house, he's back to his job as an information broker. York had given up on him.
Not forcing, not demanding, just as he wouldn't force John to give up the wealth he had earned with his life, instead letting him follow his heart and embrace his life.
The folder opened, revealing the information Hannah had collected for him.
Although he had memories from a past life and was familiar with Silent Hill, this world seemed a bit different, so it was absolutely no problem to review everything again.
Looking at a photo of a small town, York's eyes slightly raised.
This information was not much different from his past life's information about Silent Hill.
Decades ago, a significant event occurred in the town of Silent Hill: a fire ignited the underground coal seams, quickly spreading the fire and engulfing many residents.
The burning produced a large amount of toxic gas, causing the surviving residents to gradually move away from Silent Hill.
What's worse, the coal underground burned slowly and persistently, and the flames are still not extinguished to this day.
So Silent Hill, this town, is now a desolate and haunted place.
Having glanced over the information and confirmed there was no major difference from his past life's memories, York no longer continued to browse
.
But in his mind, he had already linked this information.
What genre is the movie Silent Hill? It's a horror thriller, naturally involving monsters.
Besides those who accidentally entered the church and found that the church could stop Alessa's cult and some surviving residents, basically, everyone in the town of Silent Hill was killed by Alessa.
Death is death, but these people killed by Alessa became her tools.
Alessa forcefully transformed these people's spirits, turning them into various monsters, ensuring they could never reincarnate.
Just thinking of this, York put away his phone and looked at Sharon, who was staring at him with wide eyes, and smiled.
"Awake?"
Sharon blinked and nodded, then sat up.
The movement also caught the attention of the driver in front, and Rose stealthily glanced at the rearview mirror. Throughout the trip, Sharon had been sleeping non-stop, but unlike before, she was sleeping very peacefully without any signs of sleepwalking.
Perhaps it was the presence of the priest that caused this, but regardless, it comforted her a bit.
"Did you dream of anything?" York asked gently.
Sharon continued to shake her head, just looking at the priest beside her, her lips pursed and her tone a bit low.
"Father, is my condition very serious? I've been sleeping a lot lately."
"No, not serious at all." York spoke softly.
"Child, you don't need to worry about the past. No matter how the doctors have judged, obviously, they are all wrong. Do you believe me?"
Sharon stared at the priest without blinking, and finally, a smile broke on her face as she nodded vigorously.
But then she became a bit coy, stealthily glancing at the front seat, and whispered.
"Does that mean I don't have to take medicine?"
She knew her parents listened to the priest.
York laughed: "Of course, child, from now on, you don't need to take any medicine."
Sharon was instantly cheered up and yelled "yay."
Rose's lips curled up slightly, her chest heaving as she withdrew her gaze from the rearview mirror.
Unknowingly, she felt filled with hope; since leaving the church under the calm and composed guidance of the priest, she always felt that Sharon's illness could indeed be cured.
York smiled at Sharon and glanced at the front seat, then picked up one of the many books beside him.
From New York to West Virginia, it was at least several hundred kilometers.
Based on the movie and the information he had gathered, they would probably arrive at Silent Hill by evening.
This time was enough for him to finish these dozen books, and then some.
Nothing more, under the enhancement of life points to his body, his brain had probably become non-human.
Just a glance, and he understood the meaning of this page, the theory behind it, absorbing it all, so naturally, his page-turning speed was very fast.
Sharon, who had just been excited for a while, also took out her tools for passing the time from the side.
Drawing paper and colored pens, she liked to draw.
For a time, the car returned to tranquility, speeding towards its destination at over a hundred kilometers per hour.
—
After an unknown period, the sky began to darken.
The deep front was already unclear, and Rose exhaled lightly. Driving for a while was okay, but driving for a long time was exhausting.
A truck sped by, taking advantage of the moment, she stealthily glanced at the rearview mirror again.
Her daughter had started to sleep again, still resting on the priest's lap, and seemingly too comfortable, Sharon's sleeping face was peaceful and relaxed.
This eased her heart, this peaceful sleeping face was only seen in church.
Still appearing now.
Clearly, the reason why Sharon became like this was the priest.
Continuing to look up, the priest still looked unruffled, but he was holding a piece of drawing paper.
It looked like Sharon's drawing.
"Do you want to take a look?"
Perhaps her gaze was too obvious, the priest suddenly looked up at the rearview mirror and met her eyes.
Rose instinctively avoided it, then shook her head.
"Father York, it looks like there's a gas station ahead, I probably need to refuel, do you want anything to eat?"
"Thank you, I'm not hungry yet." York looked back down at the drawing paper.
The drawing depicted something not like a child's work; it showed a layer of black flames, and amidst the ruins, a girl in a dirty black dress was reaching out to embrace something.
Rose glanced at the rearview mirror again, then nodded and continued to focus on driving.
"This is Alessa's dark incarnation separated from her?" York habitually squinted, his pupils reflecting a scene different from reality.
His gaze seemed to penetrate the endless ruins on the paper, through one after another of steel frames burned by flames, and meet the girl's eyes.
Different from the
girl in the drawing, who was faceless and unrecognizable, the girl in York's eyes started to look like Sharon.
Height, face, there were no differences, the only difference was this Sharon, who opened her arms wearing a dirty black dress, with traces of black lava under her eyes, her hair messy.
She tilted her head just like that and looked at him, then suddenly disappeared, and when she reappeared, she was embracing him.
York raised his eyebrows in surprise, not knowing what this dark incarnation of Alessa meant.
But a burst of white light erupted from his body, yet this dark incarnation, looking just like Sharon, raised her little face to meet his gaze and instead smiled.
Finally, she turned to ash in the bursting light.
"Sigh."
York blinked, his pupils returning to normal, but looking at the girl on the drawing paper, he couldn't help but sigh.
Honestly, he felt sympathy for Alessa, so this time he wouldn't do anything.
Punish? He didn't consider himself qualified, and even if he was, he didn't want to harm this poor child.
In the recent spiritual session, York knew his attitude, probably perceived by Alessa.
"Just teach me how to create a spiritual world, even if it's breaking the church's magic circle for you." York mused to himself.
Creating a world was crucial for his future plans.
Because this could integrate with his future.
After all, humans are said to be made up of atoms and molecules. When he could control and manipulate particles, he might as well try the project of creating life.
Thinking this, York casually placed the drawing paper on top of the book he had finished reading and looked towards the front seat.
Unknowingly, lights appeared ahead.
In his 3D map, the light source ahead was the gas station Rose had mentioned.
And what surprised him was that the good woman from the movie, who followed Rose into Silent Hill and helped look for Sharon, only to be burned to death by the cult hiding in the church, was also there.
"Isn't it just like the parallel world similar to my past life?" York mused to himself.
"Father York, we've reached the gas station, should I buy you a bottle of water?" Rose spoke up at this moment, still wanting to do something for the priest.
"Alright, thank you, Miss Rose." York, noticing this, looked at the rearview mirror and met Rose's eyes, not refusing.
Rose shrugged, smiled, and looked at the gas station appearing ahead, driving the car over.
Although there was no Silent Hill on the map, seemingly erased, it was still a bit away from the location Father York mentioned, so she needed to refuel.
In the darkness, the somewhat remote gas station under the dim lights appeared somewhat ghostly, inherently carrying a terrifying atmosphere.
However, Rose didn't feel much fear, mainly because the priest was there. No matter how special the priest was, his robust figure still gave a sense of security.
Besides that, there was another factor that gave her a sense of security.
A Harley-Davidson motorcycle was parked by the side of the gas station, identifiable as the standard police motorcycle by its markings.
As the car passed, Rose briefly glanced at the motorcycle and then swept her gaze over the gas station.
She didn't see any police around, only noticing an old pickup truck parked beside a fuel tank, with a nondescript but very burly middle-aged man in a regular jacket and jeans standing at the filling port, fueling his pickup truck.
The man seemed surprised as he turned his head to look over.
Rose immediately diverted her gaze, continuing to drive past.
The car slowly entered, her gaze shifting again, revealing a small store inside.
Rose finally saw someone in a police uniform, surprisingly a policewoman, who was chatting with the clerk while holding something.
Despite her surprise, Rose still parked the car steadily at the last fuel tank, right behind the pickup truck.
Through the front window, she saw the man still using the fuel gun to fill his tank, continuously staring this way, his gaze somewhat eerie and strange. Rose pursed her lips, glanced at the rearview mirror.
The priest was nodding at her.
With a heightened sense of security, Rose relaxed and said.
"Father, just wait for me."
York smiled: "Okay."
