Chapter 332: The Mantis And The Bear
"Run!" Dario snapped immediately, his voice sharp.
There was no longer any need to be quiet anymore. Not when there was a monster heading straight for them. There was no point in being silent.
The group bolted as fast as they could, creating an explosion of sound. Almost in sync, they winced as the sound of their footsteps echoed around them, creating more echoes.
The praying mantis screeched, and for a moment, the sound was the only thing that could be heard around the Echo Flats. Then, the sound of its skittering reached their ears.
The insect moved towards them, faster than they were running.
"We just need to get out of the echo zone of the Flats." Dario yelled as they ran. "Then, we can face it without making too much noise."
This was one thing that made the Echo Flats even more dangerous. Even if one encountered a monster they could easily kill, the sound of the battle would end up drawing more monsters to their location.
And that's exactly what happened.
"Fuck!" Dario swore, the sound drowned out by the roar that filled the air. There was an explosion of snow in the distance as a giant bear erupted from the ground, making the mantis look like a kid next to an adult.
"That's just cheating!" Thorn yelled. "A normal bear's already big enough!"
Nobody said anything, focused on getting out of the Flats. They blurred over the snow as the mantis skittered behind them, and the bear ran towards them from the side.
Thankfully, the monsters were still away from them, but they were quickly gaining on them.
The sound of the bear and the mantis kept getting louder, and their own sounds kept decreasing.
"We're getting out!" Dario yelled, a grin on his face as they ran.
Just as when they were getting in, they didn't know exactly when they completely got out of the echo zone, but that was not the thing on their minds. The sounds of the mantis and bear were also reducing as they gained on them.
Dario slid to a stop, turning to face the coming beasts.
"What's going on? Let's get out of here!" Thorn yelled as he skidded to a stop, along with everyone else.
"Trust me." Dario grinned. "You don't want to transverse the terrain of the mountains with two monsters chasing after you."
The mantis was much closer, and it would arrive before the bear.
"What do we do?" Ren asked, taking charge of the conversation. At times like this, it was best to listen to the counsel of the guide. He had much more experience in these situations than the rest of them put together.
"Ren, Lilith and Thorn, you guys take care of the mantis." Dario said. "Nero, Contessa, and I will take care of the bear."
There was no time to even acknowledge the instruction, as the mantis was already upon them.
Lilith's hands blurred, and the mantis' head twitched, her throwing knives skittering over its forehead, sending sparks flying.
"Steelskin." Ren's eyes narrowed.
The mantis surged forward to meet Lilith, who ducked under its foreleg, the razor-like blade on it, shaving a tiny slice of her hair off its end.
As it's second foreleg sliced towards her, Thorn was already before it.
Thorn jumped into the air, winded his bone arm back with all his strength, and punched it in the chest.
The mantis was sent stumbling back on its hind legs, a screech escaping its mouth.
Before it can balance itself, Ren joined the fight. "Push."
Behind them, Dario chuckled as he watched their fight. "Not bad. Not bad at all."
Then, he turned back to face the bear as it roared, surging towards him. "What shall we do about you?"
Nero and Contessa dived to the side as the bear rushed forward, but Dario stood where he was, hand on the rim of his straw hat and a wide grin on his face. "Thanks for giving me the chance to stretch my legs."
The giant bear was already upon him, its white fur gleaming under the light of the sun as its paw descended on Dario.
There was a large crack, and a shockwave passed through the air, blowing snow all around and obscuring the scene. When the snow cleared, Nero and Contessa paused in surprise.
Standing there with a smile on his face was Dario, his right hand up and catching the bear's giant paw like it was nothing. Even the bear had shock in its eyes.
"My turn." He snarled as he pulled back a fist and threw a punch.
There was a low whistle as his fist passed through the air, before landing right on the bear's snout.
The bear was sent flying through the air, bouncing through the snow towards the Echo Flats.
"What are you doing?" Dario asked, snapping Nero and Contessa out of their stupor. "Go bring that son of a bitch back to me."
Without another word, the duo blurred towards the bear.
Fighting the mantis, Ren, Lilith, and Thorn had, of course, noticed the shockwave, and that meant they'd seen Dario's raw power. It showed them just how strong the man was, but more than anything else, it showed them the level of power needed to survive on the mountain range.
And that lit a fire under Ren. If he wanted to get to the Primordial Flame, he couldn't afford to be this weak forever. Not to mention that this was the weakest both Lilith and Thorn had been in some time.
Lilith lost the external use of her Soul Dominion, and Thorn had lost his sword and cloak. This battle was up to him.
"Step back!" He roared as he surged forward, towards the mantis.
Thorn and Lilith leapt back from the beast, making space for him.
He raced towards the monster and when he was a few yards away from it, he jumped into the air, enhancing himself with a Push. he soared through the air until he was right above the mantis, and with a twirl, he pushed both hands down, unleashing half of the stored kinetic energy in his bracers.
The wave of energy roared downwards, enveloping the mantis like a torrent of energy. A loud crack filled the air, creating a shockwave of snow dust.
Ren fell down into the wave of snow with a roar, his fist cocked.
"RAAARRRGGGHHHH!" Just before he landed, he punched.
The snow dust surrounding the mantis instantly disappeared from the air of the punch.
The rock beneath their feet had been shattered like glass, and Ren stood before the decimated body of the mantis, covered in green blood. The steel skin of the monster had been ruptured and flattened from the kinetic energy, and if that hadn't been enough, Ren's final punch had its head to pulp.
Ren had killed the mantis in just two attacks.
Lilith had a slight smile on her face, while Thorn was grinning widely. "Way to go, Ren."
With that done, they turned back to the other battle that was taking place.
Nero stretched his hand, a wave of darkness surging towards the bear. The bear roared, and as if it had been slapped, the darkness bent to the side, missing the bear.
The bear surged forward towards Dario, fury in its every movement. Contessa, who had been in the way, leapt to the side, her hands outstretched before her.
Walls made of light appeared before the bear and it smashed through them as if they were not even there. the walls of light shattered into nothingness and the bear roared, pouncing on Dario.
Dario's hand snapped upwards and he caught the bear's paws, the force of the attack pushing him backwards, his feet digging a small trench in the rocks.
With a snarl, he pushed the bear back. The bear staggered backwards on all fours, but just as it recovered its balance, Dario's fist descended, punching it into the ground.
The bear roared in pain as its head was driven into the floor, sending a shockwave of cracks spiralling from the impact.
Nero descended from above, a giant sword of darkness in his hands. The sword pierced down at the bear's head, descending half an inch in, before it met the skull. The bear shook its head, sending the sword out of its head and into the ground beside it.
It's head snapped upwards at Nero, but a wall of light materialized before it. The bear broke through, but by then, Nero had leapt away.
Before it could do anything, Dario was already before it. The guide grabbed it by the ear, his fist cocked back.
"Did you forget about me?" He grinned, before his fist blurred forward.
There was a loud crack, and the bear's right eye burst apart, its eye socket caving in. It roared in pain, trying to get itself out of the man's grip, but Dario wasn't as accommodating.
He grinned, his fist cocked back for a second punch. "Say hello to the grim reapers for me."
