Chapter 334: The Narrow Road
"In that direction, lies death." Dario said, pointing. "And that's the safest path to the Seventh Peak."
It had been three days since they passed the Whispering Crags, and Ren still shuddered from the memory.
The voices had hounded them every step of the way, trying every possible trick to get them to reveal their every secret. It had felt like being wrung out by a particularly slimy and barbed tongue.
Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on how one looks at it, they were on the final obstruction between themselves and the Seventh Peak.
"So, that's it?" Nero asked, his eyes narrowed as he stared at the thick mist curling around the tiny strip of road that led to their destination. This time, he wasn't wearing his mask, revealing his handsome face.
On both sides of the road leading to the Seventh Peak was a yawning abyss through which the wind howled. No matter how much they peered at the darkness down in the distance, they couldn't see the bottom.
"Yeah." Dario nodded, his expression serious. "I'd hoped we wouldn't see the mist, but it got here before we did."
"So, what makes the mist so dangerous?" Ren asked, his eyes also on the mist.
Just beyond the mist, visible to all of them was the seventh peak. The tip of the mountain stood out, jutting into the sky like it was trying to touch the heavens.
"It's not so much the mist themselves, but the monster creating the mists." Dario said. "If I were alone, I would've taken a nap and waited for it to leave, but you guys wouldn't like that."
"Why not?" Thorn asked with a frown. "We could wait."
"The mists might not leave for at least two months. Are you sure you want to wait?"
The group exchanged a glance. Sitting around for two months wasn't an option.
"What do we have to do?" Ren asked.
"The good news is that we can get through the mist to the other side." Dario said.
"And the bad news?"
"We might have a few casualties."
Ren nodded. "That's a risk we've been taking since we stepped foot on the mountains."
"You don't understand." Dario said calmly. "You guys paid me to guide you, not protect you. And even if I wanted to, I can't protect you from what's in the mist."
Silence filled the air, before Lilith broke it. "What's in the mist?"
"The widow." Dario answered. "It's a spider, but not any type of spider. First, it's as big as a horse. That alone is an aberration for a spider. Second, it's strong. Stronger than the bear I killed."
"And finally, instead of webs of silk, it spins webs of mists. The mists we can see are its web. And the worst part? The mists can create illusions. In short, the widow spins webs of illusion."
"Its prey walk into its mists and never come out, dying before they could detect that they're in an illusion. Fortunately, we're humans. We can detect the illusions, because we see the world in a different way, but just because we can see it doesn't mean we can get out."
"Our only way out is up." Dario said, pointing. "How many of you can fly?"
"We can fly." Nero said. "But I'm not sure they trust us enough to come with us."
Dario turned to Ren.
"He's right." Ren nodded. "We don't trust them enough to go with them. But that doesn't mean we can't fly over on our own."
"Oh. So, you can fly?" Dario asked.
"Kinda." Ren answered.
Dario stared at him for a second, before nodding to himself. "As long as you can get over it, it's none of my business. They'll get me over." He gestured over his shoulder to Nero and Contessa.
"Alright." Ren nodded.
He turned back to his group.
"So, what's the plan?" Thorn asked.
"I toss Lilith over with my strength and my Push first." Ren answered. "With Soul Dominion reinforcing her body, landing on the other side unharmed would be a cakewalk for her."
"And me?"
"You'll hold on to me, and I'll use my Push resonance to fly us over."
Thorn nodded. "Sounds like a plan."
"Let's do this." Lilith nodded, stepping forward.
Ren stepped close to her and bent at the waist, sweeping her off her feet in a princess carry. A large smile blossomed on her face at her new position.
"Stay safe till I get there, okay?" Ren whispered.
She nodded, a blush creeping up her cheeks.
He looked up to see Nero carrying Dario, wings of darkness on his back as they flew over the mists. Contessa flew behind them, standing on a pane of light.
"Here I go." Ren muttered before spinning in a circle, and throwing Lilith as far as he could, Pushing her with his resonance.
She soared through the air, faster than the ex-Chosen were flying. She passed them in the air, the sound of her giggles reaching their ears a few seconds after she passed.
Dario followed her flight, jealousy in his eyes. "If I knew that this was what he meant, I'd have chosen to go with them!"
Thorn whistled, hand shielding his eyes as Lilith dropped past the haze of mist. A second later, a plume of snow rose up into the air.
"She made it." Ren nodded. "Let's go."
Thorn nodded, before turning to Ren, then he paused. "Wait a minute. How would I hold on to you?"
Ren said nothing, a small grin creeping to life on his face.
"No." Thorn whispered as he realized what was about to happen. "Heck no!"
"There's no other way." Ren said, not even bothering to hide his grin.
"Sure there is." Thorn protested. "What if I put my hands over your shoulders?"
"You could slip and fall into the mist." Ren answered.
"What if—"
The two bickered for a few more seconds before Ren cut it off.
"This is the best way, Thorn. Suck it up. I'm not leaving Lilith alone with Nero and Contessa for any longer than I have to."
Thorn stared at Ren before sighing. "Let's get this over with."
Ren grinned as he bent at the waist, sweeping Thorn off his feet with a princess carry.
"Fucking hell." The man swore.
Without any other word, Ren leapt into the air, using Push to enhance his jump. Keeping a constant push below and behind him, he soared through the air with his pseudo flight.
He was at the apex of his flight, his eyes fixed on the other side. Nero and Contessa had arrived with Dario, with Lilith already waiting for them.
He grinned at the sight, when he suddenly jerked in the air. His eyes went wide as he was pulled downwards. Something had wrapped itself around his ankles!
With a yelp, he threw Thorn, using a Push to send him spiraling through the air towards Lilith.
"REN!" Lilith's scream pierced through the air, but it was too late.
Ren looked down to see a web of mist wrapped around his leg. The widow had captured him as he flew above.
"Fuck." He swore, just before he was dragged down into the mist.
