Chapter 337: Before The Seventh Peak
"Alright!" Dario's strong voice filled the air. "Let's get out of here!"
Ren had gotten himself cleaned up and had verified that Lilith was in fact, unharmed. After all he'd done to take the hit meant for her, he'd be pretty pissed if she'd gotten herself injured.
It wasn't as if they could just heal everything around them. But that got Ren thinking. Maybe it was time for him to create a healing enhancement.
He hadn't considered it before because he'd always gotten life threatening injuries healed by the Silent healer.
And after the Silent healer had maneuvered its way out of their contract, things had still been okay. After all, nothing could put a scratch on Lilith, as she had full use of her Soul Dominion at the time.
Back then, Thorn had his cape to block anything, and Elias was just so steady and reliable that it didn't even feel like anything could hurt him.
But hindsight, as they say, was twenty twenty. Besides, they were now deep in the Arondale mountain range, the most dangerous place in the world.
Even though looking at the size of the mountain range, they were still in the fringes, they'd already encountered the Widow, a monster so strong, without Dario, they'd be dead.
But that was for another day. For now, his focus was on the journey.
Thankfully, the rest of the journey was smooth. The Widow was the last obstacle, and after a day, the wind picked up.
It howled softly across the snowy ridge, sharp and cold, yet almost reverent.
They had made it.
The Seventh Peak.
Ren exhaled slowly, the breath steaming in the crisp morning air. Behind him, Lilith stood, her eyes wide, scanning the landscape.
The others, Thorn, Dario, Nero, and Contessa, came to a slow stop just behind them.
The small pagoda stood proudly at the very edge of the summit, its red painted wood weathered but strong, looking like even time couldn't bring it down. A stone path led up to it, half-buried in the snow. It looked out over a sea of clouds.
Above them, the sky was clear and deep blue, and below, the world stretched into misty infinity.
"There it is." Dario said, smiling beneath his straw hat. "The end of your journey."
"It's beautiful." Thorn murmured.
"I remember the time I came here with Lady Nyx." Dario grinned at Thorn. "Beautiful lady. It'll be hard for me to forget all the fun we had right here."
As Dario and Thorn bantered, Ren's eyes were on his fiancee. She stared at the pagoda, stars in her eyes. He could almost see the thoughts churning behind her eyes.
She turned suddenly to him. "Let's get married here."
Everyone turned to look at her.
Ren blinked. "Now?"
She nodded. "Right now. I want this to be the place. We reached the peak. I don't want to wait anymore."
Thorn coughed, nearly swallowing his own breath. "After weeks upon weeks of being on the road, we're finally here. Can we, like, sit for five minutes first?"
"If you try to stop my wedding, I'll gut you." Lilith glared at him murderously like he had suggested murdering her family. He wasn't even sure he'd get this same reaction if he did suggest murdering her family.
"Lilith." Ren spoke, calming her down.
"I know." Lilith grumbled. "No killing Thorn."
"Exactly."
Thorn stared at the two like they were both crazy. "Don't I get a say in this?"
Lilith ignored him, stepping forward. "Dario. Can you officiate the wedding?"
The guide looked amused. "Officiate? Me?"
"You're the most neutral one here." She said. "Besides, I trust you more than them." She jerked her chin toward Nero and Contessa.
Dario chuckled. "Well, I'm flattered. You want something romantic? Or something dramatic? I do both."
"Just say the words and stay out of the way." Lilith replied, folding her arms.
Ren turned to her, watching her cheeks slightly flushed from the wind and the emotion behind her eyes. He smiled. "Alright. Let's do it. On one condition."
"What?" She narrowed her eyes suspiciously.
"Let's rest today. Tomorrow, it'll be our special day. A day just for us."
Her eyes sparkled at the thought of a day just for the two of them. "Alright."

That night, as the others slept, Ren lay awake in his tent, staring at the roof. His heart was thumping slowly but steadily, too loud to ignore.
This was it. The day he gets married to the love of his life.
Then, he got up.
Outside, the moon shone silver over the snowy peak. A small fire crackled low near the camp. Thorn was sitting beside it, roasting something over the flame. He looked up.
"Can't sleep?" Thorn asked.
"I figured we should do something for tomorrow."
Thorn grinned. "I thought you'd never ask."
They walked to the pagoda together. It was simple and aged, but clean. While trying to make as little noise as they could, the two of them began to decorate.
Ren pulled flowers from his spatial pouch, white blossoms that Lilith had collected weeks ago for no reason but because they'd looked beautiful. She wouldn't mind him using it for this.
Thorn arranged the flowers into small garlands, draping them along the beams. They gathered small smooth stones, carving initials into them and placing them along the path.
Ren etched beautiful designs in the snow with a stick, meaningless scribbles that felt sacred in the silence. He looked up at the sky. Hopefully, it won't snow before the wedding and mess up his work.
"You're nervous." Thorn said, not looking up.
Ren was silent.
Thorn smiled. "I get it. She's terrifying."
Ren chuckled. "She is. But that's not why I'm nervous."
"Then why?"
"Because I don't know if I deserve this. Her. The peace."
Thorn stopped, turning toward him incredulously. "You think this is peace?"
Ren raised a brow.
"You're marrying a Soul Dominion war goddess on top of a death mountain after nearly getting your head caved in by a demon spider. If this is peace, I hate to see what war looks like."
Ren laughed. "Fair."
Thorn sat down on the pagoda steps. "You love her, right?"
"With everything I am."
"Then you don't need to deserve her. Just choose her. Every day."
Ren nodded slowly. "That, I can do."
They finished their decorations in quiet, hanging braided rope decorated with even more flowers from the rafters.
They both stepped back and looked at their work.
A red pagoda surrounded by snow, decorated by white flowers, and the sky all around them. It looked like heaven.
"Well, my friend," Thorn smiled, "I wish you all the happiness that exists in the world. You'd need it."
He turned to walk away as the words registered in Ren's mind.
"Wait a minute." He turned to look at Thorn who was already sprinting back to the tent. "Come back here! What do you mean by that?!"
Ren took off after him, with Thorn's laughter echoing behind them.
The next morning, dawn came with a golden blush on the clouds.
The mountain was quiet, the wind soft. The pagoda glowed faintly with the first rays of sunlight. The snow glittered like dusted diamonds across the world.
Lilith stepped out first.
She wore a simple white cloak trimmed with silver, her long hair loose, braided with blue ribbon. Her eyes met Ren's, and she smiled.
Ren stood waiting for her, dark officious attire clean, bracers removed. His hands were bare. He offered one to her.
She took it.
Dario stood at the pagoda steps, surprisingly solemn. He'd braided his own hair back and polished his boots, which was likely the most effort he'd ever put into anything that wasn't a nap.
Nero and Contessa stood at a respectful distance. Even Nero's mask was removed and held in his hands, a gesture of respect and acknowledgment.
Thorn, grinning ear to ear, was off to the side tossing petals like an overenthusiastic flower boy. He had clearly practiced this.
Dario cleared his throat.
"We stand here, at the roof of the world. Two people, two peaks, one path forward."
The wind swirled gently.
"Let this mountain be your witness. Let the sky carry your vow."
Ren turned to Lilith. He took a breath.
"There is no before you. There is only after. If I must burn, let it be by your side. If I must fall, let it be holding your hand."
Lilith stepped closer.
"I will be yours until every star dies. Even after the world forgets us, I will remember. Even if I lose myself, I will find you again."
Dario smiled. "Then by the power of freezing my butt off on this mountain, I pronounce you married."
Ren laughed. Lilith leaned forward and kissed him.
Thorn whooped in the background. "Finally!"
Dario tossed mountain herbs in the air like confetti, laughing like a child being present with candy.
Nero gave a single clap. Contessa nodded once, solemnly.
Lilith rested her forehead against Ren's chest.
"We made it." She whispered.
Ren wrapped his arms around her.
"No." He whispered back. "We're just getting started."
They stood like that for a while, surrounded by clouds, sky, and snow, feeling the warmth of each other despite the cold. And for the first time in a long time, they were at peace with the world.
Above them, the sun broke fully over the peak.
The Seventh Peak bore witness.
And it was enough.
