Extra's POV: My Obsessive Villainous Fiancee Is The Game's Final Boss

Chapter 363: First Contact With The Enemy

The branch creaked slightly beneath them as Ren adjusted his position, crouched with his arms resting on his knees.

A faint wind stirred the leaves around their perch, rustling softly like whispers from below. Far beneath them, the mist covered forest stretched in every direction, deceptively calm.

Ren broke the silence. "This exam was designed to incite conflict. Brutal conflict."

Lilith leaned back against the thick trunk, arms crossed. "Obviously. One prize, too many competitors, and a time limit? It's built to create pressure. And bloodshed."

Thorn nodded, wiping sweat from his brow. "And with only until sundown… we're talking eight hours at best. Shorter days this far up the mountain."

"That's the point." Ren glanced at Thorn. "A compressed window. Everyone knows they can't afford to play it safe. The ones who hesitate will lose."

"But that light pillar thing?" Thorn frowned. "That's the real devil in the details. If you grab a ruby, you're telling everyone where you are. Might as well paint a target on your back."

"That's the point of the lights." Ren said. "And since you need all three fragments to pass, it's not about being fast. It's about surviving long enough to hold them. Or take them."

"Which means," Lilith said quietly, "this forest is going to become a bloodbath."

Thorn gave a low whistle. "Whoever designed this exam isn't just smart. They're definitely a sadist too. But at the same time, I understand."

"This isn't just a test of strength. It's a test of restraint, planning, endurance, and luck." He chuckled. "I'm… impressed."

"Which is why we're not getting involved yet." Ren said, his tone final. "We conserve our energy. Stay in the trees. Watch the movements. Try to map out the locations of the rubies as they get revealed."

"When the chaos is at its peak, maybe halfway through the time limit, when people start getting desperate, that's when we move."

Lilith raised a brow. "You want to wait until the rubies have been claimed and the competition has been reduced, then enter the fray?"

"Exactly." Ren replied. "The first teams to grab fragments will be too focused on running. They'll expose themselves, reveal their tactics. All we have to do is wait a few hours."

"The rubies will have changed hands a few times, and when the conflict is at its peak, when a pillar of light appears, that's our cue."

Thorn leaned back against the bark. "Sit it out until it gets messy… then swoop in and clean up."

"Right now, we're a blank slate." Ren said. "No one knows what we're capable of. We keep it that way. Let the other teams get bloodied."

Lilith nodded slowly. "I like it. It's quiet. Smart. Cruel."

"But we won't be the only ones to have thought of that." Thorn frowned.

"True." Ren smiled. "But it doesn't matter. We don't have to face them either. And that is why we won't just be sitting on our asses."

"What do you mean?" Thorn blinked.

"We'll have to split up for my plan to work." Ren's smile turned into a smirk. "It's going to be so much fun."

Ren leapt from branch to branch, his movements swift and silent.

The wind hissed past his ears as he weaved between trunks and leapt across gaps, closing the distance with fluid grace. The branches stood strong and steady, each one thick enough to hold more than ten times his weight.

But even with that, he moved lightly like they were made of twigs, blurring through in a way that meant he left no trace of his passing.

It had been four hours since they entered the forest. Half the day was gone, and the moment they had been waiting for had finally arrived.

A second pillar of red light had speared into the sky moments ago, a sign that one of the rubies had changed hands. That meant teams were bleeding. Scrambling. Getting desperate.

And that was exactly what Ren had been counting on. He'd sent Thorn and Lilith away on their own missions, ready to join them when he was done with his.

He landed on a thick branch and slowed to a crawl, lowering himself into a crouch as he approached the source of the light.

The mist that hung low in the forest floor was disturbed, scattered from the chaos below. The stench of blood lingered in the air. This content was first released on MV_LEMPYR.

Below him, two teams clashed in a savage melee. Ren recognized one instantly. Thick red hair. Smooth coordination. Each of them wielded their weapons like extensions of their bodies.

Rosefields. One of the two Rosefield teams present in the forest.

He frowned at the sight. Why weren't the two teams working together? Even if only one could pass, wouldn't it increase the chances that it would be one of their two teams if they worked together?

The other team fighting against them was already breaking. Their formation had collapsed, one of their members down, another retreating, bleeding heavily.

Ren narrowed his eyes, watching every movement.

The Rosefield Knights were all enhanced with speed, he could tell by how unnaturally fast they moved. Likely through enchanted boots. Their footwork was fluid, efficient, and terrifying.

But it was their swords that drew Ren's attention.

The first knight wielded a jagged blade. Every time it nicked an enemy, their movement slowed, like their limbs had been dragged through tar. A slowing effect.

The second knight's sword was heavy and wide. He swung it at the slowed opponent, unleashing arcs of air that crushed through the opponent's armor and into his ribs.

Ren frowned at the sight. A sword that shot and radiated cutting force, likely a power meant to bypass defenses through pure impact.

And the last… his sword glowed faintly. A white hot blade, the air around it shimmering from heat. Every swing left smoldering lines in the trees, a power that burned from within. Just like Elias.

Ren watched them finish the battle in unison, cutting down the last remaining member of the opposing team with efficiency.

Then, the wind shifted.

Ren felt it, just a breath too late.

He threw up his arms, activating his bracers just as the branch beneath him exploded.

The blast of force threw him backward, splinters and flame cascading through the air. A shockwave tore through the treetops.

Ren twisted in mid-air, absorbing the blast with a shimmering barrier of kinetic force from his bracers. He landed hard on another branch, crouched low, his eyes peeled for where the attack had come from.

Smoke hung in the air, curling through the leaves. Then it parted, and he saw them.

The second Rosefield team.

Three of them, positioned on branches around him, perfectly triangulated. Armored from head to toe in plated gear.

They were ready.

And Ren was surrounded.
