Chapter 6: Adventurer's GUILD
Zayn adjusted his sword belt as he and the others stepped through the towering double doors of the Adventurer's Guild.
The place was alive with noise — mercenaries boasting about their latest hunts, mages discussing spell compositions over pints of ale, and the occasional crash of a tankard being thrown in the background.
It smelled of sweat, steel, and the faintest whiff of roasted meat, which only served to remind Zayn that breakfast had been a mistake.
At the center of it all was the reception desk, where a half-elf woman with golden hair and pointed ears sat behind a polished counter, scribbling something down.
Her uniform was the typical guild fare, but Zayn couldn't help but notice how it… struggled to contain her assets.
Was it mandatory for receptionists to be this well-endowed? He had half a mind to believe it was a marketing tactic.
As soon as she glanced up and spotted Tobias, her eyes gleamed with excitement.
"Ah! A Hero!" she exclaimed, standing up so quickly that the quill she was holding slipped from her fingers and clattered against the counter.
The surrounding adventurers paused in their conversations to glance their way before returning to their drinks, clearly unimpressed.
Tobias, seemingly used to the attention, adjusted his glasses and nodded. "Yes, I am Tobias, Hero of Knowledge."
The title floated above his head like a digital nameplate, and Zayn still wasn't over the fact that he could see it.
'Why the hell do I have a system? And why does his title sound like he's about to start a podcast?'
The receptionist composed herself and gestured for them to approach the counter. "I didn't expect one of the summoned heroes to register as an adventurer. Though, I suppose it makes sense if you want to grow stronger before facing the forces of the Apocalypse."
Zayn raised an eyebrow. "Forces of the Apocalypse? That's what we're calling them?"
She gave him a polite but unimpressed look. "Would you rather we call them 'the creepy flesh monsters that eat cities'?"
"…Fair point."
The receptionist nodded and continued, "Adventurers take on quests, which usually involve hunting dangerous beasts, protecting merchants, or retrieving rare materials. However, one of the most dangerous aspects of being an adventurer is dealing with dungeon gates."
She gestured toward a massive board on the side of the guild hall, where various notices were pinned.
Some of them were standard bounties, but a large section was dedicated to gate reports.
"Dungeon gates appear sporadically across the continent," she explained. "Each one leads to a dungeon filled with monsters, traps, and valuable resources. These gates radiate magical energy, and the amount they emit determines their rank. The higher the rank, the deadlier the dungeon."
Zayn leaned against the counter. "And to close a dungeon, you have to beat the boss, right?"
"Exactly," she confirmed. "However, the real danger lies in leaving dungeons unattended. If a dungeon gate is left open for too long, the monsters inside start leaking out into the surrounding area. If they're not dealt with, it can lead to complete devastation."
Zayn glanced at Tobias, who seemed deep in thought. "So, we just sign up, take on some quests, kill some monsters, and profit?"
Tobias nodded. "Essentially. And with our status, we should be able to rise through the ranks quickly."
The receptionist smiled and placed several sheets of parchment on the counter. "If you're interested, I can get you registered right now. You'll start at the lowest rank, but as you complete quests and gain experience, you'll move up."
Tobias nodded, and the rest of the party followed suit. As they each wrote their names on the parchment, Zayn hesitated for a moment before signing his own.
This was the first real step toward rewriting his fate in this world.
As soon as the last name was written, the receptionist clapped her hands together.
"Congratulations! You are now officially adventurers!" She pulled out a small stack of metal plates and handed one to each of them. "These are your adventurer badges. They'll serve as your identification and allow you to take quests."
Zayn examined his plate. It was a simple piece of iron with his name etched into it. Not particularly impressive, but it was a start.
The receptionist leaned forward slightly. "Oh, one more thing."
Zayn instinctively straightened up at her tone. "What?"
She smiled sweetly. "Don't die."
"…Thanks?"
She giggled. "No problem. Now, if you're looking for a good first quest, I'd suggest something simple. Maybe clearing out a small goblin nest or escorting a merchant caravan."
Zayn rubbed his chin. "What about a dungeon? Any low-rank gates nearby?"
The receptionist's expression turned serious. "There is one. It appeared just outside the city a few days ago. It's a Rank E, which means it should be manageable for newcomers. However, I'd still recommend caution."
Tobias adjusted his glasses. "We'll take it."
Zayn blinked. "Just like that?"
Tobias nodded. "It's the most efficient way to gain experience and test our abilities."
Zayn sighed and glanced at the rest of the party. The busty nun seemed unsure but willing, the earth mage looked excited, and the axe wielder just grinned.
"Well," Zayn muttered, slipping his adventurer badge into his pocket, "I guess it's time for our first real test."
The receptionist handed them the quest details and waved them off. "Good luck, adventurers. Try not to get yourselves killed on your first day."
