Chapter 129: Chapter 129: Victory
Atop Phantom Lord's mobile fortress, Charles and Jose stood locked in a final confrontation.
Jose knew exactly how much magic power had gone into the blast he'd unleashed just moments before. And precisely because he knew, he understood how inconceivable it was that the boy before him had emerged unscathed.
He was a member of the Ten Wizard Saints—wielding some of the greatest magic power on the continent. Jose was confident that an all-out attack like that could take down even Makarov. And yet this boy had survived it.
As impossible as it seemed, Jose could only reach one conclusion.
This boy—though so young—possessed power on par with the Ten Wizard Saints.
A surge of jealousy consumed Jose. He didn't just envy Charles's talent—he also envied Makarov.
Laxus, Mystogan, Erza, the rapidly rising Flame Dragon Natsu—Fairy Tail was filled with up-and-coming stars whose names now echoed across the kingdom.
And now this unknown boy had appeared, also with power equal to the Saints. Why? Why did all the strongest mages end up joining Makarov's guild?
Jose glared at Charles. The whites of his eyes turned pitch black, and black lightning surged around him.
Even a man like Jose had his pride. Up until now, he had been holding back—after all, his opponent was a kid barely out of his teens. But now he understood: if he didn't get serious, he really would lose.
"You're finally going all out?" Charles said. "Then I'll do the same. Come out, Fahl!"
At his call, Fahl emerged from the magic book at Charles's waist.
"Spirit Fusion: Blazing Flame Dragon King!"
Fahl grew larger as it flew from the book, circling above Charles's head until it had become a colossal, multi-meter-long beast.
With a roar, it dove down and merged into Charles's body.
Dragon horns burst from Charles's forehead. His body glowed with a red elemental aura. His scarf trailed behind him like a battle standard as his magic power erupted—no weaker than Jose's own.
The Magic Council strictly forbade combat between the Ten Wizard Saints for a reason: when Saints clashed, the damage was cataclysmic. Skies could crack, lands could quake—true world-altering forces.
Even the members left behind in Magnolia could see lightning tearing across the sky and feel the trembling of the earth beneath their feet. The very air itself shuddered under the clash of these two powers.
Above Charles and Jose, the fortress roof was split apart by lightning. The two stood exposed beneath the heavens. As the lightning lit the sky, they launched toward each other simultaneously.
Behind Jose, four ghostly wraiths formed from his black-purple magic, shrieking with agony as they lunged at Charles.
Charles raised a hand and grabbed two of them mid-air. Flames burst from his palms, reducing the wraiths to ash.
He kicked another away, then twisted and smashed his elbow into the last, shattering it with raw force.
Without pausing, Charles charged forward, unleashing his breath attack.
"Roar of the Fire Dragon!"
"Death Storm!"
Jose formed a massive black magic circle between his hands, releasing a dark purple beam of energy that clashed with Charles's dragon roar.
The remaining walls, already half destroyed by the earlier lightning, were obliterated by the resulting blast. The top of the Phantom fortress was completely blown away, forming a wide-open platform.
Both were blasted backward by the shockwave, but they quickly regained their footing and locked eyes once more.
Two purple-black magic circles appeared in front of Jose, from which tendrils of magic surged forth.
Charles leapt high into the air, narrowly dodging the lashing tentacles. They slammed into the ground, smashing it apart and sending the floor crashing down.
One tendril, however, twisted midair and wrapped around Charles's ankle, hurling him to the floor with a violent crash.
But when the smoke cleared, Jose couldn't see him.
Something alerted him—he leapt just as the floor exploded upward.
Charles shot out from below in a rising uppercut.
Jose hurled his remaining tendrils at him, but Charles caught both under his arms and, with a roar, tore them apart. The magic shattered, and even the circles that summoned them collapsed.
Still airborne, Jose watched as Charles landed, crouched, and then leapt again, fists blazing.
"Damn you, brat!"
Jose screamed and fired a volley of ghostly arrows.
Charles didn't dodge. Instead, fire erupted from his feet, accelerating him as he smashed through the arrows like a comet.
"Fire Dragon's Iron Fist!"
His punch struck Jose's gut dead-on, folding him into a sideways V.
"Fly… high for me!"
Charles roared, flames blazing brighter across his body. His bulging arm muscles poured every ounce of power into his fist.
Jose coughed up blood as his body launched into the sky, just as Charles had declared.
Charles landed on the scorched platform, watching Jose arc through the air before crashing into the sea with a massive splash.
He exhaled and released his Spirit Fusion and Dragonblood Mode. Fahl emerged from his body and landed gently on his shoulder.
Clenching his fist, Charles confirmed it—he had defeated Jose. Though Jose was not the strongest among the Saints, this proved that Charles had reached their level.
But then he thought of Serena of the West, ranked #1 among the Saints—who could match three others alone. Yet even he had been killed in a single blow by Acnologia.
Charles reminded himself: he was still far from strong enough. If he truly wanted to change the tragic future, he would have to become even more powerful.
"Charles!"
…
The voice snapped him out of his thoughts. He turned to see the others running toward him.
Natsu, Gray, Erza, Lucy, Elfman—every Fairy Tail member who had fought in the war had gathered, not one missing.
They had all won their battles, too.
Charles raised a hand high and declared, "Everyone, the winner of this war… is Fairy Tail!"
"YEAH!"
"That's our Charles—such a man!"
"I knew he wouldn't lose!"
"Charles beat a Wizard Saint—how amazing is that?!"
…
Surrounded by his guildmates, Charles smiled.
This was what he sought with all his strength—to protect everything standing before him now.
