Chapter 34: Chapter 34: The Memory of a Dying Era
[Scene: Fairy Tail – Guild Office]
Makarov's voice was low, yet firm—seasoned by decades of battle and intuition.
Makarov: Escanor, tell me what that black mist was really about."
Escanor (scratching the back of his head): Grandpa, you noticed, huh…"
Makarov (half-laughing): I may be old, but I'm not blind. Erza's blade didn't leave a scratch. That wasn't a Curse Song trick."
Erza and Mira turned to Escanor, eyes filled with quiet tension.
Escanor (sighs): ...This is beyond what mortals are meant to understand."
Makarov (serious): You surpassed mortal limits long ago. We've accepted that. Speak."
Erza & Mira (nodding): We want to know."
With a long exhale, Escanor relented—and told them everything: the truth of Ankhseram, the god of death; the offer to become his agent; and the revelation that Zeref and Acnologia were merely discarded pawns.
Mira (shocked): Unbelievable… even Zeref and Acnologia were being used…"
Erza (eyes narrowing): So Ankhseram's goal is mass slaughter… to become the only god."
Then came the inevitable question—the one even Escanor had been avoiding.
Makarov (calm but firm): You said Ankhseram's method of godhood involves killing. But what about you, Escanor? What path are you walking? And… what about the ancient gods he mentioned?"
Escanor (grimacing): Can't you just… not ask?"
But their silence said enough.
Escanor (sighs): Fine. I'll tell you everything I know."
[Scene: The Truth of the Divine Path]
He told them what Ankhseram had said in the mist—that every god-to-be faces a final step, a trial that ends in death. That none had survived it.
Mira (voice trembling): Then… are you going to…?"
Escanor (softly): No. It's not as hopeless as he claims. I've already stepped onto my path. I can see it, piece by piece. It's difficult, yes. But not impossible."
He stood tall. Radiant.
EEscanor: The only question now is, what happened to the ancient gods? Why did they fall?"
A heavy silence followed. Their worldview had been shattered, reassembled, and then shattered again.
Erza (thoughtfully): Ultear… She might know something. After all, she—"
Mira (soft gasp): That's right. Her origin…"
Escanor (nodding): I planned to contact her anyway."
[Scene: That Night—Separate Paths Home]
They parted ways, but Escanor could feel the lingering weight in their hearts. He turned before leaving.
Escanor: I'll say this once. No matter who or what I face—I won't let anything take you from me."
Erza & Mira (in unison, smiling): We believe in you."
[Scene: The Next Morning – Departure]
After a kiss on both their foreheads, Escanor soared into the sky—his silhouette bathed in morning light.
The destination: a place filled with memory and sorrow—the grave of Ur.
[Scene: Ur's Tomb—A Familiar Presence]
The gravestone stood as silent testimony to love, sacrifice, and time.
A woman in dark clothes stood before it. Her black hair flowed down her back like a waterfall of night. Ultear.
Escanor landed quietly, but she already sensed him.
Escanor (embracing her gently from behind): Missing her again…?"
Ultear (softly): Always."
She leaned her head back, resting it on his chest. Her body was warm. Fragile. Still grieving.
Ultear: There's something I remembered. Something… I'm not sure how to explain."
Escanor (quietly): Then don't explain it alone. We'll face it together—even if it means defying fate itself."
Ultear (smiling softly): You're still unbearably charming, you know that?"
[Scene: Ultear's Revelation]
She turned and gazed up at him, her expression unreadable.
UUltear: After you were swallowed by the black mist, I tried to chase after you. But I was hit by something… inside that fog."
Her voice trembled.
Ultear: It was like… something inside me awakened."
She paused, fingers curling at her side.
Ultear: A memory. No… a past life."
Escanor (blinking): Your what?"
Ultear (resolute): "I once bore the name Time God."
[Scene: The Forgotten Era]
She began to speak of memories not from this world, but another age—older than dragons, older than legends.
An era when magic was natural, and even children held vast power. Where Saint-level mages were common… and dragons were mere beasts.
Ultear (narrating):
"Back then, gods walked the earth. And among the pantheon, three ruled all—the Soul God. The Space God. The Time God."
"I was one of them."
"We each protected a race. Created the foundation of God Slayer Magic—to fight for balance, not destruction."
"But one of us fell out of balance…"
[Scene: The Rise of Ankhseram]
Ultear: Ankhseram. Once the genius Soul God. He rose to godhood in less than a century."
"He was noble at first—building temples, healing the sick, guiding his people…"
"Until one day, he slaughtered them all."
Escanor (coldly): Why?"
Ultear (eyes hardening): No one knows. Maybe he snapped. Maybe he saw something he wasn't supposed to."
"But when the world turned to him for answers—he vanished."
[Scene: The End of an Age]
UUltear: That's when the world began to die. One by one, the ancient gods fell… or disappeared."
Escanor (fists clenched): Do you remember how they fell? What stopped them from completing godhood?"
Ultear (looking down): ...I don't know. But I remember fear. Cosmic fear. Something at the edge of godhood that devours all who reach it."
[Scene: Present—Ur's Tomb]
The wind blew gently through the trees. The gravestone stood untouched. Ultear placed her hand on it.
Ultear (softly): I remembered… what it feels like to become something more. But I also remembered the price."
Escanor (gently): I'll pay it. Whatever it takes."
Ultear (turning to him): You might become the last of the new gods, Escanor. The others are gone."
Escanor (eyes blazing): Then I'll be the first to stand… and not fall."
