Fallen hero's second life

Chapter 17: CHAPTER:-17

The war room had long emptied, but Kael remained, standing alone beneath the flickering red glow of the system interface.

[PROJECT MIRRORFALL - ACTIVE]

[Target: Kael Veyron – Status: Observation / Containment]

They called it observation. He called it the first step toward execution.

Kael's gaze was unreadable. Calm. Cold. Calculating.

"They're scared of you," Zeid had told him before vanishing again into the shadows.

"But not for what you've done. For what they remember you can do."

Behind him, footsteps approached. Familiar ones — measured, deliberate.

"Did they really flag you?" Lyra asked, tossing him a thin scroll.

He caught it and unrolled the contents.

It was a covert directive: a mission classified above Command rank, with his name stamped on it.

[Mission Deployment: Southridge Cathedral Vault]

[Priority: Omega]

[Operator(s): Kael Veyron, Lyra Vex]

[Objective: Secure Memory Vault 119 – Prototype Clone Storage]

Lyra folded her arms. "Guess they're sending the problem to clean up the bigger one."

Kael's eyes narrowed at the mission tag.

119.

That number echoed inside him.

I've seen that number before… in the mirror, when I died.

Southridge Cathedral – Outer Perimeter

Twilight clung to the ruined cathedral like a second skin. Vines coiled around shattered archways. Once-holy bells lay cracked and rusting in the grass.

"It's dead," Lyra murmured, drawing her blade as they entered.

"No," Kael said. "It's dreaming."

Static clung to the air like smoke. The inside of the cathedral was quiet — too quiet. Not just silence, but the absence of memory.

The stained glass windows didn't reflect light. The altar pulsed faintly with forgotten energy. And beneath it, a circle of runes glowed with ancient crimson light.

Kael walked to the center.

You've been here before, a voice whispered inside him.

He knelt and placed his palm on the stone.

The altar cracked open.

[SYSTEM ALERT: MEMORY SEAL RECOGNIZED]

Access Granted – Subject Kael Veyron

Descending to Vault 119

A spiral staircase revealed itself, stretching down into blackness.

"Vault 119," Lyra said, reading the symbols carved into the walls. "What do you think's down there?"

Kael stared into the void below.

"My shadow," he replied, and began the descent.

World Note: Vaults

System Vaults are underground relic bunkers storing forbidden weapons, failed system fragments, or corrupted trait copies. Each vault is tied to the emotional residue of its creator. Vault 119 is unique — it was built from Kael's lost timeline.

Vault 119 – First Chamber

The hallway pulsed faint green. The walls were covered in runes Kael couldn't read — but his body remembered them.

With each step, pressure built in his skull. Visions flickered in and out.

Blood.

Fire.

A sword through a friend's back.

And his own face… smiling with no remorse.

He staggered, gripping the wall.

Lyra grabbed his shoulder. "Kael—"

"I'm fine," he muttered, forcing himself upright. "This place is just... full of echoes."

At the end of the hallway, a vault door stood sealed with six crimson sigils. But as Kael approached, they lit up one by one.

The door unlocked itself.

Inside, the room was massive.

Hundreds of weapons floated in stasis: swords, gauntlets, relic-bound artifacts — each tagged with a date and an operator ID.

These are from the war, Kael realized. All from the other me.

One relic caught his eye — a curved, blackened spear pulsing with ashfire.

[Relic: Echoflame Spear]

Owner: Kael.119 – Warlord Class – Sync Level: 94%

Before he could reach for it, a voice echoed behind him.

"Took you long enough."

Kael turned.

There, standing between two floating relics, was himself.

But… not quite.

The same face. The same eyes. But the energy was different — colder, darker, refined by cruelty.

He wore the Warlord's black armor, trimmed with red veined crystal. His hands were ungloved. His stare was absolute.

"I'm what you were supposed to become," he said. "What they built when you hesitated."

SYSTEM WARNING

Subject: Kael.119 [CLONE]

Status: Active

Sync Rate: 94%

Directive: Assimilate or Eliminate Original

Kael's grip tightened.

Lyra stepped in front, blade drawn. "Another clone? Another trap?"

"No," Kael.119 said calmly. "Not another. The first."

"You're the Mirrorfall weapon," Kael muttered.

"I was the failsafe. If you died or defected — I would replace you."

The clone paced slowly.

"But then you didn't just die. You rebooted the system. You started rewriting memory paths. You changed your fate."

His eyes narrowed.

"And now you're a threat to me."

The temperature dropped.

Kael's aura surged — dark-blue threads of memory wrapping around his blade. Lyra mirrored him, frost building at her fingertips.

"He knows your moves," Lyra said. "Because they're his."

"Doesn't matter," Kael replied. "I didn't come back to relive my mistakes."

The clone raised his hand. The Echoflame Spear flew to him and ignited in his grip.

"Let's test that theory."

[COMBAT INITIATED: Kael Veyron vs Kael.119]

Trait Clash Risk: 89%

Memory Fragment Surge: 30%

Environmental Buff: Vault Pulse (Active)

Sync Link Detected: Kael + Lyra → Unstable Trait: SHATTER PULSE (Locked)

The clone struck first.

Kael barely dodged — the spear carving a line of fire through the air. Sparks flew as they clashed, metal screaming against magic.

Lyra dashed in behind Kael, launching a frost spike — but the clone deflected it mid-spin, using Kael's own defensive counter.

"Predictable," Kael.119 smirked.

Kael gritted his teeth.

Every movement the clone made — Kael recognized it. He had used these tactics in the Warlord campaigns. Perfect counters. Zero hesitation.

But something was different.

He's not adapting. He's repeating.

Kael feinted, dropped low, and swept the leg — a move the clone didn't see coming. The impact cracked the floor.

"Ah," the clone said as he hit the ground. "There it is."

He backflipped upright, smiling now.

"You're improvising. That's not protocol."

Kael stepped forward, blade dripping with shadow.

"I'm not protocol anymore."

The floor lit up suddenly — the relics in stasis pulsing wildly.

One in particular glowed with both Kael and Lyra's energy.

A pair of dual bracers.

[LINK RELIC DETECTED]

Trait Resonance: Kael Veyron + Lyra Vex

Unlock Condition: High-Stress Sync or Fatal Trigger

Kael glanced at Lyra.

She nodded once. "Then let's push him to his limit."

Clones may remember. But Kael?

He remembers, adapts, and evolves.

To be continued in Chapter 18...

"Twin Shadows, One Crown" — Kael and Lyra awaken their first Sync Link Trait. But will it be enough to overcome the perfect version of Kael that never broke?
