Chapter 12: Ch.11: Mutations
It didnt take me long to draw a conclusion on what the Infected Blood Pack item was.
The original mysterious serum was made by Jack Cabot using the blood of his father Lorenzo.
So it stood to reason that I needed a blood pack from Lorenzo.
The recipe also needed a Pure Cobalt Flux. Luckily I had three of those on display in the storage area. This was a blessing because it is a material that would be extremely difficult for me to make.
It required a certain type of radioactive flora that can be only found after a nuke drops. It also required several materials gathered from radioactive enemies that spawn.
Needless to say, I was nowhere near ready enough to battle it out in an irradiated arena while trying to pick flowers. If that is even how it works in the real world now.
I would be cooked up like a premium steak and eaten by mirelurks. No thanks!
But the obstacle of acquiring Lorenzo's blood was still a tall order for me right now as well.
'I'll need to get stronger before I can do anything.' I thought as my mind went back toward the mutation serums.
"I could probably make a couple of these."
I began scrolling through them and seeing what I had the materials to make.
I excluded the ones I didnt want to take, like one that would me explode with a burst of radiation or electricity when hit.
The ones I wanted and could make with what I had was a short list but still offered many benefits.
[Healing Factor: Passive regeneration when Well Fed.]
[Speed Demon: Increases movement speed by 25% but increases hunger when moving.]
[Marsupial: Increased strength of the legs allowing higher jumps, increases carry weight by 20, but reduces INT by 1.]
The negatives to these were minuscule compared to the benefits. Healing Factor and Speed Demon both revolved around my appetite which didnt matter at all because I always had access to food. My system shop could convert caps to food anywhere.
The marsupial serum reduced the Intelligence stat by 1. This was actually lower than the game where it decreased by 4 without the relevant perk, so it was a good trade off in my opinion.
I took out the materials for the serums and began the crafting process.
When I was done I had three vials of serums.
I didnt hesitate and popped the cork off the first vial which was the Healing Factor serum.
I put the vial to my lips and then chugged the contents.
"Bleagh! Tastes so gross."
It had a sort of bitter acidy taste like when you lick a battery.
I felt a warmth spread through my body and a tingle up my spine.
I pulled out a knife and ran it along my palm, a short wince on my face appeared but soon turned to astonishment.
The cut on my hand bleed for a second before the flesh started knitting back together. The process took about a minute but there wasnt even a scar left behind.
I then popped the corks for the next two vials and started testing the effects.
With the Speed Demon mutation, I felt my body become lighter and more responsive.
My increased movement speed wasn't limited to just walking or running, my hands and arms also became more dexterous and quick.
The Marsupial mutation was just as incredible as I thought it would be. I felt a burning in my calves and thighs and I could leap into the air several feet higher than I could before.
I nearly hit my head on the ceiling of the utility room on my first jump. The serum made my legs not just stronger but springy.
I had a 6 foot vertical jump now and could easily do acrobatic movements.
The only downside I found was I didnt have the stamina, or AP, to do more than a few jumps before I felt tuckered out.
By the time I had finished testing out my new abilities I had become hungry again.
My stomach gurgled. 'I will need to find a good solution for this. Maybe a food pill or a supplement serum so I can avoid the need to stop mid battle for a snack.'
I chuckled at the thought of cultivating something like a senzu bean in the Fallout world.
'That doesnt sound too farfetched actually... This was Fallout after all. Something that can replace the need to eat or drink probably already existed.'
I opened the shop and scrolled through until I had found something interesting.
It costed only 500 caps a piece and made the user fully fed and hydrated. It also cured infections and diseases and fixed crippled limbs.
The item was called Survival Syringe but I had no interest in buying them individually. Instead I went to the plans section and to find the recipe.
[Recipe: Survival Syringe - 2,000 caps]
It didn't cost much and I still had 13k caps saved up.
I purchased the recipe and learned it. It was cheap to make but I still didn't have the materials to make many of them.
[Survival Syringe: x1 Stimpak, x1 Disease Cure, x1 Purified Water, x1 Mutfruit.]
It was clear it would take time to make a stockpile of them. The reason being I currently didnt have many Mutfruits at the moment.
The Stimpaks and Disease Cures were easy to make but I only had a few of the fruits.
'Looks like I will have to start growing them. I could use the patch of soil in the residential quarters to do that.'
It was a shame I didnt have a hydroponics area of the vault like other vaults would have. I could only plant the Mutfruits I have in a small grassy area in the quarters.
I could buy the mutfruits or the syringes themselves from the shop but I would rather not waste caps if I could avoid it.
With a plan to cultivate crops and make the life saving Survival Syringes set, I moved on to looking through the shop again for anything else that is helpful to me now.
After a few minutes of browsing, I left my utility room and headed back to my suite to change into a comfortable set of workout clothes and then headed to the atrium to do my daily quests.
<><><><><><>
I managed to finish my daily quests. But not without my body nearly giving out.
My current physique is like a squishy noodle. I have a handsome face but that's it. I had excess fat in some places and barely any muscle.
Except my legs. That's only because of the Marsupial mutation.
When I ran around the atrium until the quest for 10km had completed, I felt like I nearly died.
When I did the 100 push up and 100 sit ups I felt like my arms would fall off and my stomach was twisted.
How I managed to hit the speed bag for 10 minutes straight is still a mystery to me.
But it is worth it. I know it is.
Because whatever I face outside this vault will be infinitely more unforgiving.
The pain I feel now will reduce the pain I have to feel later.
Thankfully I had a healing factor. I injected a survival syringe to get well fed and Hydrated again and the mutation did the rest.
My sore muscles and body fatigue disappeared within minutes.
It was too bad I couldnt afford to waste the syringes much or I would use them everyday.
I made my way back to my suite to shower and change before I went to prepare dinner for Savannah and myself.

[A/N: I removed HP and AP from the status. He doesn't have a gamers body and can be killed or worn out just like any other human in this real world so having HP and AP was redundant. Having a higher END basically will just give him a higher rate of recovery and limb, organ and muscle durability. And a higher AGI will provide him more stamina but I'll still call it AP while writing because it is shorter than stamina.]
