Chapter 36: Chapter 36: Waver and Reines
---
[The scene shifts to reveal a young girl with platinum-blonde hair seated regally in a high-backed chair. Opposite her stands Waver Velvet, now older, worn, and mature, bound with his hands behind his back, showing no resistance.]
["So, you're Waver Velvet my brother's disciple."]
[The girl's tone is calm, her gaze piercing. "My brother's death… it's connected to you."]
["Who are you?" Waver asks, frowning in confusion. He clearly doesn't recognize the young girl before him.]
[The girl begins recounting her past, her voice steady but detached.]
[Her name is Reines El-Melloi Archisorte, and she has recently become the de facto head of the El-Melloi family.]
[Following the untimely death of Lord Kayneth Archibald during the Fourth Holy Grail War, the El-Melloi faction was left in disarray. External forces descended, seizing family properties and assets, and numerous branches abandoned the family altogether, leaving behind nothing but a tainted name and an overwhelming amount of debt.]
[In an attempt to preserve what remained of the El-Melloi legacy, the remnants of the faction sought a successor to inherit the family's magic crest. After much effort, they found Reines, only six years old at the time, with a high affinity for the family's magical lineage.]
[To secure her claim, the Archibald family declared Reines as Lord Kayneth's adopted sister through a convoluted legal process. This maneuver ensured that the Archibald bloodline retained its ties to the El-Melloi name, though Reines herself, in defiance, continued to use the surname "Archisorte."]
---
Waver: "So… Reines is the one who inherited the position. No wonder she's acting like a miniature monarch."
The King of Conquerors: "Hahaha! Little Waver, it seems your teacher left behind more complications than you bargained for."
Meanwhile, Kayneth, watching the video from some otherworldly vantage point, remembers the young Reines. Though she came from a minor branch of the family, she had shown a natural aptitude for magecraft. Despite her young age, Reines possessed high-quality magic circuits and was born with a rare Mystic Eye, a prized trait even among magi.
Mystic Eyes are magical abilities imbued into the eyes of some individuals, allowing them to perceive or influence the world in extraordinary ways. There are three types: innate, acquired, and artificial.
Reines was born with her Mystic Eyes, though the cause remains unknown. Some Mystic Eyes, like hers, manifest from birth; others develop through intense experiences or are artificially created through magical procedures. The most famous example of an acquired Mystic Eye is Ryougi Shiki's "Mystic Eyes of Death Perception," which allow her to perceive the concept of "death." Among artificial Mystic Eyes, those crafted by legendary magi like Merlin, Solomon, and the Wise Kings are the most renowned, offering vision into the past, present, and future respectively.
The King of Conquerors: "Your teacher's demise was all but assured in the Holy Grail War… it feels like destiny."
Waver: "Teacher Kayneth died in the Grail War…"
---
The video recounts the brutal details of Kayneth's death, brought about after being struck by Kiritsugu Emiya's Origin Bullet, which destroyed his magic circuits and left him crippled. Faced with such a loss of power and dignity, Kayneth had little reason to return to the Mage's Association. His pride and honor left him no choice but to fight to the bitter end.
Kayneth is haunted by thoughts of what became of his fiancée, Sola-Ui, in his absence. Though he had prepared himself for death, he hoped that Sola-Ui would have returned safely to the Mage's Association, as she had not participated directly in the War.
---
[In the present, Reines confronts Waver.]
["Yes, my teacher's death is indeed linked to me," Waver says solemnly, lowering his gaze. "Had I not stolen his relic, perhaps I would have never entered the Grail War, and he might still be alive today."]
[Reines' eyes narrow, her gaze sharp. "You're awfully honest about it. Do you understand what's awaiting you?"]
["Perhaps it's to pay with my life," Waver replies, a slight tremor in his voice. "I'm prepared for that… but if possible, I would still like to live. There are things I haven't yet fulfilled."]
[Reines' expression shifts, a hint of curiosity in her voice. "Oh? And what would those be?"]
[Waver looks down, his tone becoming heavier. "It's a promise… a promise I made to someone."]
----
The King of Conquerors: "Hah! So my little Waver has learned the weight of loyalty. I'm proud of you!"
Waver: "You're not the one to get sentimental…"
---
[Reines leans back, a mischievous smile tugging at her lips. "Well, in that case, I have a fitting way for you to atone."]
[Her eyes gleam with playful menace as she continues, "From this day forward, you will bear the El-Melloi family's debt. All of it."]
["And as for the family's magical crests and origin seals, I'll only ask that you restore about half of what we lost."]
[Waver doesn't flinch, his answer immediate. "Understood. I accept."]
[Watching the scene unfold, Waver's older self shudders. Reines, with her deceptively innocent smile and keen sense of manipulation, was proving to be far sharper and craftier than she seemed at first glance.]
["One more thing," Reines adds, her tone shifting. She fixes Waver with an intense stare. "Until I come of age and can formally inherit the position, I'll need someone to… stand in as the El-Melloi family's representative."]
[Waver's face blanches, a look of horror dawning on him. "Wait… you don't mean…"]
[Reines' smile turns devilish. "Yes, precisely. Until I'm ready, you will serve as the Lord of El-Melloi."]
[Leaning back, she regards him with a victorious glint in her eye. "Or should I start calling you… 'Dear Onii-chan'?"]
---
Kayneth: "So this is how Waver ended up inheriting my title…"
Tohsaka Tokiomi: "It appears young Reines isn't particularly keen on shouldering the burdens of leadership herself."
Chihiro: "Waver, it seems she outmaneuvered you completely."
T/N: Changed Kenneth to Kayneth
