Fate untold, Fate Retold

Chapter 6: Chapter 6: Fate retold

The sun filtered through the silk curtains of the Adebayo residence, casting a golden hue across the room where Zara stood in a soft blue gown, nerves fluttering in her stomach.

Today wasn't about her.

Or so she thought.

She was dressed for Kene's sister's graduation party—a milestone she'd watched Amaka work tirelessly toward. Zara had come to love Amaka as a younger sister, and nothing thrilled her more than watching her walk proudly in her nursing gown, certificate in hand, with a smile that could melt the hardest stone.

But across town, Kene stood in front of Mr. Adebayo, freshly shaved, well-dressed, heart pounding beneath his crisp white shirt.

"I want to marry your daughter, sir," he said simply, but firmly.

Mr. Adebayo was quiet. He glanced at Kene—not the young, struggling man he once fired—but the man his daughter had chosen. Strong. Humble. Achieving. Kind.

"You've grown, Kene," he said after a pause. "And you've made her happier than I ever could. I'm sorry for everything before. You're welcome into our family."

Kene nodded, heart full. "Thank you, sir."

They clasped hands.

And the plan for the perfect surprise unfolded.

The evening air buzzed with celebration. Amaka's graduation party was in full swing—music, soft lighting, laughter drifting into the Lagos night sky. Friends and family gathered in the beautifully decorated garden space, sipping wine and sharing stories.

Zara blended in, but her presence still stood out. Her soft blue gown hugged her silhouette effortlessly—simple but elegant. Her hair was swept up into a neat bun with soft curls framing her face. Gold earrings caught the light every time she laughed. Yet, despite her beauty, her heart felt strangely restless. She had no idea why.

Kene hadn't spoken much that day. He was polite, helpful—but distant. She assumed it was stress from organizing the party. Still, her eyes searched for his.

Kene, meanwhile, was a storm of emotions beneath his calm exterior. Dressed in a deep navy tuxedo, black loafers polished to a sheen, and his hair perfectly trimmed, he looked like a man who had finally stepped into the life he deserved. His sister's achievement was everything. But tonight, he wanted more.

He wanted forever.

Just after the toast for Amaka's graduation, the lights dimmed slightly. A gentle hush rolled through the crowd as Kene took the microphone.

"Thank you all," he began, his voice smooth, but thick with feeling. "Thank you for celebrating my sister—the strongest woman I know. Amaka, you fought your way through sleepless nights, hunger, and hardship, and today, you stand tall. I'm proud of you."

A wave of clapping and cheers.

"But tonight…" he paused, eyes finding Zara across the room, "…I want to celebrate something else too. Or rather, someone."

Zara blinked.

"I met her on the worst day of her week—and probably mine," Kene continued with a soft smile. "She nearly ran a man over. I thought she was rude. She thought I was beneath her."

Laughter echoed.

"But somehow… life kept pulling us back to each other. And through every conversation, every argument, every quiet moment… I saw her. Not just the daughter of a billionaire. But the woman underneath. Strong. Honest. Broken in the most beautiful ways."

Zara's breath hitched.

"I fell in love without permission. I never meant to. But I'm grateful I did."

He walked to her slowly, microphone in one hand, small black box in the other.

"Zara Adebayo… you're the reason I've become more. You are my peace, my storm, and my home."

He knelt.

"Will you make me the happiest man alive… and marry me?"

Gasps. Then silence.

Zara stood, tears slipping freely. She covered her mouth, then nodded through the flood of emotions.

"Yes," she whispered, then louder—"Yes!"

The crowd exploded in cheers as she rushed into his arms.

He lifted her gently, spinning her once before setting her down. She leaned in, and without hesitation, kissed him—soft, deep, filled with every unsaid word they'd carried for too long.

Pulling back, she whispered against his ear, "It was you. It's always been you. I love you, Kene."

He smiled through his own misty eyes. "I promise you, Zara… I'll never give you a reason to regret this."

Their lips met again—this time slower, deeper. His hand cupped her waist, hers around his neck.

The crowd clapped again, Amaka wiping tears, Mr. Adebayo smiling proudly.

Love had found its way through class, pain, pride, and fate.

And now… *Fate Untold* had become *Fate Retold.*

Forever had finally begun.
