Chapter 27: The Trap Closes
Chapter 0027: The Trap Closes
The gunshot echoed through the warehouse like a thunderclap. Claire dropped to the ground instinctively, heart hammering against her ribs.
"Lucas?!" she called out in the darkness.
"I'm good!" he shouted back, his voice sharp. "That shot wasn't aimed at us—it was a warning."
The dim emergency lights flickered on, casting eerie shadows across the rusted walls. Alexander had his gun drawn, his body tense as he scanned the area. "Someone's here," he muttered.
A slow, deliberate clap echoed from above.
Claire's breath caught as she followed the sound, her gaze snapping to the catwalk above them. A figure emerged from the shadows, dressed in black, a sniper rifle slung across his back.
Sebastian.
And he wasn't alone.
From the surrounding darkness, figures stepped forward—men armed and ready, their expressions unreadable. Claire counted at least ten. The trap had been set long before they arrived.
Sebastian leaned casually against the railing, looking down at them with an amused smirk. "You just don't know when to quit, do you?"
Alexander's jaw tightened. "Let Mark go."
Sebastian tilted his head. "Oh, Alex, always so predictable. You really think I'd just hand over a loose end?" He gestured toward Mark, who was gripping his side, his face pale with exhaustion. "He's already dead weight. But you?" His eyes flickered to Claire. "You're the real prize."
Claire felt the weight of his gaze, but she refused to let fear take hold. "Is that why you left us a message? To lure us here?"
Sebastian's smile widened. "And it worked beautifully."
Lucas shifted slightly, inching toward cover, but Sebastian caught the movement. With a flick of his wrist, one of his men raised a gun and fired a shot—hitting just inches from Lucas' foot.
"Ah, ah, ah," Sebastian chided. "Let's not get reckless. I'd hate for this reunion to be cut short."
Claire's mind raced. There were too many of them to fight head-on. They needed an opening—something to disrupt Sebastian's control over the situation.
Then she saw it.
Above Sebastian, the catwalk extended toward the far side of the warehouse, where old chains and machinery hung loosely from the ceiling. If she could just—
A sudden beeping sound filled the air.
Sebastian's smirk faltered as he turned toward the noise. One of his men pulled out a small device—a detonator.
And it was blinking red.
Lucas grinned. "You're not the only one who sets traps, buddy."
Realization dawned on Sebastian's face just as the explosion rocked the warehouse.
The catwalk trembled. Metal groaned. And then—
The ceiling began to collapse.
Claire didn't hesitate. "RUN!"
Chaos erupted. Dust filled the air as debris rained down, cutting off Sebastian's men from the exits. Alexander grabbed Claire's hand, yanking her toward the emergency door. Lucas had Mark over his shoulder, pushing forward through the haze.
Sebastian's furious shout rang out behind them. "This isn't over!"
Claire didn't look back.
Because she knew—
It had only just begun.
Racing Against Time
The night air hit them like a cold slap as they burst through the emergency exit, lungs burning from the smoke-filled warehouse. The explosion had triggered the fire alarm, and distant sirens wailed through the city streets.
Claire's pulse pounded in her ears as she looked back. Flames flickered behind them, licking at the edges of the crumbling warehouse.
"Keep moving!" Alexander ordered, gripping her hand tightly.
Lucas struggled under Mark's weight, his injured friend barely conscious. "We need a car—now."
"There!" Claire pointed toward a row of abandoned vehicles near the docks.
Alexander didn't hesitate. He rushed toward a black SUV, yanking open the driver's door. "Lucas, get Mark inside!"
As Lucas dragged Mark into the backseat, Claire climbed into the passenger side, heart still hammering. Alexander hotwired the car with expert precision, the engine roaring to life.
Tires screeched as he slammed on the gas, peeling away from the burning warehouse just as Sebastian's men stormed out after them.
Gunfire erupted behind them. Bullets pinged against the metal frame of the SUV.
"Hold on!" Alexander growled, swerving onto the main road.
Claire ducked, gripping the dashboard as another round of bullets shattered the rear windshield. Mark groaned in pain, barely clinging to consciousness.
Lucas twisted in his seat, returning fire with precise shots. "We're not losing them like this!"
Alexander's jaw tightened. "Then we change the game."
He veered sharply, taking a sudden detour down a narrow alley. The SUV barely squeezed through, metal scraping against brick walls.
Sebastian's pursuing cars skidded to a halt, unable to follow.
But it wasn't over.
As they reached the main road again, two black sedans appeared in the distance, blocking their path.
"They're everywhere," Claire breathed.
Alexander didn't slow down.
"Then we go through them."
He floored the gas.
The SUV rocketed forward, straight toward the blockade.
At the last second, Alexander jerked the wheel. The car swerved violently, skidding between the two sedans with mere inches to spare. One of Sebastian's men lunged forward, trying to shoot, but Lucas took him down with a well-placed shot.
"Nice shot!" Claire gasped.
"Don't celebrate yet," Lucas gritted out. "They're still after us."
More cars appeared in the distance, headlights glaring through the night.
Claire's stomach clenched. "They won't stop."
Alexander's grip on the wheel tightened. "Then we don't stop either."
And with that, he accelerated into the unknown.
No Turning Back
The SUV tore through the darkened streets, the roar of the engine echoing against the towering buildings. The night was alive with flashing lights and the distant wail of sirens—police or Sebastian's men, they couldn't tell.
Claire clutched the seatbelt strapped across her chest, her pulse thrumming in her ears. The rearview mirror revealed two black sedans still in pursuit, headlights slicing through the fog.
Alexander's grip on the wheel was tight, knuckles white. "We need to lose them. Now."
Lucas, in the backseat with a barely-conscious Mark, reloaded his gun. "Let me make it easier for you." He rolled down the window and fired two rapid shots. One bullet shattered the front windshield of the pursuing sedan; the driver swerved violently, slamming into the side of a parked truck. The impact sent it spinning, taking out the second car in its wake.
Claire let out a shaky breath. "That won't stop them for long."
"Doesn't have to," Alexander muttered, making a sharp turn onto a side street. "Just long enough."
The SUV barreled through a chain-link fence, tires screeching as they hit the dirt road leading to an old industrial complex. Rusted warehouses loomed like forgotten giants, shadows stretching beneath the glow of flickering streetlights.
Lucas looked back. "I think we lost them."
Claire wasn't so sure. "Sebastian always has more."
Mark stirred, his voice barely a whisper. "They… won't stop… not until—" He coughed, blood staining his lips.
"Shh, you're okay," Claire soothed, pressing a hand to his shoulder.
Alexander pulled the SUV to a halt behind an abandoned warehouse. "We can't stay here."
Lucas was already scanning the area. "We need a new ride."
Claire hesitated, glancing at Alexander. "Where do we go from here?"
He exhaled sharply. "We finish this."
Her stomach twisted at the finality in his voice. "And how do we do that?"
Alexander's eyes darkened. "We take the fight to Sebastian."
Into the Fire
The warehouse smelled of rust and oil, the air thick with dust that clung to every surface. Claire could barely hear herself think over the pounding of her heart.
Alexander had wasted no time after their escape—Lucas had hacked into the security feed of Sebastian's estate, and now the plan was set. There was no turning back.
Mark, still weak from his captivity, sat slumped against the wall, his breaths shallow. "You… you guys don't have to do this."
Claire crouched beside him, taking his trembling hand in hers. "We do. He won't stop unless we stop him."
Lucas leaned over the screen of his tablet, his fingers tapping rapidly. "Sebastian's security detail is lighter than usual. He's probably trying to lure us in."
Alexander's jaw tightened. "Then let's not disappoint him."
Claire watched as he checked his weapons, the look in his eyes colder than she had ever seen before. He had always been calculated, but now? Now, it was personal.
Lucas glanced up. "We need a distraction to get past the main entrance."
Claire took a deep breath. "I'll do it."
Alexander's head snapped toward her. "No."
"Yes," she insisted. "I can get inside without raising suspicion. Sebastian still wants me alive—he won't kill me on sight."
Lucas exhaled. "She has a point."
Alexander didn't like it, but he knew she was right. He took a step closer, his hands gripping her arms. "Be careful."
She nodded. "Always."
With one last look at them, Claire adjusted her coat and walked toward the entrance. The moment she stepped into the lion's den, she felt a shiver crawl up her spine.
Sebastian was waiting.
The game was finally reaching its climax.
