Chapter 4: Whispers in the Dark
Chapter 0004: Whispers in the Dark
The note on Claire's desk haunted her thoughts throughout the day. Every interaction, every glance from colleagues, and every casual conversation suddenly felt like a test.
Who had left her the warning?
And more importantly—who couldn't she trust?
By evening, she found herself in Alexander's private office. The city lights glowed behind him as he leaned against his desk, arms crossed, watching her with those piercing blue eyes that always seemed to read her too easily.
"You're distracted," he noted.
Claire hesitated before pulling the note from her pocket and placing it on his desk. "This was left for me this morning. I don't know who sent it, but someone wanted me to see these files—" She gestured toward the confidential documents.
Alexander picked up the note, his jaw tightening as he read it. When he looked up, his expression had darkened. "Where did you get these files?"
"They were on my desk when I arrived."
Silence.
Alexander slowly exhaled, placing the note down with deliberate care. "You should've brought this to me the moment you saw it."
Claire frowned. "I wanted to understand it first. Someone inside your company thinks there's a traitor."
He stared at her for a long moment, then turned away, running a hand through his hair. "This isn't the first time someone has tried to play games in my business, Claire."
"Then why not find out who it is?"
His lips pressed into a thin line. "I have my ways."
She folded her arms, unimpressed. "And what if those ways aren't working? What if someone close to you is setting you up?"
Alexander turned sharply, his eyes flashing with something dangerous. "And what if that note was meant to manipulate you?"
Claire sucked in a breath.
He stepped closer, voice lowering. "You don't think it's convenient? Someone hands you classified files with a cryptic warning, and you assume they're helping you?"
Her stomach twisted. She had been so caught up in the message that she hadn't stopped to consider its true intention.
"Then what do we do?" she asked, quieter now.
Alexander studied her before reaching for his phone. "We wait. And we watch."
A knock at the door interrupted them. His assistant peeked inside. "Sir, Richard Sterling is here to see you."
Claire stiffened.
Alexander glanced at her before nodding. "Send him in."
As Richard entered, he spared a glance at Claire before facing Alexander. "We need to talk. Alone."
Claire clenched her fists.
Richard's warning replayed in her mind. "You're just another piece on his board."
Maybe it was time to figure out just what kind of game she had stepped into.
The Game Behind the Mask
Claire remained seated as Richard Sterling walked into Alexander's office with the air of a man who believed he belonged anywhere he chose to be. His presence was commanding, but Alexander didn't move from behind his desk, his expression unreadable.
"Claire," Richard said with a polite nod, but there was something calculating in his eyes. "I'd like a moment alone with Alexander."
Alexander's gaze flickered toward Claire, but he didn't ask her to leave. Instead, he leaned back in his chair, fingers tapping against the wooden desk. "Anything you have to say, you can say in front of her."
Richard chuckled, shaking his head. "Still playing your games, I see." He turned to Claire. "Are you sure you know what you've signed up for?"
Claire lifted her chin, refusing to be intimidated. "I think I can handle myself."
Richard smirked. "We'll see about that." He slid a folder onto Alexander's desk. "These numbers don't match up. Your London deal—someone's been manipulating figures, shifting assets. I have reason to believe there's an internal leak."
Claire's breath hitched. The note. The warning.
Alexander didn't flinch. "Do you have a name?"
Richard shook his head. "Not yet. But it's only a matter of time before this blows up in your face." He exhaled. "I'd be careful, Grayson. Not everyone in your circle is who they appear to be."
Alexander met his gaze evenly. "I'm well aware of that."
Richard studied him for a moment, then turned to leave. Just as he reached the door, he glanced back at Claire. "And you—don't let him make you another pawn."
The door shut behind him, leaving a heavy silence.
Claire turned to Alexander, her pulse racing. "Is it true? Do you think there's a leak?"
Alexander's jaw tightened. "I think someone wants me to believe there is."
Claire frowned. "You don't trust Richard?"
"I don't trust anyone."
She swallowed. "Then what now?"
Alexander stood, walking over to her with quiet intensity. He placed his hands on the desk, leaning close. "Now, we play along."
Claire's stomach tightened. "And if this is real? If someone is betraying you?"
His gaze darkened. "Then they'll regret ever trying."
A shiver ran down her spine. She was no longer standing on the sidelines. She was part of the game now.
And she had no choice but to play.
Whispers in the Dark
Claire had never been the type to second-guess her decisions, but as she stepped into the elevator of Grayson Enterprises, a nagging voice in her head kept asking the same question. How deep was she willing to go?
The events of the past few days played on repeat in her mind—Richard's warning, the mysterious note, and now, Alexander's refusal to trust even his own allies. The walls were closing in, and Claire was standing right in the middle of it all.
The elevator doors slid open, revealing the sleek, modern interior of Alexander's penthouse office. The city lights stretched endlessly behind the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a faint glow across the dimly lit room.
Alexander stood near the bar, pouring himself a glass of whiskey. He didn't turn when he spoke. "I assume you have questions."
Claire crossed her arms. "You assume right."
He finally looked at her, his blue eyes sharp. "Ask."
She hesitated before stepping forward. "You said we're playing along. But what does that actually mean? Do you believe Richard, or do you think this is just another power move?"
Alexander took a sip of his drink, considering her words. "Both."
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only answer that matters." He set his glass down. "Richard wants me to believe there's a leak because it benefits him. That doesn't mean he's wrong."
Claire exhaled sharply. "So what do we do?"
A small smirk played at his lips. "We give them exactly what they want."
Her brow furrowed. "And what do they want?"
"To see me vulnerable. To believe I don't know who to trust."
Claire's pulse quickened. "And how does that help us?"
Alexander walked closer, stopping just inches from her. His presence was overwhelming, and yet, she held her ground.
"Because while they're busy underestimating me," he murmured, "I'll be the one setting the trap."
The air between them grew thick with tension. Claire searched his face for any sign of doubt, but there was none. He was confident, controlled, and dangerous.
She swallowed hard. "And what's my role in all of this?"
A flicker of something unreadable passed through his eyes. "You're going to be my greatest weapon, Claire."
Her breath caught. "Weapon?"
He nodded. "They already see you as an outsider. Someone new. Someone who might be easy to manipulate."
Understanding dawned. "You want me to act like I don't trust you."
"Exactly."
A lump formed in her throat. "And if they take the bait?"
Alexander's smirk turned lethal. "Then we'll finally know who our enemies are."
Claire's heart pounded. The stakes were higher than ever, and she was walking straight into the fire.
But there was no turning back now.
She was in.
And she had no choice but to see this through to the end.
