Raiden lay on a high-tech hospital bed in the heart of the hanging Gardens of Babylon's scientific facility, a pristine and advanced center created and managed by Da Vinci herself. Wires and sensors were connected to his body, feeding constant streams of data as Da Vinci examined his vitals. She leaned over, furrowing her brow in concentration.
"Do you feel any pain?" she asked, her eyes flicking between the monitors and his face.
Raiden shook his head. "Once again, no… I feel fine. Just… off, somehow."
"Hmm." Da Vinci moved her hand to his unusual wound, the galaxy-like eye in his chest, and gently pressed against its edge. "Do you feel this?"
"Not really," Raiden replied. "It's like you're just touching my chest, nothing more."
Da Vinci tilted her head, looking puzzled. "It's strange. There's space where the wound is, a void, and yet nothing can pierce it or enter. Your skin's always been resilient, but normally, I'd be able to penetrate with special tools. This, though? Special diamonds? Kryptonite? None of it works. And as I mentioned before, not even magic can touch it."
"Perhaps Raiden himself is meant to understand it, to unlock its meaning," Merlin commented, observing from the sidelines. His eyes held both curiosity and caution as he assessed the wound, its cosmic nature eluding even him.
Raiden sighed, unplugging the wires connected to his body as he pushed himself to a seated position, then stood up. "Look, I think it's time to face it. If neither magic nor science can help, then I'm on my own with this. We have a war to prepare for. What's the situation, Merlin?"
Merlin nodded at his resolve, understanding Raiden's impatience to return to the frontlines. Da Vinci, however, let out a reluctant sigh, her hands lingering over the monitors. The unknown nature of the wound frustrated her; the mystery gnawed at her boundless curiosity. But as a scientist bound to the King's will, she gave a slow, reluctant nod, filing away the unanswered questions for another time.
"Very well," she conceded, though her mind was already racing with ideas for future analysis.
....
The meeting room was packed with Earth's most powerful and influential leaders, all united under a common purpose: defending Earth from the impending threat of Darkseid. Never before had such a diverse assembly gathered—Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons; Arthur, King of Atlantis; Superman, current leader of the Justice League; Nightwing, heading the Young Justice team; the Green Lantern Corps; Sollis, leader of the remnants of New Genesis; and Kori, Queen of Tamaran. Alongside them stood Earth's greatest heroes, all gathered under Raiden's command.
Raiden stood at the forefront, his gaze intense and resolute. "Let's make one thing clear—this battle will reach Earth. Darkseid has the strength and forces to bring it here, and he has no hesitation in sacrificing his legions. To him, his soldiers are mere fodder, demons who have lost all sense of self. They will not relent."
Raiden turned to Sollis. "But Darkseid's forces aren't unknown to us. Sollis, the floor is yours."
Sollis, once known as Lightray of New Genesis, rose to speak. His normally optimistic demeanor had been replaced by a hardened, somber expression. "Darkseid… he's not just cruel. He's something darker, something deeper. For centuries, we held our own against him. Highfather led us, rallying the Council of the Eight. We fought with everything we had. But then, something changed. Over the past two years, his power grew beyond anything we'd ever seen. Even Metron—who knows nearly everything—was at a loss."
Sollis took a deep breath, steadying himself. "On that day, when Darkseid attacked New Genesis, it wasn't just Highfather facing him as usual. All seven of us fought him—Metron remained neutral as always. But Darkseid was faster, stronger, more ruthless than ever before. His aura alone was enough to suffocate the air around him, a dark energy consuming everything it touched. We failed… miserably. Four of us fell: Uggha, Shadow, Highfather himself… and Orion. Darkseid killed his own son without a second thought."
Sollis clenched his fists. "Bekka couldn't take the devastation and defected to the Sinestro Corps. Hyalt stayed to hold together what's left of our people. As for me, I'm here to see Darkseid stopped. Highfather's last words were a command: Never let Darkseid take Earth. So I am here, to make sure his will is done."
A tense silence filled the room. The Green Lanterns shifted, unnerved by Sollis's account, knowing the power and reverence New Genesis commanded yet seeing its downfall so easily.
Raiden broke the silence, his voice strong and unyielding. "I know this is grim news, but do not let it shake you. Darkseid is powerful, but he's still just one target. And he is mine to face alone. If anyone interferes, you'll only hinder me. Our plan is to meet him in space, preferably diverting him to another planet within our solar system. Meanwhile, the rest of you will handle his army."
He glanced at Merlin. "Merlin will give you all a list of his generals, detailing which among you will face which target. Gaia's wardrones will support your efforts, but we can't guarantee they'll be able to fully hold every line. This is why the remaining heroes, those without specific targets, will be assigned to defend key locations on Earth that we expect will come under attack."
Da Vinci nodded from her seat. "With my enhancements, Earth's defenses, powered by the Garden of Avalon, will ensure we're well-prepared. This power surge should weaken Darkseid's forces on our soil."
"Additionally," Raiden continued, "Doctor Fate's new body is nearly complete and will soon be ready for battle. This war is one we will win, but it will require everything we have. Die if you must—our lives mean nothing compared to the lives of the people of Earth."
He surveyed the room, meeting the eyes of each leader and hero in turn. "Now, let us strategize and prepare. We will stand united, and we will prevail. For I am Here"
...
After the meeting concluded, Raiden found a moment of quiet on a nearby balcony, looking out at the endless sky beyond the legendary Hanging Gardens of Babylon. As he stared at the clouds drifting past, he pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and took a drag, seemingly lost in thought.
A familiar voice broke his reverie. "I didn't know the pressures of a king were that tough on the mighty Raiden," it teased. "Since when did they push you into smoking?"
Raiden turned, a smile breaking across his face. "Dick…"
He glanced at the cigarette in his hand. "I don't usually smoke," he admitted, taking another drag. "But I got curious… wanted to see what it feels like. Turns out it's terrible."
Nightwing chuckled, shaking his head. "Well, let's make sure it's your last one. We wouldn't want our king promoting bad habits."
Raiden exhaled, letting the smoke dissipate into the breeze. "Say, Dick… are you nervous?"
Dick tilted his head, a gentle smile lingering as he approached Raiden. "Nervous? Nah, why would I be? The Earth's only facing a galactic tyrant out to destroy it. But we've got you, and you've never let us down before."
Raiden's eyes darkened slightly. "I'm afraid, Dick. What if… this time, I fail? What if everything I've done means nothing in the end?"
Placing a reassuring hand on Raiden's shoulder, Dick looked at him with sincerity. "Honestly? We're all scared. But that's exactly why we trust you. You've changed the world, made it better, no matter the cost. You didn't conquer Earth to rule it—you won our loyalty, our hearts. That's why you're our king. So, stop doubting yourself. Trust in the strength you've already shown, and lead us, like you always have."
Raiden took a last drag before tossing the cigarette over the balcony, the wind carrying it away. "Thanks, Dick. I needed that. And don't worry—I won't be touching this stuff again."
Nightwing gave him a smile. "Good to hear. Oh, and it looks like someone else wants to talk to you. See you around, Raiden."
As Dick disappeared down the corridor, Raiden turned to see another figure approaching. He felt a familiar warmth spread across his face as she stepped into the light.
"Kara… It's good to see you....How have life been on Earth?"
Supergirl smiled, a soft yet resilient look on her face. "Hey. I've been… doing well. I've really enjoyed learning about Earth and meeting everyone here." She hesitated, her gaze lowering.
Raiden moved closer, concern in his eyes. "What is it, Kara? Something on your mind?"
Her voice was quiet. "I just… wanted to thank you. For all of this. And for sparing Kal-El."
Raiden's expression softened. "Kara, I never wanted to kill him. He's… necessary. He's a good man, and the world needs him."
A single tear slipped down Kara's cheek, her smile bittersweet. She hesitated, then took a breath, lifting her eyes to meet his. "There's something else, too. I wanted to spend more time with you, to just… hang out. But now, it feels like maybe it's too late. So, I have a request."
Raiden's heart thudded as he listened.
"If we win… if we make it through this and everything goes back to normal… would you go on a date with me?" She glanced away, her voice barely above a whisper. "If you're okay with that, my king."
Raiden not having the heart to tell her, that he may never return, reached out, gently pulling her into a warm embrace. He pressed a tender kiss to her forehead, his voice soft. "I promise."
