Raiden floated in the skies above the battlefield, the air heavy with the aftermath of destruction. Darkness oozed from his very being, tendrils of shadow swirling around him like a living storm. His crimson eyes glowed faintly against the backdrop of the broken world. Below, the remnants of the Justice League and their allies stared in awe and trepidation.
From the horizon, two figures ascended. Koriand'r and Raven approached swiftly, their expressions a mixture of hope and concern. Kori's golden hair shimmered under the dim sunlight as her eyes locked on Raiden. Her voice rang out, brimming with relief:
"Raiden! YOU'RE ALIVE! We won! We won! We saved the world!"
But beside her, Raven's violet eyes narrowed as her senses probed the aura surrounding Raiden. Her connection to dark energies warned her that something was deeply wrong. She reached out a hand to stop Kori, her voice calm but firm.
"Kori, something's not right," Raven said, her tone laced with suspicion and worry.
Despite her caution, the two of them closed the distance, flying closer to Raiden. His form remained motionless, his head slightly bowed. The swirling shadows around him seemed to pulse in rhythm with a deeper, more sinister force.
"Raiden? Are you all right?" Raven asked softly, trying to reach through the darkness surrounding him.
Deep within Raiden's mind, a voice spoke—a cold, calculating tone echoing through the abyss.
'It seems that he loves these two... Interesting... Quite the interesting thing. Even his dark side refuses to act against them. Fascinating. He didn't hesitate to push away the others, but these two... hmm...'
Kori's voice broke through, her tone frantic now. "Raiden, why aren't you responding? Raiden!" Her face was filled with shock, her bright green eyes wide with desperation.
But Raiden remained silent, his crimson gaze locked on the two women, yet distant, as if gazing through them.
Before any more words could be exchanged, the sound of roaring engines shattered the tense moment. A ship emerged from the clouds, its sleek form familiar and imposing. It was the very ship Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Wonder Girl had used to pursue Steppenwolf. Now, it carried additional passengers.
On the ship's deck stood Wonder Woman, her lasso gleaming faintly at her side. Beside her were Shazam, Green Arrow, and Megan, their expressions grim as they stared at Raiden. Wonder Woman herself crouched near the edge, her posture battle-ready, her voice cutting through the air like steel:
"STAY AWAY FROM HIM! THAT'S NOT OUR RAIDEN!"
Her words struck like a hammer, the accusation heavy with meaning. Kori turned toward the ship, her face a mixture of confusion and defiance, while Raven's expression hardened.
Kori recoiled, her eyes darting between Wonder Woman and Raiden. "What are you talking about?" she demanded. "This is Raiden! He fought with us! He saved us!"
Raven, however, didn't move. Her eyes locked onto Raiden's, and her voice was low, almost trembling. "Diana's right," she said softly. "Something's wrong… This isn't the Raiden we know."
....
Earlier
....
The scorching sun bore down on the vast desert, its golden sands strewn with the wreckage of the battle that had raged moments before. Wonder Woman and Aquaman stood amidst the chaos, their relief palpable as they watched Raiden descend from the sky, Kalki's defeated body crumbling into ash behind him.
"Raiden! You are back!" Diana's voice carried hope and exhaustion. "What happened with Darkseid? Have you defeated him?"
Raiden hovered momentarily before tilting his head to meet their gazes. His expression was unreadable, his crimson eyes glowing faintly.
Aquaman stepped forward, his trident resting against his shoulder. "Raiden? Are you all right, son?" he asked, his voice heavy with concern. "Things have been hectic here... We've lost plenty of great heroes..."
Raiden descended slowly, his boots touching the sand with an eerie silence. He finally spoke, his tone cold and unfamiliar.
"Why should I care? Worthless weaklings lost and died. That has nothing to do with me. The King only needs worthy people to serve him."
Aquaman's face twisted in anger. "What the hell did you say, boy?" he shouted, his grip tightening on his trident.
Wonder Woman raised a hand to calm him, her eyes locked on Raiden. She felt the unease growing in her chest.
Billy Batson, standing nearby, spoke hesitantly. "That's... not something Raiden would say."
"Raiden, are you alright?" Diana asked again, her voice firm yet laced with concern.
Raiden smirked, his expression dark. "Better than ever. I've finally rid myself of that wretched Darkseid. Now, I can create my eternal kingdom. The universe will now bow its head to its rightful king—Raiden Kagawa."
Hearing this, Diana's eyes narrowed. Her instincts screamed that this wasn't the Raiden they knew. "Who are you? Raiden would never say something like that!"
Raiden's laughter echoed, chilling in its resonance. "Hmmm... Is that what you think? The King of Heroes Raiden wouldn't be so cruel as to dominate the world? Is that so?" He spread his arms wide as shadows coiled around him. "Well, you're WRONG! I want it all—eternal rule, endless peace! Isn't that what I desire? And I am its rightful king! Only I can achieve the eternal peace this world deserves. And that's total... total..."
His words faltered as his gaze shifted upward. as if something was distracting him, his confident demeanor cracking for a brief moment.
Aquaman seized the opportunity to step forward. "Boy, what the hell are you talking about? We want peace, but you can't force it on the entire universe! That's tyrannical! You wouldn't be any better than Darkseid!"
Raiden's eyes flared with anger. "SILENCE!"
A wave of dark aura exploded from him, sending Aquaman, Diana, and Billy flying. The impact cracked the earth beneath them as Raiden glared at them with contempt. "How dare you speak to your king like that! I have no need for disloyal subjects."
He raised his hand, summoning a dark, massive chakram wreathed in black flames. "Sudarshan Chakra Yamaraj." The weapon hummed with malevolent energy as he hurled it toward the group. The chakram spun rapidly, unleashing torrents of dark fire that scorched the ground in its wake.
The attack left Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Billy battered and barely clinging to consciousness. Raiden hovered over them, his expression unsatisfied as he prepared to summon another Noble Phantasm.
Suddenly, the ground trembled violently, a deep rumble emanating from the earth. Raiden turned his gaze toward the source of the disturbance. His eyes narrowed as he muttered, "Another of that wretched bastard's minions is still alive. Looks like you mongrels get to live."
He cast one last glare at the fallen heroes. "Next time I see you, I expect you to watch your tones—or I will truly end you all."
With that, Raiden took to the skies, his dark aura trailing behind him as he flew toward the distant tremor's origin, leaving the battered group to process the chilling encounter.
....
In The Present
...
The battlefield was silent but for the heavy breathing of the gathered heroes. Raiden stood before them, his figure wreathed in a dark aura that seemed to sap the very air of warmth. His crimson eyes surveyed the group with cold disdain.
"Didn't I tell you mongrels that I'd kill you if you showed that tone with me again?" His voice was sharp, dripping with malice.
Raiden raised his arm, and from the void, a massive dark gate materialized. A great sword, its surface pulsating with malevolent energy, emerged and was flung toward the ship the heroes had used for their arrival.
"Ig-Alima," he uttered.
The blade sliced the ship cleanly in half with a single strike. The explosion of metal and fire forced the heroes to scatter, barely escaping with their lives. But there was no reprieve. Behind Raiden, hundreds of gates opened, each unleashing a storm of dark swords.
"RAIDEN! STOP!" Kori's voice rang out, desperate and filled with anguish.
Raven quickly conjured a shield of darkness, the ethereal barrier absorbing the brunt of the onslaught. Yet Raiden did not even glance their way. With a flick of his wrist, the gates vanished, only for a single, more ominous blade to materialize in his hand.
"Excalibur Morgan," he intoned coldly.
A beam of dark energy erupted from the tip of the blade, massive and unrelenting as it tore through the battlefield.
"RAIDEN, NO!" Kori screamed again, throwing herself in the beam's path.
The attack seemed to split around her, ignoring her entirely. It tore through Raven's shield as though it were paper, detonating on the ground with a deafening roar. A sphere of dark energy engulfed the heroes, sending them sprawling.
They had been fighting for hours now, and they were already battered and weary. This attack was the final blow, leaving them strewn across the ground, unable to move.
Raiden descended, his eyes fixed on Wonder Woman as she struggled to rise. Without hesitation, he raised his sword, its edge aimed at her heart.
"No... Raiden... please!" Kori cried out as she threw herself between the blade and Diana, her arms outstretched in a futile attempt to protect her friend.
The sword stopped inches from Kori's chest.
"STOP!" Raiden's voice broke through, a desperate, guttural shout.
The blade vanished instantly from his hand, and Raiden froze. For a fleeting moment, shock flashed across his face, quickly replaced by his cold, expressionless demeanor.
....
Deep inside his mind, Raiden was a prisoner, watching the destruction unfold through his own eyes yet powerless to intervene. His fists slammed against an invisible barrier as he screamed.
"STOP! JUST STOP! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!"
Behind him, a voice emerged, cold and hollow, devoid of any semblance of humanity.
"But isn't this you? The true Raiden Kagawa? The one you've kept hidden all along?"
Raiden spun around, fury blazing in his eyes. "Damn you! That's NOT me! You bastard! What the hell is wrong with you? I defeated your avatar! Why are you here? You're breaking the RULES!"
The entity stepped forward, its form a mass of complete darkness vaguely resembling a human. Two faintly glowing eyes and a mouth stood out against its abyssal body. The mouth curled into a cruel, mocking grin.
"Did you defeat me?" the entity sneered. "Or was it I who allowed you to think you did? Rules? Rules don't apply to me, mortal. I existed long before the concept of rules was even a thought."
Its laughter echoed, sharp and grating, like nails against steel.
"Keh keh keh... Imagine! A mortal telling me, the very reason for his existence, to follow the rules. It's laughable! Truly, I'd die of laughter if such a thing were possible."
Raiden's glare remained unbroken. "Shut up! Shut your damn mouth!"
The entity's laughter abruptly ceased, its smile replaced with an icy seriousness.
"So, Raiden Kagawa, here we are. Two paths lie before you. Will you embrace the darkness and spread it with your own hands? Or will you surrender yourself and let me do it for you?"
It leaned closer, its eyes boring into his.
"If it's any consolation, I'll kill your people instantly. They won't even suffer. That's better than you killing them yourself, isn't it? So what's your choice, Raiden Kagawa?"
Raiden's mind was a storm of rage and despair as the darkness loomed ever closer.
