Chapter 29: Learning [1]
"You want to learn about magical energy?" Enkidu asked me as we left the throne room after Siduri brought Gilgamesh's work of the day for him to do.
"That's right," I nodded. "I figured you'd be the best to teach me about it."
Enkidu tilted his head in confusion. "I have nothing against teaching you, but why would you want to learn it? You have no need for it whatsoever."
I shook my head. "I don't wanna USE it, I wanna learn how to FEEL it," I explained to him.
Enkidu nodded with an understanding smile. "Ah, now I understand. I suppose having an ability like that would be valuable," he said before he started walking towards the gates of the castle. "Follow me," I did as he told me and we walked out of the castle and into the city. "Now, as we begin, I believe you should remain in your tree form. It's connection to trees should make learning easier."
"Are trees related to magical energy?" I asked with a raised eyebrow.
Enkidu shook his head with a chuckle. "No, but they are somewhat living beings. Living beings draw magical energy from the world around them. Especially products from the planet such as trees," he explained. "Now, let us start with something very simple. Try sensing the people around us."
I had no idea how to even begin with that. However, if its anything like sensing the nearby elements that I can control, I should do something, right?
I closed my eyes and focusing on the feeling around me. Unsurprisingly, I just felt the plants. I felt a few plants around the city and then the trees that make up the roof of the forest nomad section.
I focused on the idea of feeling them. I didn't particularly know what I was looking for. However, I still came with nothing. "I don't feel anything," I said. "That's not surprising. I told you to do it without telling you how to do it," Enkidu confessed with a hand on his chin.
"Oh, so you were setting me up to fail?" I asked with the most deadpan tone I can muster.
Enkidu chuckled. "Not exactly. I was simply testing if you can achieve something abnormal like you usually do," he explained and I hated how I have no comeback for that. "First, you should get a feel of magical energy itself. I will raise my own and direct it at you, but not to harm you. Just to give you a feel of what it's like."
"Alright, let's do it," I nodded getting ready again. Enkidu narrowed his eyes and they glowed gold for a moment. It wasn't even a few seconds after that when I started feeling something similar to heat coming from him.
It wasn't exactly 'heat' itself. I haven't felt heat once since I got here. But, that's the closest description I can come up with. Like being in safe distance from a furnace without looking at it. You can tell the furnace is there even if you don't see it.
"Did you feel that?" Enkidu asked after he stopped what he was doing and his eyes stopped glowing. "Yeah, it was like... heat? I guess? But I definitely felt it," I nodded.
"Good, now, focus on that exact feeling and try to feel my energy without me raising it," Enkidu instructed and I nodded as I began trying to feel his energy.
Learning new things is fun for me. I still do it to this day. Knowing there's an endless supply of things you can learn has honestly been a blessing.
