Finding you in the crowd

Chapter 19: A Thought They Couldn't ignore

There comes a point in every deep relationship where two people begin to think about the future — not just in dreams or hopes, but in real, practical steps. That time came for Deepika and Manish too.

They had been together for many years — from school days to young adulthood. Through every phase, their bond had only grown stronger. They had faced distance, misunderstandings, family pressures, and even the loneliness of having no close friends left. Still, they stood strong — like two people who quietly held onto each other, no matter what.

Now, another phase was knocking.

The Conversation That Changed Everything

One evening, sitting on their favorite spot near the lake after work, Manish looked at Deepika and said something he'd been thinking about for a long time.

"Deepu," he began gently, "I think it's time we take the next step."

She looked at him, a little confused but calm.

"I've been thinking," he continued. "We've been together so long… and we're not kids anymore. I want us to be more settled — to grow. Maybe we should try moving to another city… get jobs, start living a proper life."

Deepika didn't say anything right away. She understood what he meant. He wasn't just talking about jobs. He was talking about them — about starting a life together. Maybe even living together.

For a moment, the thought excited her. A new city, a new beginning, and waking up every day with the person you love.

It all sounded like a dream — but dreams are tricky when reality stands right next to them.

The Decision That Was Almost Made

In the days that followed, Deepika and Manish talked more seriously about it.

They even started looking at possible cities where job opportunities were better — Ranchi, Jaipur, maybe even Delhi. Manish had some contacts. Deepika could look for work in salons or beauty parlors. It seemed doable.

And slowly, the idea of living together also took space in their conversations.

Not forever, maybe — but for a while. Just until they figured things out, saved some money, and built a foundation for marriage.

They told themselves it wasn't about running away. It was about growing up — together.

Manish was ready. Deepika… almost.

Deepika's Dilemma

But something in Deepika's heart wasn't resting easy.

One night, lying in bed, she stared at the ceiling, her mind heavy.

She thought about her parents — her mother who trusted her, her father who had strict rules but deep love, her younger siblings who looked up to her. She thought about the promises she made to herself. And she thought about society — not in fear, but in responsibility.

She loved Manish. More than anything.

But something inside her whispered,

"Is this the right way? Will this hurt someone who believes in you?"

She began imagining what might happen if her family found out. Her mother might silently cry. Her father might never look her in the eye again. The shame, the judgment, the feeling that she betrayed their faith — it scared her.

Not because she was weak.

But because she was deeply rooted in love and duty — not just toward Manish, but toward her family too.

The Honest Talk

The next day, Deepika met Manish and sat beside him in silence for a while.

Then softly, she said,

"Manish… I thought a lot about what we discussed. And I want it, truly I do. But… I don't think I can go through with it."

He looked at her quietly.

"I know you're ready," she continued. "But my heart says it's not right. Maybe not yet. I'll feel like I'm doing something wrong. Not for us… but for the people who raised me, who trust me."

There was a long pause.

And then Manish gently nodded.

He didn't argue. He didn't push. Because he understood — that love isn't just about being together physically. It's about respecting each other's fears, choices, and pace.

Back to the Present, Together

They dropped the plan.

No new city. No live-in.

Maybe not now. Maybe never.

But what they didn't drop was each other.

Their relationship didn't become weaker — in fact, it grew more mature.

Deepika respected Manish for understanding her choice. Manish respected her even more for thinking beyond the moment.

They still dreamed — of a future home, a small kitchen, a shared routine, a quiet married life — but now with more patience, more strength.

Because some decisions are not about giving up.

They're about waiting for the right time, and doing it the right way.
