Chapter 110 The Circus's Escaped Beast
A hundred meters ahead, I saw numerous heavily armed personnel searching through the forests flanking the mountain slopes.
There was a large crowd gathered, with self-defense team members reminding everyone to stay safe.
Who wouldn't be afraid? Were the tiger and bear vegetarians?
After running a few dozen more meters, a young man suddenly blurted out, "I saw them! I saw them! Those two monkeys still have chains around their necks; they must be the ones that escaped."
Chen Ying quickly went over to take a look, and sure enough, the monkeys had chains around their necks, which they were holding onto.
When the drone neared the monkeys, one of them suddenly lashed out, slapping the drone aside.
"Damn, this monkey has got a Powerful Vajra Palm."
Fortunately, the young man's drone was quite durable, and his quick reflexes allowed him to maneuver the drone to dodge as the monkey lashed out.
Chen Ying patted the shoulders of the young man who was gathered with others looking on with interest.
"Buddy, could you please confirm where those two monkeys are? I'm a veterinarian, I should be able to lend a hand."
The boy operating the drone immediately nodded, "Sure, I'll tell you. Just go past here, over the small hill, at the edge of the pine forest behind. Oh, looks like they're about to leave."
Upon hearing this, Chen Ying resolutely climbed over the highway guardrail, located the self-defense workers, and showed his work ID.
The worker didn't dare make a decision to let him through on his own and had to call his supervisor.
Just then, the young man with the drone suddenly shouted.
"Bro, Veterinarian bro, that monkey's in trouble. Its chain got caught on a tree while it was jumping, and now it's swinging violently from a branch."
Once Chen Ying heard this, he patted the militia member on the shoulder.
"Keep asking for permission, I'll go ahead and check."
He started running, using both hands and feet to cross the dirt mound, and sure enough, three to four hundred meters away on a tree, a monkey was struggling violently.
People had already spotted the monkey and were gathered anxiously below the tree.
The whereabouts of the other monkey were unknown.
Rushing over, Chen Ying yelled upwards, "Stop, stop swinging! When you stop, climb up following the chain. Good boy, don't be afraid; I'm coming to save you."
The man in charge of tracking these escaped animals turned pale and was about to say something when someone next to him pulled his arm and shook their head, signaling him to wait and see.
Chen Ying, having spent years in the mountains and taught intensively by Jinya, was adept at climbing as long as the tree trunks could bear his weight.
Fortunately, this monkey hadn't climbed too high.
Cautiously, Chen Ying sidestepped along the branch, getting closer to the monkey, positioned himself sitting on a limb, lay down, and reached for the chain wrapped around the tree.
The spectators below were so tense, their hearts felt like they would jump out of their throats.
"Good boy, don't be scared. I'm here."
While comforting the monkey, Chen Ying grabbed the chain.
"Good boy, hold tight to the collar and chain around your neck; don't let go. I'm pulling you up."
The monkey wasn't large and wasn't heavy; Chen Ying slowly tightened the chain, lifting the monkey upwards.
The monkey squealed, tears in its eyes, terrified.
With herculean effort, he finally pulled the monkey up.
Chen Ying took off his jacket, wrapped it around the monkey, and hugged it tightly.
The monkey's skinny body shook uncontrollably, nearly audible with the chattering of its teeth.
With the entangled chains proving difficult to untangle, Chen Ying was somewhat worried.
At that moment, the village electrician rushed over to help saw off the branch, enabling Chen Ying to smoothly carry the monkey down the tree using the long ladder.
There was a prepared iron cage under the tree into which the monkey was placed, and the little fellow immediately curled up into a ball in the corner.
Good news arrived—aside from this monkey, another mother bear with its young had also been found with the assistance of circus employees and they secured her in an iron cage.
Up to now, all that remained was one monkey, one tiger, and a male black bear.
On the highway, traffic had resumed smoothly. The drone-operating boy followed Brother Dai's car off the highway at the nearest exit, expressing a desire to help look for the animals.
The child's parents respected his wishes, agreeing to stay another night.
Efforts eventually bore fruit, and after searching for half a day and a night, they finally found the monkey, which had snuck into a local's house to steal food, and a tiger that was eating and sleeping in a chicken coop around five in the morning the next day.
The only animal remaining now was the black bear.
A turn of events came from the tiger, who leisurely entered the iron cage and, before lying down to sleep, exchanged a piece of information for a free-range chicken.
Having studied the map on his phone, Chen Ying pinpointed the water source located between three villages.
The tiger had mentioned that the black bear wanted to take a bath, eat a fish, and then head into the mountains.
The tiger's words were fairly reliable, and more importantly, upon studying the area's topography, the water source indeed seemed to be the most suitable place for black bears.
The only downside was its proximity to humans.
A team armed with tranquilizer guns and tracking dogs formed a semi-circle and headed toward the forest area northeast of the water source.
In the woods, Chen Ying and Brother Dai discovered the black bear's droppings and fresh claw marks on a tree trunk.
After receiving news of the black bear, the local leaders finally relaxed slightly but then watched the progress anxiously, fearing the black bear might suddenly become aggressive and hurt someone.
Walking forward another hundred meters, someone reported they had spotted the black bear.
"It's up a tree by the water, with a fish in its mouth."
Although black bears usually like climbing trees, they generally do not eat there, but this black bear obviously feared something on the ground, prompting it to climb the tree.
The personnel carrying the tranquilizer gun glanced at Chen Ying's team, asking if they should take action now.
"Not yet, has the iron cage been brought over?"
"It's here. It arrived via the waterway, already docked, just waiting for our signal."
Chen Ying skewered some fruit onto long wooden sticks and drizzled them with honey before heading out.
His approach made the black bear pause its fish eating, its ears tensed.
"Come here, there's some delicious sweet honey and fruit."
The black bear's nose twitched, detecting a sweet scent.
It twisted its body nervously, contemplating descending from the tree but then climbed a bit higher in caution.
Chen Ying did not approach too closely but placed the fruit skewer on a nearby rock before stepping back.
He had added some tranquilizer powder to the fruits, a sedative he concocted suitable for animals with a very calming effect, now in its third phase of clinical trials.
Under the tense watch of the humans, the black bear descended from the tree and cautiously approached the fruit, sniffing it for a while before finally grabbing a bamboo stick and biting into it.
Before finishing two fruit skewers, the black bear had already fallen asleep.
Chen Ying and Brother Dai approached and patted it; the black bear moved its paw but did not awake.
"The cage is ready, protective suits on, come help lift it into the cage."
Brother Dai arranged for people to lift the black bear as Chen Ying took the opportunity to conduct a full-body palpation check on it, his gaze intensifying when he reached its gallbladder area.
(The practice of live bear bile extraction had once been prevalent, but now it has mostly been replaced by non-cystic drainage techniques; however, this issue remains a hotly debated topic.)
