Chapter 9: The Pain
She opened her eyes, and yet she was still there.
"It didn't matter what I wished; they were not going to get their happily ever after where they,"
"You bought them time, Miko, a child, something most likely stolen by Narakus's trick, but death is death and the only thing that can cut fate,"
He moved away, and she went to sit back down. "I wonder why you let Miroku and Sango live on your land,"
"I would have to assume it has something to do with you,"
"They name one of their kids after me,"
"I am well aware, she is four,"
Thunder rolled in the background, and a soft knock came on the door; it was a middle-aged-looking woman, but Kagome knew, that everyone here was demominc. "I have come to light more candles,"
"Proceed,"
Kagome watched as she did her job swiftly and left.
"So, are you seeing anyone?" She looked at him, and he raised an eyebrow.
"Sorry, I mean courting,"
Though he did have time on his hands, he wasn't "No,"
She crossed her legs; he watched. "Am I to assume you are unmated?" He asked,
She blushed. "Yes, and not courting anyone,"
"What age are you?" He asked,
"Twenty-one, almost twenty-two,"
"You should have offspring by now,"
Her mouth dropped open "Sesshomaru, in my time, many women dont get married till their early to mid-twenties and they dont have babies till later,"
He seemed rather shocked by that. "I assume human life expectancy has grown, then?"
"Well," She thought about it, "Now that you mention it, yes, most humans live till about 80 or so compared to just 50 in this time,"
"So you are still young,"
She looked at him flat "Yes,"
"You have not aged much," He seemed to be thinking,
"Thank you?"
"I have a theory on that, Miko,"
"Oh?"
"It may be the reason you have returned,"
"Really?"
"Indeed, when this weather passes, we will go see a tree,"
Thunder rolled again, and lighting hit. "A tree?"
"You know him,"
"Bokusenō!"
Kagome forgot all about him; she wondered now if he was still around in her time and, if he was, was he alive or just a tree. "I should have looked for him,"
The wind howled outside, making them both look at the stone window, "It's getting worse," Kagome stated,
"Indeed,"
She sighed again, "Where is Rin," She almost hated to ask,
"Married,"
Kagome looked back at him. "Really?"
"Why do you seem shocked?"
"Human or demon?"
He lifted his chin a bit; she expected him to say demon. "To a human,"
He saw her look,
"You seem disappointed in that fact,"
"I just assume she would marry a demon,"
He did too. But for reasons he didn't know, she married a pretty normal human.
Kagome felt sad, "There was no mention of her either," Of course, Rin died; she was human, and perhaps that's why she married a human; perhaps Rin didn't want another to feel like Sesshomaru had when his mother tossed her in hell to die. Perhaps she felt like a burden on Sesshomaru after he left her with Kaede. Maybe if she saw her again, she would ask.
"Does she live nearby?"
"Indeed, though they are traveling at the moment and won't be back for some time,"
She sighed again. "What if I am stuck here?" Dread filled her, and then something dawned on her, and she looked at him. "The well is supposed to be destroyed tomorrow and filled in!"
Kagome turned to reach to slide the door, but he stopped her by putting his hand over her head and keeping it shut. "Where are you going?"
"I have to go back to the well; I have to keep trying; if it's sealed with me on this side, I will be stuck here!"
Her mother would think nothing of her missing; she did that a lot, after all. She would simply assume Kagome didn't want to be there to watch it. She knew how Kagome felt about it. That she hated the well, she would never expect her to jump down it again.
"Miko, the weather-
"I dont care, Sesshomaru; let me go,"
He slowly removed his hand, and she slid the door open and bolted. He watched her run and then sighed; he knew deep down how this was going to end.
She was back for a reason; she was not aging correctly for a reason, she came back at his moment for a reason, and he knew with almost certainty that no matter how much she tried, she was never going to be able to go back to the time in which she was born.
He wondered at what point she would realize this; perhaps she already did.
He sighed and followed after her.
You could not make out where the rain began, and the tears started. Kagome ran with everything she had in her, and even though it had been a long time, she didn't stop. Her legs burned, her lungs burned, her heart...
She didn't skip a beat as she launched herself over the lips of the well and down into it. She did it over and over and over.
That's how he found her, climbing up and throwing herself back down.
"Miko,"
"You stupid well!" She was soaked, and covered in mud, and her legs and hands were bleeding.
"Miko,"
"No, no, no, no," She did it over and over and over, and for some reason, he just stood there, watching her.
He moved, putting a hand around her waist mid-jump, bringing her back against him. "Kagome,"
"No, please, let me go," She fought against him.
If he had not stopped her, she would have kept going all night till dawn.
Lighting lit up the sky,
"Let me go," She whispered giving up on her fight against him, he had her in a firm grip.
"Not till you accept your fate, Miko," He stated calmly, the rain coming down hard.
She covered her face with her hands. Along time ago, being stuck here would not have made her so sad; she had a reason to stay behind, but now, what was the point?
The only people who loved her, the only family she had, were on the other side.
She cried as the thunder rolled, but the slow and steady rain calmed her, and he held her waist till she could cry no more. Rolling thunder made her slowly look at him.
Lighting lit up the sky again, and gold met green, and she knew just as he did, there was no going back.
"Sesshomaru," He had stayed the whole time, and he was soaking wet.
Suddenly she felt cold and weak, and he caught her and lifted her before she hit the ground.
