From Scrap Mecha to Sci-Fi Heaven

Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Smart Glasses

"Has it started? Hurry, let's go over quickly."

They arrived at the storage area of Paradise Harbor, and from a distance, they could see about twenty to thirty people gathered in front of a warehouse.

According to Xu Xiaotu's introduction, these people were what one would call treasure hunters of warehouses; some made a living from it, while others simply enjoyed the thrill of opening treasure chests.

For example, Xu Xiaotu was clearly one of the latter.

Being hurriedly dragged into the crowd by her, the sounds of intense bidding immediately filled the air.

"Thirteen hundred, is there a higher bid than thirteen hundred?"

"Fourteen hundred, we have a bid of fourteen hundred."

"This gentleman bids fifteen hundred, is there a higher bid?"

In the center of the crowd stood a slightly overweight bald white auctioneer, who didn't seem particularly serious or professional, but his tongue was quick, chattering away about everyone's bids at a speed that made it hard to catch every word.

Yet, it was precisely this rapid pace that created a tense and exciting atmosphere, prompting the surrounding treasure hunters to keep raising their bids.

"This type of warehouse is clearly just a storage for household items, not very interesting. It's best if there's a safe; there's a good chance of finding something valuable."

Xu Xiaotu glanced at the opened warehouse behind the auctioneer, a look of disappointment crossing her face as she quietly shared her insights with Lin Yu.

Lin Yu nodded slightly and asked, "Is the auction process just to open the warehouse for us to see and then bid?"

"Yes, but we can't go inside; we can only look from the outside."

Xu Xiaotu explained, "It's really just a game of luck and insight. We need to estimate the value of what we can see and also gamble on what's hidden from view, then bid at a suitable price to win it."

"Then it seems we're at a disadvantage. Shouldn't we get some binoculars or something?"

Lin Yu glanced at the treasure hunters nearby, many of whom were equipped with goggles, and some even had mechanical eyes implanted.

With the inability to get close, these people used their prosthetic eyes to magnify images and even perform big data analysis; they had a clear advantage.

"Hey, you don't need to worry about that. I'm already prepared. The sixth-generation augmented reality glasses from the Stan Group come with high-definition cameras and various image processing programs, automatically magnifying and focusing, and performing big data analysis for object recognition and valuation."

Xu Xiaotu proudly pulled out a pair of silver-white smart glasses.

The entire frame and legs of the glasses were made of silver-white metal, square and thick, with only the top frame holding two transparent lenses without a bottom frame.

The so-called augmented reality glasses simply synthesize additional images into the wearer's field of vision without affecting normal sight.

The basic principle is simple: there are miniature lenses on the frame, and what the wearer sees through the lenses is actually the image captured and displayed by the lenses.

Since it captures images, it can naturally perform additional image processing, such as adding various effects and virtual objects to the image, or zooming in, enhancing clarity, brightness, contrast, color processing, and so on.

Moreover, combined with image recognition and big data analysis, it can quickly identify objects, count them, and estimate their value.

These features aren't particularly rare here; from large Mechs to small mechanical eyes, basically any device with imaging capabilities will have these auxiliary functions.

Of course, since they are auxiliary functions, they can only serve a supportive role.

After all, they are based on image processing technology, which simply means taking a picture and letting the program analyze and recognize it based on appearance. It cannot guarantee complete accuracy, and it's even harder to determine authenticity; as for valuing collectibles and artworks, that's even more difficult.

"Here, this is for you."

Xu Xiaotu generously handed the smart glasses to Lin Yu.

"What about you?"

Lin Yu didn't take them immediately but looked at Xu Xiaotu.

"Hehe, I definitely have a spare."

Xu Xiaotu rummaged in her pocket and pulled out another identical pair of smart glasses, putting them on her face, then picked up the pair she was about to give to Lin Yu: "Here, let me put this on you."

Saying this, she placed the smart glasses on Lin Yu's face, then carefully examined him for a moment, nodding in satisfaction: "Pretty cool, it really suits you."

Lin Yu glanced around, found a full-length mirror abandoned outside the warehouse, wiped the dust off it, looked in the mirror, and nodded in agreement.

Augmented reality glasses aren't high-end technology here, so to boost sales and stand out, manufacturers naturally put a lot of effort into their appearance.

This thing looks very high-tech, and once worn, it's quite impressive. Plus, he doesn't look bad himself, so he indeed looks quite handsome.

Thanks to the eye-tracking and gravity-sensing interaction technology used, he could operate the smart glasses with normal eye movements, so Lin Yu quickly adapted to using them.

His gaze fell on the warehouse currently being auctioned, and he activated the big data analysis program. Soon, connection lines and floating frames appeared around the items in his field of vision, listing various information.

"Unknown brand plastic chair: online store reference price 20."

"XX brand sofa: online store reference price 1200."

"XXX toilet paper: online store reference price…"

"All brand new prices, and many niche brands are unidentifiable…"

After a brief attempt, Lin Yu realized that this device could only serve as a rough reference, but he wasn't disappointed.

He only needed the zoom function.

After all, he was a Level 4 Mech Engineer and had long been involved in various scrap yards. As long as there were electronic or mechanical items in the warehouse, he could generally make a fairly accurate judgment.

Most importantly, he didn't solely rely on selling directly; he could completely repair various broken devices he found, or even disassemble and reassemble parts to create practical tools, which would always fetch a better price.

Looking at it this way, this place was indeed a good spot for making quick money.

"Congratulations, this warehouse now belongs to this gentleman!"

While Lin Yu and Xu Xiaotu were conversing, the auction for this warehouse quickly came to an end.

The winning bidder eagerly began rummaging for valuable items, while the others followed the auctioneer to another warehouse.

Clatter!

Upon arriving at the new location, the simple rolling shutter door opened, revealing another messy warehouse in front of everyone. All began to observe, some alone, others in small groups whispering.

"There's no safe again."

Xu Xiaotu excitedly used her smart glasses to scan for a moment, and soon her face showed disappointment again.

"So you're just here to open safes, huh?" Lin Yu said helplessly.

He also took a closer look; although most of it was obscured, he could still see a few valuable items in the warehouse, such as several motors piled in a corner, a few alloy plates, and a cutting machine.

On the bright side, these scattered items could easily sell for three to four thousand; if he could get them for under three thousand, it would be a small profit.
