Chapter 1: Just an Average Life
Chapter 1: Just an Average Life
My name is Ethan Cross, and I'm just an average 18-year-old high school student.
Not some prodigy, not some loser—just a regular guy trying to get by.
I have my strengths. Math and computer science? Easy. I can solve equations and write programs without breaking a sweat. But the moment you throw chemistry or physics at me, my brain shuts down. No matter how hard I try, I suck at science. But hey, that's life. Nobody's perfect.
Despite that, I was doing well. Above-average grades, a decent social life, and… a girlfriend.
Yeah, that's right. A girlfriend.
At first, we were just classmates. She struggled with math, so I helped her study. Over time, we got closer, and one thing led to another—we started dating.
It was nice. A normal, wholesome relationship.
…Too wholesome.
In two years of dating, we never even kissed on the lips. Just pecks on the cheek. And the weirdest part? I didn't even feel the urge to push for more. Not because I was scared or insecure—I just respected her.
But respect only gets you so far.
As our final year of high school approached, I decided it was time. Time to take things to the next level.
A "Serious" Conversation
February 13th.
I sat across from my girlfriend at a small café. A cheap one—because I wasn't rich, and she didn't care about fancy places.
We were talking about exams, homework, the usual. But in the back of my mind, I knew I had to bring it up.
So I did.
"Tomorrow's Valentine's Day," I started.
She tilted her head. "Yeah?"
I took a deep breath. "I was thinking… let's go on a real date. Like, a proper one. Let's make it official."
She blinked. "We're already official, Ethan."
"No, I mean…" I hesitated. "Let's take the next step."
For two years, we'd just been best friends who happened to be dating. Holding hands? Sure. Cuddling? Rarely. Kissing? Only on the cheek.
We were 18 now. It was time to stop acting like kids.
Her expression was unreadable. "…Okay."
I was shocked.
I expected resistance, hesitation, something. Instead, she agreed so easily.
It felt too easy.
The Text That Changed Everything
February 14th.
Valentine's Day.
I was excited. Not in a perverted way—okay, maybe a little—but mostly, I was just happy that things were progressing.
I dressed well, wore my best cologne (which wasn't saying much), and was ready to go.
Then my phone vibrated.
[I'm sorry, Ethan. I won't be coming today.]
My heart sank.
[I don't think I'm ready for that kind of relationship yet. I want to focus on my studies. I hope you understand.]
I stared at the screen.
I understood. I really did. Her future was important. My future was important. It was a reasonable decision.
…But that didn't stop the slow decay that followed.
Day by day, we talked less.Day by day, we drifted apart.Until one day, I realized I was alone.
No girlfriend. No relationship.Just back to being an average guy.
Distractions
I didn't let it get to me too much. I still had games, novels, manga, manhwa, and sports.
I wasn't some shut-in—I played cricket in my free time. It wasn't a popular sport where I lived, but I didn't care. I loved batting. There was something satisfying about hitting a ball with perfect timing. The sound, the impact—it was addicting.
But more than anything, I loved reading.
And yet, every time I picked up a novel, I found myself getting frustrated.
Why are MCs so dense? Why are they so weak-willed?Why do they never make a move, even when the girl is clearly interested?
It's always the same. The entire novel is just the MC stumbling through relationships, only to die in the end protecting a harem he never even kissed. Or, if the story is "wholesome," he marries them all at the very last chapter.
What the fuck?
If I ever got transmigrated or reincarnated, I'd do things my way. I wouldn't be some awkward virgin too scared to touch a girl. I'd live how I wanted, take what I wanted, and enjoy life to the fullest.
...
And that's when my life changed forever.
Fate is a Bitch
It was a normal day.
I left the house, earphones in, listening to music, lost in thought.
Then I heard it.
Screech!
The sound of tires. The blaring of a horn.Headlights rushing toward me at full speed.
Before I could react—
BANG!
A car slammed into me.
Everything went dark.
