Chapter 35: Izashi Enters The Church
Izashi had already anticipated everything. He knew Issei would rush headlong into the church to save Asia, his determination fueled by desperation. Everything had gone according to his meticulous plan, and that included sending Koneko and Kiba to support him. He'd considered the situation carefully—Koneko alone would struggle against all the fallen angels, so Kiba's presence was essential.
As predicted, Koneko was engaged in a brutal fight with the three fallen angels, and it was obvious she was on the losing end. Two of them kept her attention while the third constantly struck when she had her hands full. Though she dodged for a while, her stamina was running thin. Sweat trickled down her face, her usually stoic expression tinged with fatigue and frustration.
Meanwhile, in the shadows of the church, a black cat with golden eyes watched intently, its tail flicking in agitation. The feline wasn't just any ordinary cat—it was Kuroka in her transformed state, and she was growing increasingly restless. Her claws flexed as she glared at the fallen angels with clear disdain. 'These weaklings think they can bully my Shirone-chan? I could crush them right now, but I need to wait... Izashi-kun told me not to interfere yet. He said three minutes, but it's only been one, and I'm already itching to step in!'
Kuroka's gaze darted to Issei, noticing his precarious situation. He wasn't fighting; rather, he was barely managing to dodge Raynare's vicious light spear attacks. 'He's just stalling for time… so typical of him,' she thought, her lips curving into a mischievous grin. 'Lucky boy… once I handle these pests, I'll deal with everything else.'
She glanced over at Kiba, who was slicing through exorcists with deadly precision. He was skilled, no doubt about that. His swordplay was so fluid that Kuroka estimated he'd finish them off in about four minutes. There was no need to worry about him.
But just then, she heard a sharp intake of breath from Koneko, followed by a distressed, "Oh no!"
One of the fallen angels had managed to land a hit, spearing Koneko's leg. The usually composed and silent girl was visibly shaken, her eyes wide with fear. She staggered back, clutching her leg as blood seeped from the wound. Koneko's heart raced, and for the first time in a long while, she felt genuine terror. She didn't want to die here. There was so much she still needed to do—she wanted answers, especially about her sister.
Since Izashi had hinted that her sister might not be what everyone thought, Koneko had been pondering over it. She had stayed quiet, processing the information, but now, in her moment of desperation, all that logic went out the window. Instinct took over, and without thinking, she screamed, "Sister, help me! Save me, sister!"
The sound of Koneko's voice pleading for help sent shockwaves through Kuroka. Her eyes filled with tears, and a flood of emotions surged within her. She had believed Izashi, but hearing her little sister call out for her made it all real. Her heart ached in the best way possible, and her resolve solidified.
With a speed that was almost imperceptible, Kuroka materialized in front of Koneko, blocking the path of the fallen angel poised to strike. Her presence alone made the air grow heavy, and the temperature seemed to drop as she glared at the fallen angels with a cold, lethal stare.
Kuroka's voice was soft yet filled with an undeniable promise of violence. "Now, now, leave this to your big sister, nya~," she said with a comforting smile towards Koneko before turning back to the fallen angels, her expression instantly transforming into one of menace. Her aura exploded, blanketing the entire church, pressing down on everyone inside, including the fallen angels and even Raynare.
Every fallen angel immediately collapsed to their knees, their faces twisted in fear as they struggled to even breathe under Kuroka's overwhelming power. The three fallen angels facing her tried to lift their heads, but all they could make out were her glowing, golden eyes and twitching neko ears. Their terror was palpable.
"Oh-ho, why are you all on your knees? Did you drop something, nya~?" Kuroka taunted them, her smile mocking. She took a step forward, her tone turning cold and unforgiving. "Or maybe you're just so eager to die, nya~?"
The fallen angels couldn't even respond. They were paralyzed by fear, completely outclassed. They realized that this woman was far beyond their level. If they had faced a Ten-Winged Fallen Angel, they might have stood a chance. But against Kuroka? She was a monster in her own right.
Issei, despite the intensity of his fight with Raynare, could feel Kuroka's immense presence too. He looked over, stunned to see Raynare on the ground, unable to stand. 'What the hell…? Who's that? And how did they make Raynare collapse like that?'
Without even using her Senjutsu, Kuroka raised her fist and struck the air three times. Her punches were so fast that they were simultaneous, and the heads of the three fallen angels exploded in unison, their bodies dropping lifelessly to the ground.
Koneko stood frozen, her eyes wide in disbelief. She hadn't expected her sister to show up, let alone kill the fallen angels so effortlessly. But more than that, hearing her sister speak in her familiar way, using her signature "nya~," made something inside Koneko break. Her logic, her caution—it all crumbled. For the first time, Koneko let herself feel joy at seeing her sister again.
Kuroka turned back to Koneko, her face lighting up with a playful grin. "Shirone has grown up so much, nya~. Did you miss your big sister?" Her tone was lighthearted, a sharp contrast to her earlier lethal demeanor.
With Kuroka's arrival and intervention, Raynare was freed from the suppression, but Issei had already used the time to his advantage. Another ten seconds passed, and Ddraig's voice rang out in his head, 'This is the last boost you can handle! Your body is going to hurt like hell tomorrow. Don't say I didn't warn you!'
Issei felt the power surge through him, his body now brimming with energy. Pointing his gauntlet towards Raynare, he shouted, "Dragon Shot!"
A massive beam of crimson energy erupted from his Sacred Gear, blasting through Raynare and ending her existence in an instant. Her body disintegrated, leaving behind only a few glowing remnants of her stolen Sacred Gear.
With the battle over, Issei dropped to his knees, panting heavily. The adrenaline drained from his body, leaving him exhausted. He glanced over at Asia's Sacred Gear, still hovering in the air above Raynare's remains. His hands trembled as he reached for it, pressing the glowing object against Asia's chest. The gear quickly merged back with her body, but as time passed, Issei grew more and more anxious.
"Why isn't she waking up? Come on, Asia, wake up!" he muttered, desperation creeping into his voice. He mentally called out to Ddraig, 'Do you know what's going on? Why isn't she alive!?'
Ddraig's voice was calm but somber. 'It's likely that she died when Raynare ripped the Sacred Gear from her body. I'm sorry, partner.'
Tears welled up in Issei's eyes as the reality hit him. Asia was dead. He had failed to save her, despite everything he'd done. The Boosted Gear, the power—it all felt meaningless now. He clenched his fists, his heart heavy with regret.
At that moment, a brilliant red magic circle materialized in the church. Izashi stepped through, his expression unreadable, but his aura emanated calm confidence. He surveyed the scene with a soft smile.
Kiba was still fending off a few exorcists, but as soon as Izashi snapped his fingers, the remaining enemies were enveloped in a wave of destructive magic. Their bodies were disintegrated, leaving nothing but empty space behind.
Kuroka, Koneko, Kiba, and even Issei turned to look at Izashi. Kiba gave him a respectful bow. "Thank you for the assistance, Izashi-sama."
Izashi waved off the gesture, his smile polite but casual. "No need for formalities. I could sense you were doing fine, but I figured I'd speed things up a bit."
