Chapter 40: Grayfia Arrives
Izashi leaned back in his chair, watching with a faint smile as Rias struggled to focus her magic. The crimson energy of destruction swirled around her, wild and untamed, like a flame without direction. Her frustration was obvious—her brow furrowed, lips drawn into a thin line of concentration. No matter how hard she tried, the power seemed to escape her grasp.
"Relax, Rias," Izashi said softly, his voice smooth yet firm. He stood up and walked behind her, placing his hands on her shoulders. "You're too tense. The power of destruction isn't something you can force to obey. You need to guide it, shape it with intention, not brute strength."
Rias let out a frustrated breath, nodding. "I know, but controlling it is so much harder than it looks. Every time I think I've got it, it slips away."
Izashi chuckled, squeezing her shoulders gently before stepping in front of her. "That's because you're treating it like any other form of magic. This isn't something you control—it's an extension of yourself, of your will. It doesn't obey commands, it responds to purpose. Watch."
With a casual flick of his wrist, crimson energy began to gather in Izashi's palm. But unlike Rias's chaotic power, his was smooth, refined—like molten lava, swirling in perfect harmony. The sphere of destruction in his hand morphed and shifted, taking the shape of a small bird, its wings fluttering as if it were alive.
Rias's eyes widened in amazement. "How… How are you able to control it so easily?"
Izashi smiled, his golden eyes glinting. "Years of practice. Plus, I have a little something extra. Remember, I'm not just relying on the Power of Destruction; I've also fused it with my own abilities."
He flicked his hand again, and the bird dissolved into nothingness. "You'll get there eventually. You just need to stop thinking of it as a weapon and start treating it like a part of you. Once you do, controlling it will become second nature."
Rias sighed, her frustration melting into a smile. "I guess having the younger brother of Lucifer as a teacher has its perks."
Izashi winked at her. "Oh, you have no idea."
Just then, Akeno, who had been sitting nearby and watching their training, stepped forward. Her violet eyes gleamed with curiosity as she held up her hand, where a bolt of holy lightning crackled dangerously. "Izashi, do you think you could help me with my lightning control too? I've been struggling to merge the holy aspect with my devil energy."
Izashi turned his attention to her, nodding thoughtfully. "Sure thing, Akeno. Holy lightning is tricky because it's a direct counter to our devil bloodline, but that also means you can use it to your advantage if you learn to balance both aspects."
Akeno nodded eagerly, stepping closer. "That's exactly what I've been trying to do. But every time I push more holy power into the lightning, it feels like my devil side is fighting against it."
Izashi raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Interesting. You're probably pushing too much too quickly. Try starting smaller. Let's see…"
He reached out, gently placing his hand over hers, his fingers brushing against her palm. "Feel that? The holy energy is repelling the devil energy, but if you carefully thread them together, like weaving a braid, you can create something new. Watch."
A soft hum of power radiated from his hand as he intertwined his own energy with hers. The lightning in Akeno's hand shifted—still crackling, but now smoother, more controlled, with both holy and devil energy coexisting in a delicate balance.
Akeno's eyes lit up in amazement. "I can feel it! It's… it's working!"
Izashi smiled. "Of course it is. Now, practice that on your own. You'll be able to perfect it with time."
As they continued discussing magic control, the evening settled in, and they all gathered in Izashi's room for dinner. Kuroka joined them as well, lounging casually on a cushion with her signature playful smile. Izashi sat at the head of the table, Rias on his right, Akeno on his left, and Kuroka reclining beside him.
The room was filled with a relaxed atmosphere, the four of them enjoying the food and each other's company. They were in the middle of sharing stories when, without warning, a bright red light filled the room. The familiar symbol of the Gremory family's teleportation circle appeared, glowing on the floor.
Izashi and Rias exchanged glances, both knowing what was coming before the figure even materialized.
A moment later, a tall, busty woman in a pristine French maid outfit appeared before them, her silver hair cascading down her back. Her face was expressionless, as always, her posture immaculate. It was none other than Grayfia, the "Strongest Queen" and sister-in-law to both Rias and Izashi.
"Grayfia!" Rias exclaimed, a smile breaking across her face. "What brings you here?"
Izashi, equally surprised, stood up with a grin. "Sister!"
Grayfia's calm, unwavering gaze swept across the room. Her voice, as usual, was monotone but respectful. "Izashi-sama, Rias-sama, I have come to inform you that the heir of the Phenex family, Riser-sama, will be arriving tomorrow. As per your request, Izashi-sama, I am notifying you both one day in advance of his arrival."
Izashi nodded, acknowledging the reason for her sudden appearance. "Thank you, Grayfia. I did ask you to let us know ahead of time." His eyes caught a slight movement—was that a hint of a smile at the corner of Grayfia's mouth? If it was, it was gone as quickly as it appeared.
Grayfia bowed slightly, ready to take her leave, when Izashi suddenly raised his hand. "Wait."
She paused, looking at him with a questioning gaze. "Yes, Izashi-sama?"
"I was actually thinking of calling you out for something," he said, his tone casual but with an undercurrent of excitement. "I want to spar with you. No holding back—I want to test my full strength against you."
Rias and Akeno's eyes widened in surprise, and even Kuroka stopped mid-bite, her ears perking up at the mention of a spar between Izashi and Grayfia.
Grayfia blinked, her face still unreadable. "You wish to challenge me to a spar?" Her voice remained even, but there was a flicker of curiosity behind her silver eyes. "Very well. I am not expected back in the Underworld until tomorrow evening, so I can accompany you in this endeavor."
Izashi's grin widened. "Perfect! Then let's not waste any time."
He glanced around the room at Rias, Akeno, and Kuroka. "Sorry, ladies, but this one's a private match. I need to fight Grayfia at my full strength, and I can't do that with onlookers."
Akeno's reaction was immediate. She stood up and hugged him tightly, her fingers clutching his shirt as she looked up at him with determined eyes. "Win," she said softly but with intense emotion. "Come back with a win, Izashi."
Izashi chuckled, stroking her hair affectionately. "I will. Just wait for me."
Rias, too, gave him a supportive nod, though there was a hint of worry in her eyes. "Be careful. Grayfia is incredibly strong."
Kuroka, however, remained silent, her eyes narrowing slightly as she watched Izashi and Grayfia leave. Once they were gone, she muttered under her breath, "That's not who I'm worried about…"
Her words hung in the air, leaving Rias and Akeno confused.
As Izashi and Grayfia made their way far from the mansion, the atmosphere between them was calm yet filled with a quiet tension. Finally, after traveling a good distance, Izashi stopped and turned to face her.
"We're far enough now," he said, snapping his fingers.
Instantly, a massive barrier enveloped the area, sealing them inside. The barrier shimmered faintly, stretching far beyond the horizon, its sheer size and power causing Grayfia to raise an eyebrow in surprise.
"This is a barrier I created a few days ago," Izashi explained casually. "We can fight at full power in here without anyone detecting us or interfering."
Grayfia nodded, inspecting the barrier with a practiced eye. "Impressive. You've put considerable effort into this."
Izashi grinned. "Not as much effort as you might think. I used the Golden Energy while setting it up, so it didn't take long. But it'll hold."
Grayfia seemed satisfied with his explanation, though her eyes remained sharp, studying him closely. "Very well, Izashi-sama. Shall we begin?"
Izashi's grin widened, his excitement barely contained. "One more thing," he said, shifting into a stance Grayfia hadn't seen before. "Let's make this interesting. The loser has to do whatever the winner says. Deal?"
Grayfia tilted her head slightly, considering the stakes. "Agreed," she said, her voice as calm as ever. "I trust you'll fight honorably."
"Always," Izashi replied, his tone laced with amusement. He raised his hand, crimson energy crackling to life around him, the Power of Destruction surging to the surface. "Now, let's get serious."
Grayfia responded in kind, her body enveloped in a chilling aura of ice magic. The temperature around them plummeted as she summoned her power. Icy winds swirled at her feet, and frost began to spread across the ground.
