Chapter 277: A March Uphill

The meeting in the Headquarters was nothing but a waste of time of asking why I approached the conversation with the Empire the way I did, which ended in one Sentence. "Because I want them to attack us before they are ready to." The simple statement was more than enough for the majority and, therefore, ended the meeting without further issues. It was quite dumb that they even thought it was in question.

So, we waited, but the Empire never came.

The day went out, and the night came upon us without a single soldier attacking.

I found myself sitting at the front, leaning against a trench wall, checking the Tina 1s and their positioning when things finally started. It was dark, but the sound of metal came, and whistles were blown to sound the alarm. Isabelle's' people were on guard, and the night battle lit up as mana started to move. Our Wizards then shot the first spells of fire, ice, and lightning into the enemy forces.

I moved to the front to watch, and my eyes could barely see the dark figures of the soldiers in the Empire moving forward in an orderly march. They had their shields out in front of them and tanked the spells. Their shields also gave the front line a roof as spells clashed, and they brought themselves forward one step at a time, and the spells seemed to break upon their shields differently than normal. Instead of them being effective in a way, it was like they broke apart or were parried, which was not normal in the least.

The fight was just starting, and I could see that they were easily making it up the hill. I quickly sent a mana message to the Tina 1 teams not to fire unless I ordered them to. I wanted to save them for later, and the Empire slowly stomped their way up the hill. Yelling and orders started to ring out.

"The War Chief Isabelle orders us to fight them at the peak, then bring them into the trenches. We are to bring them into our territory!" The orders went out throughout the army, and messengers ran through the Main army. Our wizards never stopped their hailstorm of spells and bringing down the rain. Fireballs and Ice shards would break through the shields and leave soldiers dead on the hill as they continued to march up the hill in fantastic formation. I backed out as my need was not to fight in this battle but to see the Empire's tactics.

Along a long stretch of the hill, the Empire's soldiers started to reach the crest and were met with Beast-kin ready for them. Clubs, Swords, and spears poked at their formation, and Devil Linebreakers greeted them at one part of the formation, with swords and shields of their own cutting into the ranks of the Empire in return. It was bedlam, but their forces did not back down.
Your journey continues with empire

They pushed forward and found it easier than it should have been until they fell forward, and many of the front ranks fell into trenches they had not been prepared for. The first step was a harsh one, and the Beast-kin had long gotten used to it. They practiced stepping up and back into the trenches, and the front line of the Empire stumbled.

A remarkable moment that the Wizards had been hoping for.

One thing that the Empire had not noticed was that only C-ranked Wizards had been shooting their spells.

Until now, that is, the stumbling soldiers found themselves being greeted by B rankers spells that blasted and knocked back large groups of soldiers. Fireballs were the most common, but there was a lightning bolt and a massive Ice shard that hit them and pushed part of the line back and into their other men, leaving the men that had just stumbled either dead or in a trench by themselves as their formation was reeling from the sudden violence of B ranked spells.

It was only thirty seconds before the Empire was back on its feet, but in those thirty seconds, the beast-kin Main army pounced. They had been waiting for weeks to kill humans for what they had done to their homeland, and now they had to kill the true backbone of the forces that allowed them to.

They came down and basked in helms, and C-ranked soldiers were dying by the hundreds. The sudden drum beat resounded throughout the battlefield, and suddenly, those ranks that had just recovered and were about to move forward to save the men who stumbled into the trenches backed up. They put their shields forward and started to walk back down the crest in an orderly fashion, and for the first time tonight, they learned that the Beast kin army was not going to break at the first battle.

This whole attack felt off to me, though. I hated the feeling in my gut saying that this was something to make us feel overconfident. Something to make us feel that they were emotional or just probing. They backed off and left hundreds, if not thousands, to die from the vanguard before leaving. Our forces would not charge down a hill onto a prepared force, so we let them depart with C-ranked spells hitting them, and I watched them walking up to the front again, which now had more blood added to it. I looked down into their camp as the soldiers continued an orderly retreat with absolute discipline that our forces could not even come close to doing ourselves.

When they reached back into the distance, Isabelle called to put people on watch and clean up the battlefield. Repair teams from the logistics army ran to the front and started to note changes they wanted to make to the defenses and their condition from the battle.

The Logistics army was still learning, and this was another lesson for them to learn from, even if it was just a small battle.

I turned to headquarters, knowing that this was just a probe, but so many things felt weird. There were no A rankers battling. They did not even attempt to suppress our Wizards with their own, and it was like they did not know about the trenches, which would mean their A rankers, who could fly, did not tell the army.

The Empire was up to something...

Who would have thought?
