Chapter 604: 590 Two Questions
Surrounding him was an empty darkness, though it might not be appropriate to say he was "riding" the darkness, because in the Void, existence itself, and thus light, was absent.
Bai Zhongqi stood in the Void, looking around. He watched a green train in the distance, making a clanging noise as it slowly came to a stop before him.
The train door opened, and a face identical to his leaned out, smiled at Bai Zhongqi, and asked, "New here? Are you headed to the Elder's Activity Room?"
Bai Zhongqi glanced inside the train compartment. The empty compartment had five or six people sitting; all were "Bai Zhongqi." These people were dressed differently, some in suits and leather shoes, some in beach shorts, floral shirts, and flip-flops, and one even wore a full Thai servant's outfit with a small red dot on his forehead, giving off a "sultry and charming" air.
"Ah, yes," Bai Zhongqi replied.
The fellow above smiled, made way for him to come aboard, and said no more.
Bai Zhongqi looked at the people on the train, still feeling a bit creeped out. However, he was really there to gather more information, being new to the Elder Race and still quite naive about many things.
Bai Zhongqi picked someone he thought might be easier to talk to and sat down across from him, ready to greet him; but just as he opened his mouth, he saw a blur, and suddenly there was no one opposite him.
He turned around and saw that the man had moved to a much farther seat and was staring intently at a newspaper.
Bai Zhongqi pursed his lips, finding these "Bai Zhongqis" really troublesome.
He tried multiple times to initiate a conversation but found that no one on the train seemed inclined to talk, leaving him to sit there, utterly bored.
The train seemed to travel for an indeterminate period, because in the Void, time did not exist, and the sense of time was but a jest; Bai Zhongqi felt it could have been a long or short time, but in reality, nothing had passed.
This time, coming to the Elder's Activity Room, Bai Zhongqi got to see its exterior. It seemed to be an island floating in the Void, but atop the island it more closely resembled a typical city. It had a distinctly vintage feel, like early-20th-century New York, but with a more unique architectural style. The highest building in the center was about a hundred meters tall, with some peeling exterior, yet it looked rather imposing.
"Let's go," the first "Bai Zhongqi" said to Bai Zhongqi with a smile again.
As soon as Bai Zhongqi stepped out of the train, he discovered it was raining. The people walking on the street all had faces like his; many of them wore Burberry-like classic long trench coats, gentleman's hats, and carried large black umbrellas.
Bai Zhongqi himself was dressed quite casually in a loose linen shirt, which felt slightly cool in the little breeze.
He glanced at an umbrella stand by the train door, took an umbrella, and walked out of the compartment. Looking back, he saw that the green train had turned into a yellow tram, which trolled away with a ringing bell.
Swarms of "Bai Zhongqis" poured into the highest building, which was the Elder Race's Elder's Activity Room.
"Interesting, the last time he visited, that hall was on the first floor."
This time, the conference room wasn't as crowded as before, but the atmosphere of quarreling was just as intense.
Bai Zhongqi didn't have any acquaintances there and felt like a freshman at the beginning of school, sitting nervously about a hundred rows back.
Finally, the one sitting next to him seemed a bit spirited and sighed deeply to him, "You must be new here, I originally thought that our Elder Race would thrive for sure. Unfortunately, lately, seven Elders have died one after another, which has us very worried in this seniors' activity room."
The Elder Race is immortal, but not undying.
Bai Zhongqi was slightly shocked and asked, "What happened?"
The man with the small mustache, known as "Bai Zhongqi," said, "Two of them probably got bored of living and killed themselves, and another died in his own universe during a war. These are considered normal deaths, but the remaining four are different. Their existence was erased."
Bai Zhongqi asked in surprise, "Even the Elder Race can be erased?"
The small mustache shook his head, "That shouldn't be possible, which is why it's so strange. There are conspiracy theorists suspecting that some special force is targeting us. It's not rare for younger intelligent races to covet the unique abilities of the Elder Race and attempt harm, but successes have been very few. This time, with four of us killed, many who feel they haven't lived enough are probably starting to panic."
Patting the somewhat shocked Bai Zhongqi on the shoulder, he said, "Newcomer, don't worry about it, you haven't even sorted out your own mess yet, no need to worry about those other old folks. I know why you came to the seniors' activity room, to deal with the destruction of your mother planet and to reopen your connection to the Universe, right?"
Bai Zhongqi shrank his neck and said, "Why do I feel like I don't have any privacy?"
The small mustache laughed heartily and said, "It's normal, your fate is still tied in a knot, firmly bound by the law of cause and effect, it's too easy to see what's happening with you."
Not dwelling on this matter, Bai Zhongqi sincerely asked for advice, "So how do I solve the two problems I'm currently facing?"
The small mustache said, "Let's start with the complicated one, to reopen the Universe linked to you, you have to walk your own path and completely resolve the issues. Of course, given your current situation, reopening the linkage seems crucial for you. So, I'll suggest a shortcut. Didn't you build a Sky-Piercing Pyramid on Mars at some point?"
"It seems like I did," Bai Zhongqi himself had almost forgotten.
"That thing was left behind by one of the original few Elders, who has long since died. Its essence is an interface for managing the connected Universe, but with your little abilities, you probably can't use it yet. It's not impossible though; you need to collect twelve Destiny Artifacts again and recreate your twelve Knights of Destiny. These Destiny Artifacts must not be those casually made by the Elder Race like before; they must be crafted by the powerful being who left behind the Sky-Piercing Pyramid. Oh, actually, you have already received two of them."
Bai Zhongqi is no fool and immediately realized what he was talking about, "Are you referring to the Twelve Divine Weapons?"
"Exactly, that person left twelve Divine Mechas in your Universe, each basically cheating the rules. However, these items are also fatally entangled by the law of cause and effect; without the suppression of the Elder Race, the person or civilization that possesses the Divine Weapons is likely to thrive and then decline. One of the reasons the Ancient Universe's second era of civilization fell is due to several powerful civilizations possessing one of the twelve Divine Weapons and starting to attack each other, eventually leading to the downfall of all."
