Chapter 61: Chapter 61 - Leaving Essos.
[Chapter Size: 2100 Words.]
Third Person POV.
Pentos.
...
...
The place fell silent as Khal Drogo's head rolled a few more meters before finally stopping, blood spread across the sand. Jon ignored the silence and turned his attention to the two Dothraki men approaching him with bloodlust in their eyes, intent on killing him.
"I see... You are the Khal's bloodriders," Jon said calmly, knowing a little about the culture of these desert men who would try to avenge their Khal.
As they advanced, brandishing their arakhs, Jon kept his weapon ready, twirling it slightly while waiting for the enemies, staying close to Khal Drogo's lifeless body.
He waited for the first move under the watchful gaze of all, the absolute silence pressing in. As the first opponent approached, Jon proved quicker than his adversary, who attempted to strike him. Jon cut him down before the movement was even completed, killing him instantly. The body fell to the ground in agony, blood gushing from the neck.
Without hesitation, Jon focused on the second enemy and spun his body to evade the attack. The Dothraki struck only air as Jon completed the spin. Though the man tried to ready himself for another attack, he didn't even notice the blade coming from behind until it was too late. Jon's spinning motion decapitated him cleanly. Both opponents lay dead.
The crowd remained silent, watching Jon with a mix of admiration, fear, and anger. But no one else moved.
"It seems I've won," Jon remarked calmly, turning to face the group. The onlookers exchanged nervous glances.
"What are you doing? What has he done?" a hysterical voice echoed from behind them. It was Viserys, his expression marked by panic. He was waiting for an answer, but no one spoke. Jon looked at him as if he were a fool.
The Dothraki began to act. The first knelt, pressing his knees into the ground while staring at Jon. Soon after, the second followed suit. Then the third, the fourth... The crowd started to kneel, one after another.
"What is this? Are they saying I am the Khal now?" Jon raised an eyebrow, looking at the servant who had helped him earlier with translations for the Khal, who now seemed nervous.
"Tell them I am not the one they seek, and they should not kneel before me, for I am leaving. I am here only for the girl. I have no interest in being their Khal," Jon declared firmly.
The man began translating Jon's words, and murmurs spread as they whispered among themselves. Jon ignored them and made his way to the platform where Daenerys stood, staring at him intently, visibly nervous.
Jon approached her as she watched him cautiously. He simply smiled at her. "You're free from this marriage. Are you ready to return to Westeros with me?" Jon asked.
"I... I don't know," she murmured, still confused.
"Take your hands off her! What do you think you're doing?" Viserys's voice rang out again as he stormed toward the platform, glaring at Jon with anger. He had ruined all his plans, and it showed in his furious expression.
"Do not come any closer," Jon replied sternly. "Otherwise, you'll regret it."
Viserys stopped, trembling with rage, while the northern guard and Illyrio's man hesitated, sensing a growing fear of Jon after witnessing the earlier events.
"I am the king of Westeros!" Viserys suddenly exclaimed, beginning to advance again. As he stepped within Jon's reach, he found himself unable to take another step as Jon delivered a direct punch. His consciousness faded as his jaw shattered under Jon's fist, sending him flying off the platform.
Ser Jorah Mormont quickly drew his sword.
"Don't try anything, Northman. Otherwise, you'll end up like the Dothraki," Jon taunted, casting a challenging glare at the man.
Jorah swallowed hard. "What do you plan to do with the girl?" he asked.
"She will come with me. Or, at least, I hope that's what she wants. I'll give her a choice, unlike her brother," Jon replied, ignoring Jorah and focusing on the girl.
He briefly glanced at her brother, lying on the ground and being helped by Illyrio's servants. The crowd of Dothraki remained silent, beginning to rise after Jon declined the role of Khal.
Daenerys stared at him for a moment before asking, "I won't go through this again, will I?"
Jon shook his head with a small smile. "No. I will protect you," he said, waiting for her response.
Despite her initial hesitation, she stood up, nervous, agreeing to leave and abandon the destiny her brother had planned for her. Even so, she still showed concern for Viserys, glancing at him on the ground despite all he had done. But she turned back to Jon with a more determined look.
"That's good. Come with me," Jon said, lifting her into his arms before she could react as he descended the platform. He walked through the crowd, passing by Viserys, who was still sprawled on the ground. No Dothraki stopped him; on the contrary, they parted to make way for him until he reached the horse waiting for his departure.
Daenerys was carried in silence. When they reached the horses, Jon set her down briefly before holding her by the waist, startling her slightly. He lifted her and placed her gently on the horse. Then he mounted behind her.
Jon gave a slight tug on the reins, and they moved forward through the Dothraki crowd. The people merely watched as they rode off, fading into the distance.
"Where are we going?" Daenerys asked, realizing they weren't heading toward Pentos, instead passing the city walls and gate.
"We're going to the desert, to that rocky area," Jon replied, focused on the path ahead. "Our ride to Westeros is there. Soon, you'll be surprised," he added but said nothing more as they traveled. They advanced until they reached a higher, rockier area, hiding from the Dothraki crowd, which was likely still unsure about what to do next.
Daenerys glanced around, a little worried and confused about why Jon had brought her here. But after weaving through some rocks, she saw they had arrived in front of a massive creature sprawled on the ground, its body coiled.
Jon dismounted calmly and helped Daenerys off the horse, her intrigue deepening. The creature appeared to be sleeping, and at first, she couldn't see its head. However, judging by the wings and claws, there was no doubt: it was a dragon.
Jon approached Ghost, who had dashed toward him as soon as Jon dismounted. He had left the direwolf here before attending the Dothraki wedding. Jon said nothing while Ghost seemed intent on reminding him of his presence.
"This… this can't be," Daenerys murmured, her eyes fixed on the creature as she tried to comprehend what she was seeing—whether it was truly real.
"Didn't I tell you yesterday that I had a dragon?" Jon said, his voice light.
Daenerys let out a soft gasp. Although she had heard Jon mention it before, she had thought it was just a joke or a made-up story. But now it all made sense when he said he had been in Winterfell in the morning and Pentos by night—something that should have been impossible.
At that moment, the dragon raised its head slowly, revealing glowing red eyes that fixed on Jon. It noticed the girl but quickly seemed indifferent to Daenerys's presence, as if only Jon mattered.
"Have you fed? Can you fly to Westeros again?" Jon asked in the Old Tongue.
The dragon responded with a warm huff, seeming to agree with his words.
"Good," Jon said as he turned to Daenerys, curiosity in his eyes.
"That's not Valyrian, is it?" she asked, her expression suspicious.
Jon shook his head. "No, it's the Old Tongue. The dragon responds only to it. It doesn't seem Valyrian—after all, it can breathe ice, not fire," Jon explained.
As he spoke, Daenerys unconsciously walked toward the dragon, taking slow, awe-filled steps until she finally touched its scales, white as snow—though she had never seen snow in her life. The dragon's appearance intrigued her.
The dragon felt her touch and looked at her with apparent displeasure, making Daenerys slightly nervous. That look of disdain seemed judgmental.
"Don't hurt her," Jon's voice was firm. "She's with me now and must be protected," he warned.
The dragon let out another huff, producing a cold mist as if responding with mild irritation but not outright disagreement. It tolerated the human's touch, though it seemed unimpressed. Jon sighed as he reached for Ghost and retrieved some clothing from a dimensional space he had with him.
"Use this." He said, handing the clothes to Daenerys. It was a coat he had brought from Winterfell, along with some warm clothes. He had anticipated that they would need to prepare for the wind atop the dragon, especially when they reached the North and perhaps even beyond the Wall, where temperatures would drop drastically.
Daenerys hesitated but obeyed. She took the coat and began putting it on. After that, Jon asked her to climb onto the dragon. Despite her nervousness, Daenerys nodded and climbed up onto its back, with Jon right behind her to assist. The dragon, which was inclined, made it easier to climb.
"Come on, girl. It's time to go." Jon said to the dragon.
The dragon obeyed, spreading its massive wings. It took a few steps before beginning to flap them vigorously. That was when Daenerys felt, for the first time, the wind against her face as the dragon gained height. For the first time, she experienced something she had never imagined, yet had always dreamed of: flying on a dragon.
Feeling freer than ever before, Daenerys looked down and saw Pentos and the Dothraki camp shrink into tiny spots in the landscape. She didn't know if anyone had seen the dragon take off, but that didn't matter. They were leaving, heading north across Essos.
After a few hours of flight, they stopped to rest and eat something. It was their first meal of the day. The dragon landed gently on an open plain, and Jon dismounted, helping Daenerys do the same.
While they were eating, she looked at Jon, some questions forming in her mind. "You said you intend to take revenge." Daenerys's voice was quiet as she looked at Jon.
He was sitting, holding Ghost in his lap, while the dragon was a few meters away, feeding on something Jon had given it. Jon looked up at her and nodded.
"Yes, I will." Jon replied firmly.
"Do we have allies, then? Will Westeros be waiting with open arms, like Viserys used to say?" Daenerys asked, starting to believe that Jon was truly a relative of hers, a son of Rhaegar Targaryen.
"A nonsense." Jon answered, leaving Daenerys stunned, and he continued, "Your brother doesn't seem to understand reality most of the time. Westeros never expected the return of the Targaryens, at least not most of the people. We are just ghosts that most don't want to see again. We're even considered mad because of the mad king. But I'm still seeking revenge."
"But do you have an army?" She was surprised by this and even a little disappointed, but she asked again, clearly aware that they would need an army to restore her family's throne.
"Yes and no. I'm with a group beyond the Wall. We're heading there. Maybe, if I can train them, they can become a decent group." Jon explained, making Daenerys even more surprised.
"Beyond the Wall?" She knew that was where the Free Folk lived, according to stories she had heard since childhood.
"Yes. We'll be going there first to settle some things, and then we'll head south. Don't worry about the Free Folk. After all, you're under my protection, and I intend to keep my eyes on you." Jon said, trying to reassure her. Daenerys felt a little more at ease, although she was still nervous.
Without further conversation, they ate and returned to the dragon's back before heading toward the sea. For several hours, they flew in silence.
"Have you given her a name? Does she have a name?" Daenerys asked, noticing that Jon never called the dragon by any name, only by "girl." This indicated that the dragon was female.
"Not yet. Maybe I'll give her a name when we get to our destination." Jon replied.
Suddenly, the dragon exhaled a blast of ice through its nostrils, scattering small shards around. Jon stood still, receiving the ice, while Daenerys quickly shielded herself from the creature's sudden movement.
Jon calmly stroked the dragon's scales. "It's okay, we'll choose a name for you soon." He spoke in a calm tone.
The white dragon continued flying, crossing the sea toward Westeros, before heading north across the continent with the goal of returning to the Free Folk.
