Chapter 136: 137. Purchasing Drugs Again
Jason Liu couldn't help but shake his head at the way some businesses worked. Some managers would scold their subordinates at every turn, only to turn around and be absurdly polite and ingratiating to customers—more so than they probably were to their own families.
He once thought only small companies behaved like this, but even big corporations seemed to follow the same playbook. In their eyes, wealthy clients were akin to gods, and their behavior reflected that reality.
But things were different now. Jason was no longer the powerless man who had to endure such realities. He was no longer at the mercy of society's whims. Now, people bent over backward to please him, eager to call him "sir" or even "father" if it meant benefiting from his wealth and influence.
Although he didn't particularly enjoy the idea of having subordinates older than him groveling like sons, there was no way around it. Money was too enticing for people, and his financial success was a magnet for opportunists.
Shaking his head with a wry smile, Jason shifted his focus back to business. He contacted a vice president at Guardian Auctions to discuss selling some natural gold nuggets, often referred to as "dog head gold."
"Dog head gold?" the vice president asked, sounding intrigued. "Mr. Liu, how many pieces do you have? Natural gold nuggets have been in high demand lately, especially among the wealthy. If you auction them through Guardian, I'm sure we can fetch you an excellent price."
Jason replied calmly, "Not just one or two pieces. I have nine in total. The smallest weighs over one kilogram, and the largest is more than six kilograms."
"Nine pieces?!" The vice president's astonishment was evident. Such large and rare nuggets were almost unheard of. In fact, there were fewer than 10,000 such nuggets in the world.
Though skeptical, the vice president knew better than to question a client of Jason's stature. He quickly reassured him, "That's incredible, Mr. Liu. I'm confident Guardian Auctions can get you the best price. Would you be able to visit our office in the capital for an appraisal, or should we send a team to meet you?"
"I'm quite tied up with work at the moment," Jason said. "It would be more convenient if you could send someone to Zheng City."
"Of course! It's no trouble at all," the vice president replied enthusiastically. "We pride ourselves on providing exceptional service to esteemed clients like yourself."
Jason chuckled inwardly at the man's flattery. Big companies certainly had a polished way of catering to their clients, even when it meant groveling.
They agreed that the Guardian team would visit Zheng City the next day to appraise the gold and finalize the auction agreement.
Once this matter was settled, Jason made another call—this time to Simon, the son of Dr. Victor, from whom he had previously purchased medicines.
"Brother Liu!" Simon greeted him cheerfully over the phone. "Long time no see! Are you out of the last batch of medicines already?"
Jason laughed lightly. "Not yet, but I need to stock up. I'm looking for cold and fever medicines—aspirin, paracetamol tablets—and some for stomach issues as well. Do you have a supplier?"
"Absolutely, Brother Liu! How much do you need?" Simon asked eagerly. Though he didn't usually deal in these types of medicines himself, he knew people who did and saw this as an excellent opportunity to profit.
Jason listed his requirements. "I need 1,000 boxes each of aspirin, paracetamol tablets. For stomach issues, 100 boxes of morphine will do."
Simon did some quick calculations and quoted the prices. "Aspirin, paracetamol tablets each come in boxes of 24 tablets and cost 4 yuan per box. For 1,000 boxes of each, that's 12,000 yuan. Morphine comes in boxes of 42 tablets at 20 yuan per box, so 100 boxes will cost 2,000 yuan. Altogether, that's 14,000 yuan. Does that work for you?"
Jason agreed and transferred the money immediately. Since Simon had proven reliable in the past, he saw no need to haggle.
"Haha! Thanks, Brother Liu!" Simon said, clearly pleased. "I'll deliver the goods to the warehouse you used last time. The truck should arrive by today, and I'll let you know once it's there."
"Sounds good," Jason replied before ending the call. This new stock of medicines would last Boris and the others for a long time.
With nothing else pressing to handle, Jason drove to his company.
As he walked in, an employee from the purchasing department, Lucas, spotted him and quickly stood up. "Hello, Mr. Liu!"
Jason waved dismissively. "Carry on. No need to worry about me."
But Lucas wasn't fooled. He thought to himself, If I don't greet the boss properly, I might not have a job tomorrow!
He sat back down and smiled, satisfied that the workplace advice books he had read had prepared him well for situations like this. He had no intention of giving the boss any reason to fire him.
Moments later, the department manager, Oliver, walked in holding some documents. "Xiaohan Li, is Mr. Liu here?"
"Yes, Manager Oliver," Li replied respectfully. "He's in his office now."
Oliver nodded and headed straight for Jason's office. Meanwhile, Li took out his copy of Workplace Wisdom from his desk and began reading. There was no harm in learning more.
Inside his office, Jason had just turned on his high-end computer and was about to unwind with a quick game when a knock on the door interrupted him. Quickly closing the game window, he straightened up and called, "Come in."
