Chapter 143: 143. Jon's Bailing
Even the village had suffered attacks from wolves. Several chickens and sheep were killed, leaving the northern folk annoyed with these wild predators.
"It's a pure white one—so rare!" Bud exclaimed in amazement.
dicken got up from his seat and crouched beside Jon, his tall frame towering as he inspected the animal. His honest face showed his surprise. "Jon, where did you find this wolf?"
"This isn't just any wolf," Jon corrected him sharply. "It's a direwolf, not some wild hound."
Jon continued, "We found a dead direwolf on our way back after executing a deserter from the Night's Watch. Beneath its body, we discovered six pups. Robb and I took five of them, one for each of us. This one has pure white fur, so I named it ghost."
"A direwolf?" Boris was taken aback. "Aren't they supposed to live farther north, beyond the Wall, in the haunted forests? How did it end up here?"
Jon carefully unwrapped the tiny direwolf from his coat and placed it gently on the table. It was small, barely the size of two palms, but its thick white fur gleamed under the light. Its half-closed ruby eyes peered out as it rested on the cushion of Jon's clothes, letting out soft whimpers.
Jason Liu approached, intrigued by the sight. He studied the little creature wrapped in Jon's coat.
"It's bigger than I imagined," Jason said, surprised. "It looks like a three-month-old pup. Its fur is thick and shiny, and it already looks strong."
Jon quickly stepped aside and greeted Jason respectfully. "My lord."
Jason nodded in acknowledgment, then glanced at the pup and asked, "Did you feed it? It sounds hungry."
Jon froze, embarrassed. "I rushed back for your luncheon, my lord, and carried Ghost with me the whole way. I haven't had time to feed it yet."
"Give it some goat milk. That should work," Boris suggested as he joined the group. "Though ideally, you'd find a nursing dog. That would make feeding it much easier."
"Won't the dog bite it?" Bud asked doubtfully.
Boris shook his head. "Not if you rub the wolf with the dog's scent first."
"Let a dog nurse Ghost?" Jon hesitated, then shook his head firmly. "No, I'll feed it myself with goat milk. If I let a dog nurse it, I'm worried Ghost will act like a dog when it grows up. It's an icefield wolf, not a hound!"
Jason smiled and patted Jon's shoulder. "You're right. Raising it yourself will make it loyal to you. Direwolves are kings of the forest. Even shadowcats avoid them. Go to the kitchen and get some goat milk. Feed it yourself."
Lina and the other young girls had been watching from the side. Bella, a lively girl, eagerly volunteered, "I'll get the goat milk!" She dashed off to the kitchen and soon returned with a bowl of milk.
Jon took the bowl and placed it near Ghost's mouth. The little wolf, clearly famished, sniffed the milk. It opened its bright ruby eyes, looked at Jon briefly, then dipped its head into the bowl and began drinking eagerly.
"It's drinking! It's drinking!" Michal, squatting nearby with his chin in his hands, clapped his hands excitedly.
The group was delighted. It seemed the little direwolf would be fine with goat milk.
Relieved, Jon smiled as he watched Ghost drink. Afterward, the group returned to their seats for the meal.
Jon, as a representative of the East family, sat near Boris. Around them were dicken, McCann, Bud, Marb, Rubin, and Kent.
The maids poured wine for everyone, and Jason Liu raised his cup for a toast. With each round of wine, the mood grew livelier. The initial formality gave way to a more relaxed atmosphere.
As they ate, Jason listened to Lina recount the recent sales at the store.
"In the past few days, we've sold over 10,000 gel pens, nearly 90,000 refills, 200,000 sheets of A4 paper, over 5,000 sheets of A1 paper, and more than 20,000 bars of soap. The total sales brought in more than 1,600 gold dragons."
Jason nodded, unsurprised. "Small merchants don't have much capital, so their orders are smaller. I'm waiting for the bigger merchants from the Reach, Dorne, and King's Landing. They're the ones who'll drive the real business."
He added, "Once the free cities across the Narrow Sea—like Braavos, Cohor, and Pentos—see the goods, demand will rise even more. Selling these products won't be a problem at all."
Turning to Lina, he praised her efforts. "Lina, you've worked hard. Learning to read, write, and keep accounts must have been tough, but you've done well."
Lina blushed slightly but grinned. "It wasn't hard, my lord. I enjoy learning."
Jason smiled. "You've improved so much in just two months. Keep it up."
He addressed the other young women—Martha, Susan, Venissa, and Bella. "You all need to continue learning as well. If you don't, the business will grow beyond your abilities. You must know how to read, write, and calculate if you want to handle bigger responsibilities."
The girls nodded earnestly, promising to work harder.
With that, the meal continued, filled with laughter, food, and the occasional curious glance at the little direwolf nestled near Jon.
