Chapter 12: Greyjoy rebellion end
"Milord, that was so cool!" A little boy ran up to him after the fighting had siezed, "do you think I can one day be as strong as you?"
"What are you doing on the battlefield? Where are your parents?" Renly got to the boy's eye level, he was nine years old, maybe ten.
"My daddy was killed and the bad men took my mommy", the boy frowned, "but you will get her back to me, right? With your magic?"
"I will do my best", Renly ruffled his hair, "go back to the other villagers"
"Yes, milord… thank you" he whispered before running away.
They didn't see any raiders after that and when the royal fleet arrived, Renly went out to reunite with his brother.
"Renly, good to see you. I see you have had great success in protecting the lands" Robert chuckled, "you even got to see some action, I heard"
"Yes, Euron Greyjoy is dead", Renly took a goblet from one of the tables and took a sip, dornish red, pleasant aroma and rich taste.
"So you got to kill one of them too… we already killed the squid's heir, his other children are holed up in pyke. We are planning to lay siege on it in a week. I would love to have you join us", Robert said, "I don't see the iron cunts attacking any more villages, not with their lords holed up in pyke"
"I would love to" Renly grinned, "I have sent one of the Greyjoy's to the seven hells, the others soon to join him"
"That's what I like to hear! Stannis kept blabbing on about letting this 'king' live but you understand me, none of them are allowed to live… maybe the children", Robert mused, "the children still can be brought to the right path but the men must die. Who to give the iron islands to, though? His children can't be allowed to maintain their claim on the isles, what kind of message would that send? I need a loyal man, with experience running a territory to keep the cunts from rebelling again"
"What about Stannis? He is still bitter that I got Storm's end, surely this would satisfy him", Renly suggested but Robert shook his head.
"No, Stannis is on my council, he wouldn't be able to govern like these islands need to be governed", Robert explained, his eyebrows furrowing, "well, I'll figure it out when I get to it, come, drink with me"
The two of them drank themselves silly. The wine just kept on flowing and to be honest, Renly couldn't remember much of what happened, it was all so fuzzy. He awoke the next day with a giant headache. They left for Pyke after lunch, the hangover not quite gone yet.
When they arrived at the castle's gates, they were barricaded.
After a week of waiting, Robert grew impatient, "can't you just magic our way into the castle?" Asked his dear brother, taking a heavy gulp from his cup, demanding, "more wine!"
The maid refilled his cup and he grasped her firm buttocks. She didn't seem to mind.
"I could but that would make you look weak, wouldn't it? Only winning through the help of sorcery? It is better to starve them out the old fashioned way. Pyke is notoriously unable to grow its own crops and with us cutting off their waters, they can't even fish. Their starving lowborn will open their gates to us the moment they hear we offer them food, let me spread the word and the gates will be open, we will be able to kill the lords for rebelling and be hailed as heroes by the smallfolk" Renly suggested, playing with his roast ham.
"Yes, that is all I ask, I don't want to sit around here any longer, go and spread the word"
"As you command, your grace" Renly gave a theatrical bow and walked out of the cabin. The crew was preoccupied, not paying attention to him, so, he took food with him and transformed into a raven, flying past the gates of Pyke and retaking human form in a back alley. What he saw was disastrous, he saw them consuming each other, children eating what was clearly a human leg, just to survive. All the rats had been eaten and now, they resorted to cannibalism. The ones eating were mostly the children, tears streaming down their faces, disgusted by themselves.
Renly cleared his throat, "dear citizens of Pyke! Are you tired of this injustice? The greyjoys are feasting in the castle proper, whilst you are starving here, eating your own and for what? So that the krakens can call themselves 'kings'?! It isn't just, it isn't right, so I call to you, open the gates to the city and this, and much more can be yours!" He threw the food at the crowd that had gathered. They brawled each other for the food, "If you let us in now, the Greyjoys will never let you suffer like this again! Hear my words and know they are true!"
With a flutter, he wild shaped into a raven again and flew back to the ships. It didn't even take an hour for the gates to open and the army to march into Pyke. They killed the lords and ladies, whilst sharing the food they had brought with the common folk. The Greyjoy's didn't even get the chance to cut their rope bridges. Those who tried fighting back were killed and those who surrendered were taken prisoner.
When all was said and done, the lord of Pyke had been killed, as had his heir. The only Greyjoys left alive were Asha and Theon.
Robert had a change of heart, apparently. He decided that the Greyjoy's could rule Pyke and the Iron Islands still but only after they had been raised by respectable houses. Asha was given to Jon Arryn, to be raised in the capital and Theon was sent to Winterfell with Ned. Robert appointed some lord from the crownlands as the temporary lord of Pyke and the Iron islands.
