Chapter 28: Chapter 28
He had short white hair that resembled oak, gradually fading into a crimson hue as if splashed with blood. His rainbow-colored irises bore the words "Upper Rank" in his right eye and "Two" in his left. Despite the gentle smile on his face, it masked the malice of a demon.
"Hehehe, I've been waiting for you for quite some time. You are much stronger than the other Demon Slayers I've encountered before. So, you are a Hashira, huh? My name is Doma, Upper Rank Two," Doma said with a feigned gentle smile, clapping his hands like a harmless priest.
"Since you are a Hashira, and such a precious girl at that, you deserve the honor of my remembering your name. What is it?"
"I am the Flower Hashira, Kochou Kanae," Kanae replied, gripping her Nichirin sword tightly in both hands.
"Mr. Demon, since you can communicate, you must have the ability to think. You were human once, just like us. Eating people must be beyond your control, and deep down, you surely don't want to continue."
Doma tilted his head, curious that the Hashira hadn't immediately attacked him. "Oh? Are you preaching to me? How interesting, a Demon Slayer trying to redeem a demon."
"Mr. Demon, you must know that gods have descended. I believe that if you sincerely repent to them, you will be saved," Kanae said, her voice gentle.
She felt that as a Demon Slayer, she should not only protect people but also offer demons an escape from their pitiful state of existence.
Doma's eyes widened in surprise before he let out a laugh. "Ah, I see. You think I'm miserable and in need of salvation. How cute! Very well, tell me about these gods of yours. I want to repent." His words were dripping with sarcasm.
Although this woman intrigued him, he still needed to extract information for Lord Muzan.
"Do you truly wish to repent, Mr. Demon?" Kanae asked.
"Of course! That's why I'm here," Doma said, feigning innocence, covering his chest with a sigh. "But, I'm afraid that the gods will just kill me."
"If you are truly willing to repent, I will take you to the shrine. If your intentions are pure, the gods will not harm you," Kanae offered.
She knew this demon was likely sent by Muzan, trying to gather information about the gods. If he truly wanted redemption, she would bring him to the shrine herself.
"Haa... It seems I have no other choice." Doma's expression darkened as he dropped his act, revealing a wide grin and sharp teeth. "Looks like I'll have to capture you instead."
The air around them chilled instantly, a terrifying pressure settled in the area.
Kanae swung her sword instinctively, her body moving on pure reflex.
"Flower Breathing: Fourth Form – Crimson Hanagoromo!"
Two arc-shaped slashes came down towards Doma's neck.
Doma sighed in annoyance, a look of impatience on his face. "Originally, I would have liked to play with you a little longer, but I must hurry, or Lord Muzan will be upset."
From his robe, he drew two folding fans with golden frames and painted lotus flowers.
"Blood Demon Art: Freezing Clouds."
The iron fans sprayed a freezing mist, covering Kanae.
"Flower Breathing: Second Form – Honorable Shadow Plum!"
Kanae swung her sword in all directions, dispersing the icy mist, and retreated swiftly.
"It's so cold..." She glanced at her hands and saw they were turning purple from frostbite. Her chest tightened painfully, and she coughed.
"I've killed forty-seven Hashira by now. Once their lungs freeze, it becomes easy to finish them off," Doma taunted, his voice cheerful.
"The so-called Breathing Techniques that you all rely on become useless once your lungs freeze. With my Blood Demon Art, I can turn my own blood into freezing mist. All I have to do is dodge until you breathe enough of it, and then I can freeze your lungs solid," Doma said proudly.
Kanae's eyes widened. Was this how all the past Hashira who fought Upper Rank Two had perished? She felt her grip on her Nichirin Sword weaken.
Doma smiled. "Why don't you just tell me what I want to know? I'll even let you live. It's a fair trade, don't you think?"
Kanae said nothing. Her grip on her sword tightened. She had sympathy for demons, but she had been lied to too many times. This demon had already deceived her once. She couldn't trust him again.
"Why won't you cooperate? It's such a waste," Doma said with a sigh. His eyes gleamed with malice. "Perhaps your sister will have to choose—save you or keep the secrets. Such a tragic dilemma!"
Suddenly, the sound of swords clashing echoed through the night as Kanae charged forward, determined to fight to the end.
---
Meanwhile, Kanao, after dispatching the last demon, turned to rush to her sister's aid.
She froze in place as she spotted Kanae, her sister, scarred and held captive by the demon marked with "Upper Rank Two" in his eyes.
Kanae's Nichirin Sword had been driven into her shoulder, and Doma held her by the neck.
"Kanao, run... go towards the shrine..." Kanae said, her voice weak.
Doma smiled, unaffected by the situation, his face a mask of gentle amusement. "Oh, little Demon Slayer, if you tell me about the gods on that mountain, I'll let your sister go. You wouldn't want her to die, would you?"
Kanao gritted her teeth, tears welling in her eyes. "You're lying. Even if I tell you, you'll never let us go. I'm not as naive as my sister. When we chose to become Demon Slayers, we were prepared to die."
She raised her sword defiantly. "I will fight by my sister's side."
Kanae coughed, struggling for breath. "Yes... we've always been ready to sacrifice ourselves for others. No matter what, we won't betray the gods."
Doma looked at them, disappointed. Muzan's impatience weighed on him, and he did not want to risk displeasing his master. "It seems there's no other way. Too bad... but I will savor you two differently than the others."
He exerted more pressure, his smile twisting into a sinister grin. Just as he was about to snap Kanae's neck, a soft light began to glow from her body.
"What?!" Doma's face twisted in shock as he instinctively released Kanae, recoiling from the light.
The hand that had held Kanae seemed to burn under the glow, blistering as if dipped in boiling oil.
"This light..." Doma's voice cracked as he stumbled back.
Kanao's eyes widened, watching the warm, sacred light engulf her sister.
The pain in Kanae's body began to subside as the light seemed to heal her wounds. Similarly, a gentle glow appeared around Kanao.
The light gathered, and two "Eyes of God" materialized—golden-framed crystals with distinct patterns. The one with a butterfly pattern floated towards Kanao, while the one with a peony pattern went to Kanae.
Both sisters, in awe, reached out and held the Eyes of God in their hands.
[I recognize your good wishes. Take my blessings and live freely.]
A gentle voice echoed in their hearts, and both sisters burst into tears. It felt like a release of all the suffering they had endured since their parents were killed by demons.
"The gods have acknowledged us, sister. We were worthy all along," Kanao whispered, tears streaming down her face.
Kanae, holding her Eye of God, felt warmth spread through her body, healing her injuries completely. She felt her strength return, even stronger than before.
Kanao looked at the fleeing demon, her body coursing with newfound power. "We can't let him escape!"
"No, Kanao, he's too fast..." Kanae began, but before she could finish, a loud crash resounded.
A black figure flew back toward them, smashing into the ground, creating a crater.
Doma struggled to his feet, his robe torn to shreds, his face twisted in anger. He looked ahead with fear. "What now?! Even away from that mountain, the gods still notice!"
Two familiar figures emerged from the shadows.
"Kamisato Ayato and Kamisato Ayaka!" Kanae exclaimed.
"We sensed the battle here and came as soon as possible," Ayato said with a smile, his voice calm. He noticed the Eyes of God held by the two sisters and nodded in acknowledgment. "It seems the gods blessed you during the battle. Congratulations."
Ayaka drew her blade, the "Tenmu Shadow Sword," her face serious. "Brother, now is not the time for small talk."
"Of course, sister." Ayato turned back towards Doma, his own stance ready. "You two, you've just received the Eye of God. Watch closely; this is how you use it."
The Kamisato siblings rushed forward, their speed unmatched.
Doma's face twisted in fear. "You think you can kill me without a Nichirin Sword? No matter how strong you are, without that sword, you can't kill me!"
Ayaka's eyes shone with determination as the Eye of God at her waist began to glow. The air around her turned icy as her blade transformed into a weapon of pure frost.
"Kamiyashiro Style: Frost Destruction!"
