Chapter 49: Chapter 49: Wanted
After a series of adventures, meeting many companions, lifting his wanted status, and even sending that nobleman to the guillotine, Aether had become the honorary deputy leader of the Mondstadt branch of the Assassins. Now, for his second destination, he decided to head to Liyue.
The Assassins had a branch in Liyue as well, and gradually, Aether began to show potential as a rising underworld boss. Years later, he would indeed become the king of Teyvat's underground world.
After much effort, Rhinedottir finally developed the antidote—it wasn't easy. However, Yu only distributed it domestically and didn't bother with other regions, as taking the antidote once was enough to prevent further transformation into little blue children. Yu handed a few doses to Zhong Xiaochen for her to manage, and feeling she had stayed long enough, decided to return to Liyue.
Yu glanced at the group of accountants under his command, all busy calculating the losses they had suffered.
"Chief, I've tallied it up. Factoring in the chaos caused, the lost productivity, compensation for mental distress, and the damages from opportunists… let me double-check the digits."
"No need to report. Just hand it over."
Yu called Rhinedottir over.
"Here's the total loss caused during this time… roughly this much."
Rhinedottir stared at the trailing end of the bill that touched the floor and felt like crying again.
"Of course, I can't blame you entirely. After all, those unruly citizens share some responsibility."
A glimmer of hope appeared in Rhinedottir's eyes, but then Yu took out a pair of scissors and snipped off a tenth of the bill's length… and it still touched the floor. Her eyes once again filled with despair.
"Principal, even if you sold me, I couldn't pay this back!"
"Well, you are quite cute, so you might fetch a decent price, but it still wouldn't be enough."
"Prin… Principal." Rhinedottir cautiously spoke.
"What is it? Thought of a way to repay the debt?"
"Principal, you're a few hundred years old, right? And you said I'm pretty cute. How about… you marry me? I wouldn't mind."
"Scram! Not a single mora less on the debt. But don't worry, I'll use the authority of the gods to guarantee that nothing will happen to you until you've paid it off. And if anything unexpected does occur, your descendants will handle it."
"Principal, with my financial situation, who would want to marry me?"
"…"
"Principal, I think I have excellent genes. My children would definitely be elite. How about… you reconsider marrying me?"
Yu grabbed Rhinedottir by the scruff of her neck and tossed her into the sky pool.
"This girl… what's on her mind all day?"
Just then, Rhinedottir's voice echoed from the distance.
"Principal! Think it over again! If you agree, I'll be in your room tonight!"
"Scram!!"
Yu massaged his forehead, feeling a headache coming on. Maybe he should find a doctor for some brain surgery. He couldn't help but wonder—are all Khaenri'ah girls this forward?
Never mind. No use thinking about such troublesome matters. He hadn't been on a scholarly journey in a while, so why not take this chance to visit Liyue? He could also check in on his old buddies and see if they'd surfaced yet.
With that thought in mind, he quickly made a decision. First, he needed to fish Rhinedottir out—he had to bring her along this time. Who knew what kind of trouble she'd cause if left behind? He'd also bring Alice along. The two of them together could probably destroy the world.
"This time, our academic journey's goal is to study Geovishaps. How you conduct your research is up to you. Any questions?"
"Principal, can I keep one as a pet?" a student asked.
"If you can get it to obey you, then sure."
"Got it, Principal."
The student ran over to Rhinedottir, handed her a bag of Mora, and returned with a bottle of potion.

At Liyue Harbor
"This place is really lively," Aether marveled at the bustling scene before him. Compared to Mondstadt's stifling aristocratic atmosphere, Liyue was far more vibrant.
"Do you think the infection has spread here?" Dainsleif asked, eyeing the streets full of little blue children.
Just then, a patrol of Iron Masked Guards approached the two of them, walking straight over.
Aether and Dainsleif immediately tensed up, ready for a fight.
"Please don't be alarmed. We mean no harm. We are members of the Qianyan Army. Seeing as you two appear unaffected, would you be interested in serving as ceremonial guards for the upcoming Rite of Descension? The job comes with good pay, food, and lodging."
The two exchanged puzzled glances.
"It seems you're from out of town (which we already suspected). Here's the situation: the number of normal-looking people in the city can be counted on one hand, and it's only getting worse. Even the Qianyan Army hasn't been spared. Rumor has it that one of the Qixing is too embarrassed to show their face. But with the Rite of Descension coming up, the ceremony has to go on. And since Liyue takes face very seriously, we can't have blue-faced participants. So… would you two be interested?"
The pair exchanged glances again.
---
Soon, two new wanted posters were added to the bulletin board at Liyue Harbor.
Zhong Xiaochen stared at the two individuals before her, eyes gleaming with excitement. They were both incredibly handsome, but that shorter one—his waist! Oh, that waist! She was practically drooling.
"Why are you two being chased?"
"And why did you save us?" Aether asked.
"I saw you two stir up trouble for Rex Lapis. That made me happy, so I decided to help."
"You're from Liyue?"
"Of course."
"Then shouldn't you be turning us in?"
"Not every Liyuean is fond of Rex Lapis."
"So, what exactly did you two do?"
Aether and Dainsleif exchanged nervous glances. After a moment, Dainsleif stepped forward and explained:
"During the Rite of Descension, something went wrong, and no matter how hard they tried, they couldn't summon Rex Lapis. Things got chaotic. Since no one was in charge, we started chatting. At some point, I joked that maybe Rex Lapis turned blue and didn't want to show his face, which angered the crowd. Aether got into a scuffle with them, making the situation worse. Amid the commotion, an assassin took advantage of the chaos and killed an important figure. Seeing things go south, we tried to slip away but were mistaken for the assassins. And, well… here we are."
