Chapter 481: Chapter 481: The Spiral Abyss (2-in-1 Chapter) (Bonus)
Mondstadt City, Adventurers' Guild.
Nolan arrived with Noelle and Bennett.
Behind the counter stood Katheryne, dressed in her usual green-and-white outfit, handling commission logistics for adventurers as always.
She still had that same gentle demeanor.
They waited for the adventurer in front of them to finish and leave before stepping up.
"Well, if it isn't the famous legendary adventurer himself. What brings you back to my counter today?"
Katheryne teased with a playful smile.
"Miss Katheryne, please don't joke with me. No matter how great an adventurer becomes, they still need to come here to pick up commissions,"
Nolan replied, scratching his cheek a little awkwardly.
"Hehe, so what kind of commission are you looking to take on today?"
Katheryne asked with a soft chuckle.
"Uh, do you have anything related to the Treasure Hoarders? If not, an escort mission for a merchant caravan would work too."
Nolan paused to think before replying.
"Treasure Hoarders, huh? The Knights of Favonius have been cracking down on them pretty hard lately. It's been a while since we've had any commissions involving arresting or expelling them.
"As for merchant escorts, there are some, but they're mostly scheduled for tomorrow or the day after. Today's slots are either already departed or already taken by other adventuring parties,"
Katheryne explained with a small shake of her head.
"I see… well, can't be helped."
Nolan wasn't dead set on a specific mission—he just figured he might as well earn a bit of commission money while out and about.
If that wasn't possible, clearing out monsters would work too.
They could then head into the wild and see if they bumped into any Treasure Hoarders. With Bennett's notorious bad luck, there was a decent chance of running into trouble anyway.
Even if it wasn't Treasure Hoarders, gaining some Adventure EXP from monster hunting wouldn't be bad either.
As for the plan to gather and summarize the behavioral traits of evildoers to give Noelle a reference for identifying those who hide their true intentions—that didn't need to be rushed. There was still half a month left.
And besides, Treasure Hoarders didn't have to be the reference point. There were plenty of morally questionable people in town too.
He could just go invisible and tail them, observe what kind of "bad" they really were. No big deal.
Of course, if he could just give her a stat that let her see through malice, then he wouldn't need to go through all that trouble in the first place.
Nolan definitely preferred the latter—it was a one-and-done solution.
After all, no matter how much he taught her, Noelle wasn't going to become some all-seeing moral sage in just half a month.
Discernment and wisdom take time and experience to develop. They couldn't be rushed.
"Now that you're a legendary adventurer, shouldn't we leave the simple commissions to the rest of the guild?
"For someone like you, I actually have a high-level commission that's been sitting around for a while. Would you like to hear about it?"
Katheryne smiled warmly, both hands folded in front of her waist.
"A high-level commission?"
Nolan raised an eyebrow in mild surprise. A job worthy of being called "high-level"… Could it be a Legendary Commission?
"Hehe, it's not anything too dangerous, especially with Lord Barbatos' blessing watching over us."
Katheryne giggled softly before explaining:
"It's about some adventurers who were planning to set sail to Musk Reef and challenge the Spiral Abyss.
"But they suddenly encountered a powerful Eye of the Storm-like entity near the reef. It seems to have been corrupted—completely berserk—and it's preventing anyone from approaching the Spiral Abyss.
"While there aren't many adventurers capable of handling the Spiral Abyss, there are still some.
"We can't let something like a corrupted wind core scare them off or ruin their excitement.
"Also, we need to investigate why the Anemo core has gone berserk in the first place. If it's a serious issue that we overlook, things could turn bad quickly~
"You're probably the only one capable of handling this commission, Nolan. So, what do you say?
"The reward is quite generous!"
Musk Reef…?
Wasn't that, in the game, the location of one of the player's best sources of Primogems—the entrance to the Spiral Abyss Domain?
Nolan looked slightly surprised.
In the game, a lot of elements had in-world logic—they weren't just tacked on for gameplay. Things like "teleport waypoints" and "treasure chests" had lore-friendly explanations.
If Musk Reef really housed the Spiral Abyss, and if it worked like in the game with tons of monsters to fight, then this place was definitely worth checking out!
"Musk Reef! The old guys used to say the Spiral Abyss was an underground ruin built by some ancient lost civilization.
"It's filled with treasure! But of course, because of that, it's also crawling with Treasure Hoarders, Fatui, and tons of monsters!"
Bennett exclaimed excitedly.
He'd wanted to go there for a long time, but always felt he wasn't strong enough. Too risky. So he held back.
But with Nolan coming along, he had the confidence to give the Spiral Abyss a real shot!
"So that's the story. I've heard a bit about that place too. What do you think, Noelle? Want to go take a look?"
Nolan turned to ask the girl beside him.
"Mhm. If it's like what Bennett says, and there are lots of adventurers exploring the place, then it could be a great learning experience. I think it's worth going."
Noelle recalled what she'd read in books—places filled with treasure always involved intrigue and mind games. Seeing it with her own eyes might really teach her something.
And with Mr. Adventurer around, there was no way anything bad could happen!
"Since no one has any objections, let's take the commission. We'll deal with the berserk wind core and check out the Spiral Abyss while we're at it!"
Nolan made the call with conviction.
"In that case, I'll record it for you now."
Katheryne turned to retrieve the commission slip and handed it to Nolan. "All set!"
"Thanks for the help. We'll be heading out right away!"
Nolan accepted the commission politely and gave it a quick glance to review the contents.
The client turned out to be the Adventurers' Guild, and the commission reward was a full ten million Mora—definitely a high-tier mission by adventurer standards.
That likely meant the Eye of the Storm wasn't going to be weak.
After taking on the commission, Nolan, Noelle, and Bennett prepared to head toward Musk Reef.
As they exited the city gates and walked across the bridge, Noelle looked out over the glassy surface of Cider Lake. After thinking for a moment, she asked:
"Musk Reef is out at sea—are we going to rent a boat?"
Mondstadt was quite a distance from Musk Reef. Even setting off from Windrise Beach, it would still take at least a day or two to get there.
"Wait, wouldn't renting a boat for one or two days cost a ton of Mora?" Bennett didn't even need to think to know that wouldn't be cheap.
Nolan shook his head. "No need to go through all that trouble. We'll fly there."
As he spoke, he gathered Anemo energy around them. A breeze of emerald wind began to swirl. The next moment, he spread his Wind Glider wings, and the green whirlwind lifted him into the sky.
"Using Anemo to assist with flight, huh? That really saves a lot of Mora on boat rentals—so convenient!"
Bennett was fully onboard with the plan. He quickly spread his own Wind Glider wings and, with the help of the wind, effortlessly took to the air.
Soon after, Noelle did the same. Guided by the wind, she slowly rose into the sky, her skirt fluttering gently, armored boots swinging lightly as she hovered.
Seeing everyone ready, Nolan skillfully manipulated the Anemo currents, pushing the group into high-speed flight.
Within seconds, they vanished from their starting point, entering Windrise's territory. The grassy plains below rushed past like a river of green.
Before long, they flew out of Windrise and reached the borders of Windrise Beach. In the distance, the blue expanse of the ocean came into view.
"Wow! This is the fastest I've ever flown!" Bennett exclaimed in amazement.
If he had this kind of speed all the time, he could probably take on a commission in the morning and still be back in time to cook lunch for the old guys.
"No need to be jealous—you'll have access to this kind of speed soon."
Nolan chuckled as he used Anemo energy to block the intense air pressure from their rapid flight.
He was referring to Liyue's ongoing development of elemental steam-powered vehicles. The tech was nearly ready, and once mass-produced, it'd only be a matter of time before it hit Mondstadt.
As long as they reached speeds of 100 km/h, it'd be more than enough for all kinds of everyday use.
"Really?"
Bennett hadn't even finished his sentence when a white bird-like monster came diving straight at them. His bad luck had clearly kicked in again.
"Danger!"
Noelle also noticed the incoming white avian beast. With a cry of alarm, she instinctively activated her Breastplate.
She wasn't strong enough yet to use it on others, though.
So she quickly drew her Favonius Greatsword and moved in front of Nolan and Bennett, ready to take the impact from the creature head-on.
Nolan quickly checked the monster's level—around level 50, stronger than both Bennett and Noelle.
If she tried to take the hit directly, she might get hurt.
With that in mind, Nolan didn't hesitate.
Still mid-flight, he didn't even move—just released an invisible wave of mental force.
The bird-like monster suddenly jerked midair, dazed. Its vision went blank, and the fierce glint in its hawk-like eyes rolled white.
Its wings stopped flapping, and it plummeted toward the forest below like a crashed aircraft.
Nolan then manipulated the wind to bring everyone to a slow stop, cleanly avoiding the falling bird's path.
At that moment, a system prompt appeared on Nolan's quest panel:
[Defeated A Powerful Enemy. Obtained 952 Adventure EXP.]
"Phew… thank you, Mr. Adventurer."
Seeing the monster drop like a stone, Noelle realized it had been Nolan who acted.
She let out a small breath, shoulders relaxing. Her golden-trimmed shoulder plates clinked softly against her exposed white chestplate, the sound crisp and metallic.
[Noelle Has Developed Good Feelings Towards You, Obtained 230 Affection Points. Current Affection Level: Lv.6 (580/600)]
"No need to thank me—we're a team, after all,"
Nolan replied with a smile.
"Man, that gave me a scare! Why would a white monster bird suddenly show up here? Don't tell me it's because of me again…"
Bennett scratched the back of his head awkwardly.
"Don't worry. As long as I'm around, even if your bad luck drags over an ancient archon, I'll make sure he loses two teeth before getting sent packing."
Nolan reassured him.
"Yeah."
Bennett nodded earnestly. His self-blame eased a little—after all, he knew that if anyone could do that, it was Nolan.
"Mr. Adventurer, Bennett—look down there. That white monster bird... doesn't it seem a little strange?"
Noelle looked below, eyes fixed on where the bird had fallen.
Nolan and Bennett followed Noelle's gaze and saw that the white avian monster had crashed into a tree as thick as a pair of legs put together.
Its body was caught tightly among the branches, and perhaps because it was still dizzy, it didn't move at all—no sign of struggle.
But something strange was happening—its back began to ripple, almost like waves, and slowly bulged outward.
"…That's pretty creepy. What's going on?"
Nolan frowned and summoned a semi-transparent thread, intending to extend it toward the bird's back.
Just then, the bird's back suddenly burst open, and sheets of white paper scattered into the air like snowflakes.
Looking more closely, they noticed a man in white had somehow appeared, standing atop the creature's back.
"What the—?! There's a person on the bird's back?!" Bennett exclaimed in shock.
"Maybe he was hiding there using some special method…"
Hovering in midair, Noelle pinched her chin thoughtfully, speculating based on what she'd just seen.
"Maybe. But whatever the case, he's clearly hostile now."
Nolan shrugged, a bit helpless.
Bennett's bad luck sure came through again—here comes the second guy delivering free EXP.
"Bastards! Who the hell are you, and why did you attack me?!"
The man in white shouted at them furiously.
He'd just barely escaped an ambush by those damned Knights of Favonius, and now his pet had suddenly collapsed out of nowhere.
Damn it, it had to be these guys' doing!
Though seething with rage, the man in white held himself back from launching a counterattack right away.
Because the Knights of Favonius—and that wretched woman—were right on his tail!
He glanced at his unconscious white avian beast. It was no longer capable of carrying him away. Damn it! The more he thought about it, the angrier he got.
He was doing fine escaping, so how the hell did this group of busybodies just randomly show up?!
…Deep breath. Calm down. This isn't the time to cause more trouble. First, I need to run and hide.
The man in white barely managed to rein in his emotions.
He activated his Vision and began channeling Hydro energy, preparing to leap to the ground and dive into hiding.
But at that moment, a cold, emotionless voice rang out:
"Rites of Termination!"
A massive ice cross-spear, completely formed from Cryo energy, descended from the sky. The extreme cold instantly locked onto the man in white.
He had no chance to escape.
In the end, it was his own fault for not fleeing the moment he emerged from the creature's back. Instead, he wasted precious seconds shouting in anger at Nolan's group.
And now he was paying the price for it.
BOOM!
The ice spear struck the man in white, freezing not just him, but also every tree within several dozen meters into solid ice.
"…What the…"
Nolan felt a familiar presence emanating from the frozen battlefield.
He didn't have long to wonder.
A figure dressed in a nun's outfit suddenly appeared, standing effortlessly on the crown of a frozen tree nearby.
Her toes lightly pressed against an outstretched branch.
